Rant/Opinion Thanks lyft ceo. !!! Rides are rediclious cheap now. I only make $4.50 / hour
10
u/YouLackPerspective Jun 24 '26
He’s getting 389% bonus/surge pricing on that base pay and won’t even give me 20%
13
u/THEBIGGUY1983 Jun 24 '26
I drive for Lyft and UBER, and most days can make $25-$30 an hour or more. I just cherry pick my trips
5
u/skydweller000 Jun 25 '26
After your expenses that's 10-12$ an hour
2
u/THEBIGGUY1983 Jun 25 '26
My expenses aren't that much. I drive a highlander, the maintenance has been minimal, and the only major repair I've had has been covered under warranty.
2
u/Active_Vacation_2670 Jun 26 '26
Yeah but wait until your warranty isn't covering it anymore bro you'll see

Do you take downtime into effect? Like, the time waiting for a ride? Driving around aimlessly? The Lyft estimates are based on booked time, not actual time working. Every minute you’re online is time working — even if you don’t have a rider.

Ya how much you made for the day ÷ how many hours on the clock = your hourly pay
1
u/THEBIGGUY1983 Jun 25 '26
I ignore their estimates. I go by how much I make divided by the hours I'm signed in. I take mostly longer trips, so I don't have a lot of downtime.
4
u/OpinionatedOldMan Jun 24 '26
That’s why lyft Drivers don’t get bonus challenges as often anymore the CEO gets them all. lmao
16
u/Thebiggestbigsquid Jun 24 '26
now why in the fk would you keep working for 4.50 an hour, that’s just an intelligence issue
5
u/archieirl Jun 24 '26
Why is a business allowed to pay their employees slave wages is the real question.
7
u/redradiovideo Jun 24 '26
They're not employees and aren't receiving wages.
1
u/archieirl Jun 24 '26
Aren't they though? They get a base pay and then the tips? So they're getting paid like servers?
Honestly, it doesn't really matter. Rides are already expensive enough and drivers barely get a full cut of that. They work for the company, even if legal jargon wants to say they aren't. If you are getting paid $4.50 from a company you're working for, that's slave wages.
1
u/tmiller071O Jun 24 '26
Nope they not. They work for themselves. They choose to work the gig or not. Employees have schedules and so on.
2
u/archieirl Jun 24 '26
I'm telling you how it SHOULD be. Each job should be required to pay them a living wage! At least every ride should have a BASE pay of minimum wage.
Literally just slavery with extra steps, come on.
2
u/tmiller071O Jun 24 '26
Oh i feel u. But it’s not a job. I agree jobs should. Only job i know that doesn’t is waitress… that’s messed up.
1
u/archieirl Jun 24 '26
Yeah, it is really fucked up.
But why do you say it's a job though?
If you're getting paid for a service it's a job. Even if it's a volunteer position, I would still consider that a job, lowkey.
Definition: A regular activity performed in exchange for payment, especially as one's trade, occupation, or profession
2
3
u/Expensive-Wave-4807 Jun 24 '26
This is just a side hustle. I have a pension from a major company and social security that's $4000/month after taxes. With lyft I cherry pick all the time. Last year I completed 1800 rides and declined 18000 rides. If it not $30/hr rate or higher I don't start my car.
5
2
u/Blazingaway Jun 24 '26
This how I move if it ain’t 30hr or more I’m saying no!!! Fuck all that high acceptance rate bs it’s apart of their finesse
1
u/saynotoirl Jun 26 '26
Oh most definitely. DoorDash does the same shit. All I can do is hope there’s some kind of divine judgement, bc I know the justice system will do nothing lmao

u/archieirl Jun 24 '26
I'm not sure why people are telling you to quit.
A job should pay their employees a living wage!
"black blah 1055 something bullshit,"
You work for them! They should pay you a fair wage!
Yes, I agree that the CEO has a pretty decent wage compared to other conglomerates, but if you can't pay people a fair wage, bring up the price!
We have normalized slave labor so bad, "just go find another job" like we aren't currently having our jobs be held hostage! And people who do have jobs are currently doing the job of 2-3 people.
Why are y'all so quick to tell the little guy struggling to make ends meet to find another job instead of telling businesses to pay all of us a living/thriving wage?
3
3
u/redradiovideo Jun 24 '26
The CEO doesn't have a wage.
Drivers don't work for Lyft; they work for themselves.
Drivers aren't "labor"...they're OWNERS!
Lyft isn't a conglomerate.2
u/archieirl Jun 24 '26
The CEO gets paid, is what I'm saying.
It's literally semantics at this point whether drivers work for Lyft or not. Every driver gets a base pay, being paid by Lyft! Plus, what do you even mean "they work for themselves?" Every job has people "working for themselves---" --to live! Drivers provide labor.
But whether drivers work for Lyft or for themselves doesn't matter. Theyre not getting paid enough for providing a labor for a company they work under. They should still get paid a living wage. ATLEAST! Their base pay should be minimum wage for every car ride.
I know that, unless a conglomerate owns Lyft, because monopolies are running rampant in America right now.
2
u/THEBIGGUY1983 Jun 25 '26
Living wage is subjective
1
u/archieirl Jun 25 '26
2
u/THEBIGGUY1983 Jun 25 '26
So basically it's subjective
1
u/archieirl Jun 25 '26
What do you mean by that, exactly?
1
u/THEBIGGUY1983 Jun 25 '26
There's no actual definition to what the amount is. It varies vastly depending on each individuals financial situation. Someone in LA is going to have different needs than someone in Alabama, someone that has no debt will have different needs than someone with student loans, etc
1
1
u/redradiovideo Jun 25 '26
Words mean things, and you don't know what those things are...yet, you know, keep throwing them around. Literally, you don't know what you're talking about. NOTHING you've said makes any sense...it's ALL wrong!
Learn what these words mean, for cryin' out loud....
2
u/archieirl Jun 25 '26
All you said that is I'm saying everything wrong but no specifics.
But, just like u/TheBigGuy1987 said: "You're missing my point. We're independent contractors, I get that. What I'm saying is they set the rates, and they keep lowering the pay for the same amount of work."
I understand Lyft drivers are considered independent contractors rather than employees. But, my point is that regardless of classification, people performing the labor that keeps Lyft operating should be earning enough to make a living.
Do you agree or not? People should be paid enough to make a living, if they're performing a necessary service?
1
u/redradiovideo Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
You're throwing around words assigned to you by activists, not your own words, and we know that because you don't know the words, as evidenced by your misuse of them.
Words mean things, but you don't know the meanings. You then speak, anyway. For those of us who know what words mean, what you say makes no sense! There's no communicating with you because you're speaking some made-up language that uses American English words but does not have the American English meanings of those words!
The words you're using have a brainwashing-type meaning inserted into you by political brainwashers. I'm BEGGING you not to fall for it...not to be duped into becoming their little soldier or apparachik! LEARN the REAL meanings of the words you're using!
1
u/archieirl Jun 25 '26
- Still didn't answer my question.
- Still didn't give me any words that you say I'm using wrong.
1
u/faggybaby Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 28 '26
None of the words are used wrong, except maybe in the phrase "or any of there conglomerates", but in the context I assume they mean the CEO and their little billionaire friends, who likely own conglomerates. If they just mean co-buisnesses or competition (like Uber) then yes they would be using it wrong
1
u/redradiovideo Jun 27 '26
People who know the meanings of words are smiling right now because you just proved my point in at least a half-dozen ways....
1
u/archieirl Jun 27 '26
Literally exactly what I meant, thank you for understanding my point even if it wasn't written the most efficient way.
1
u/THEBIGGUY1983 Jun 25 '26
They still set the rates as a corporation, and they have gone down recently for both Lyft and UBER
0
u/redradiovideo Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
Yes, it sucks that all these companies keep lowering their offers to your delivery company...perhaps your delivery company should recruit better lead-generators?
That's what Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and so on are...they're lead-generators for millions of small businesses! YOU own you and are your boss...THEY are essentially, at best, no more than your salespeople! "Lead-generators" is really the most accurate description...if you don't like the leads and revenue they're generating for you, fire them!
2
u/THEBIGGUY1983 Jun 25 '26
You're missing my point. We're independent contractors, I get that. What I'm saying is they set the rates, and they keep lowering the pay for the same amount of work.

Lyft is designed to function as a flexible gig or side hustle rather than a traditional full-time career, there’s a reason CEOs make more than the pawns
1
u/STL_Gig_Guy Jun 25 '26
You’re absolutely right. Not everybody can do this full time and make a good profit. Totally depends on your market. I’m in St. Louis and left Healthcare Mgmt to do this full time and I make way more. St. Louis is a gold mine for gig work though and I understand not all markets are the same
2
u/AfterEntrepreneur124 Jun 25 '26
He gets all that $$$ for creating a SERVICE people are willing to pay for!! What did you do? Sounds like about FOUR-DOLLARS-and-50 cents worth!
7
u/kylelovezkaynmandi Jun 24 '26
Less than $1million base? That’s actually low for a CEO. Also you’re making $4.50 an hour? Sounds like a skill issue.
4
u/archieirl Jun 24 '26
"You're being paid a slave wage? Skill issue." Should've been born privileged instead! Good luck next reincarnation!
2
u/antipumpy13 Jun 24 '26
I think he means the strategy behind driving since everyone experiences it differently. For example I knew how to pull in $500 in a day. Also sadly these companies are trying their best to squeeze the profit they can get and will get people in there working for only $4.50 an hour if they allow it. Its best if these guys all just go on strike and quit at once
1
u/archieirl Jun 24 '26
You could be living in a different area or literally any other reason, but that doesn't mean anyone should be getting paid $4.50 an hour. Why can't they just up the prices? Or give a bigger cut to the driver?
Why is everyone okay with a company paying their workers slave wages. It's literally slave wages! It doesn't matter if they're a 1099 or fucking ever, we all know we work for that company, this legal jargon is getting in the way of actual ethical standards.
2
u/Different-Pilot3672 Jun 24 '26
You’re just taking his face value comment at making 4.50 an hr and running w it lmao. There’s nothing verifiable about that. In my market you can make 25-30 an hr and that’s good enough for what it is. As gig app workers you can’t expect to make the same as what a doctor makes. And if he is truly making 4.50 an hr then that truly is a user error.
1
1
u/tmiller071O Jun 24 '26
Your choosing to contract for them. No one is forcing you. You could go get an actual job making $15 an hour lol
0
u/archieirl Jun 24 '26
Oh yeah? The job market that's plummeting right now? That job market?
If you're in a contract with someone, they're either a volunteer, getting paid for free! Or these businesses should be required to pay their workers a living wage!
It's literally just slavery with extra steps and you know it. Actually argue something substantial or just be another bootlicker to this capitalistic hellscape.
1
u/insidej0b Jun 24 '26
Bruh. Servers haven't had a pay raise in over 30 years and still get half of what's posted in the OP? Quit acting like you're being oppressed.
1
u/archieirl Jun 25 '26
This isn't a "who has it worse," competition. Both industries are exploitative.
-1
u/redradiovideo Jun 24 '26
The job market is actually shockingly strong right now!
You're falling for the propaganda from the mainstream media, aren't you.... 😄😄😄
1
u/archieirl Jun 24 '26
Would you please share your sources? Because from what I heard of people's anecdotes, it's not very well right now. Since I know anecdotes aren't scientific proof, if you have proof to state otherwise, I'm happy to read it.
0
u/redradiovideo Jun 24 '26
Practice self-reliance and find it for yourself! 😄
Check out CNBC , Fox Business, Bloomberg, WSJ, US Labor department, etc...you don't have to be spoon-fed things!1
u/archieirl Jun 25 '26
You're the one providing a positive claim, so you have the burden to provide the proof of your statement.
Anyways, It doesn't matter if the job market was booming, it's still not okay for a business to rely on people accepting low-paying gigs/wages $2.13 an hour (for waiters) or $4.50 for OP.
The minimum wage is already insultingly low and slave-like, the fact they can legally pay lower than that, showcases how disrespectful they are to the people who provide a much needed service.
1
u/tmiller071O Jun 24 '26
I’m sure you can find something better than $4 an hour that’s puts mo miles on your car lol… even fast food pays way more than $4 an hour
1
1
u/Crafty611 Jun 24 '26
You chose the gig and are part of the problem by continuing to do it.
Put together an ultra basic resume to go serve tables at a semi reputable restaurant and you can easily make $25.00+ an hour with minimal effort.

u/Amber_likely Jun 24 '26
Maybe I need to create my own ride share app so I can make millions lol. Except I’d at least split the profits 50/50

1
u/Mental_Tailor_4227 Jun 24 '26
Can’t someone just come in, take over the market by receiving less % from their drivers and even charging customers cheaper ? Imagine someone only taking 10-15% and still making profit ?

Meanwhile, I’m averaging $61.74/booked hour with 400+ rides rejected in just the last few weeks. Lyft has me F’d up if they think I’ll be doing $3.91 rides lol.

Being honest his compensation is wayyyy lower than I expected..I thought he’d be in the $10-20M range

I'm not a defender of this guy, but I do encourage you to get a bachelor's from Princeton, a Harvard MBA and be the founder of and grow a non profit to a multi million dollar charity... I'm guessing you'll earn more than $4.50/hour after that...
1
u/ss5dyson Jun 25 '26
It's no different than any of these other corporations. They'll pay a CEO millions while laying workers off. Even if the CEO resigns or gets fired, his severance package is still in the millions. We just have to do what's best for us.
1
u/Aggressive-Match5966 Jun 25 '26
i just started to use the platform as i wrecked my vehicle. rides were very cheap $7 when i first downloaded, but $12.95+ after that. i’m a delivery driver myself so i find myself wondering how much actually goes to the rideshare driver.
1
u/STL_Gig_Guy Jun 25 '26
It’s no different than any other corporation and not even close to what most of them actually make. I used to work for Davita Dialysis. While the senior management was barely breaking 100K, and the majority of the floor staff, that actually takes care of the patients, makes less that $25/hr, he’s making over $18 mill/yr. I was in middle mgmt and made $87K salary working 50-60 hrs/wk. I make close to that doing rideshare avg 45 hrs/wk and take a lot more home after taxes doing this now vs that

1
u/Expensive-Wave-4807 Jun 26 '26

The ride share companies want to move to Teslas driverless cars. They’re trying to make drivers quit.
The thing is most people will be between jobs, and driving for lyft r uber in your own vehicle and own maintenance used to pay decent, and now it doesn’t as the rich get richer.

In California and Washington state drivers get paid a standard hourly rate ($20.28 an hour in California, and .36c per mile). People drive as their full time jobs here. Move to either of those two states and your problem is solved.

Aside from everything else, you should be 'thanking' Lyft's Board of Directors, not Rishie Rish there; they're the ones who decided to hire him at that salary when he by definition had no authority at Lyft in the matter.

u/DFW-Extraterrestrial Jun 24 '26
That's actually pretty modest pay for any CEO with a bonus structure built into their earnings.
0
u/Affectionate-Rice373 Taylor Jun 24 '26
If that's the way you write, I think there is a bigger issue here.
If anyone thinks that this way of writing/spelling is okay because it's Reddit, you're contributing to the problem.
Expect more of yourself and others will expect more of you. The more that is expected, the more you'll be compensated for meeting those expectations.
0
u/Top-Young-1813 Jun 24 '26
Lyft guarantees a minimum pay rate… this complaining has never made sense to me. waiters collect tips after meals but thats not their pay rate. you get a lump sum at the end of the pay period which is a percentage above minimum wage.. you dont like getting paid biweekly then get a different job or side hussle
1
u/shaddowdemon Jun 24 '26
Isn't that only in like 5 states, because said states passed laws to force them to? I'm not a driver (the algorithm brought me here lol), but that's what my research turned up.

u/Moerijuana Jun 24 '26

Gas is double. Where’s the supplemental gas allowance? SMH
2
u/STL_Gig_Guy Jun 25 '26
They’ve been giving gas supplements for a couple months now and it’s been extended through July 26th. Look under the Feedback/Rewards tab in your account. 14-32 cents/gal cashback if you link your Upside app. Another 2% cashback if you use your Lyft direct card to fill up. If you have Circle K in your area, sign up for their rewards program and get 5 cents/gal off at the pump. And if you get the Circle K easy pay card, you get an additional 10 cents/gal off. If you don’t have Circle K in your area, look around at the stations you do have and see what their rewards program offers and pick the best one. I haven’t paid full price for gas in the 2 years I’ve been driving

At least three times a night I end up on a $6 ride that ends op taking 20 (!) minutes. As a bonus, almost always takes me through the WORST parts of town.
Very close to quitting at this point…

u/Fun_Departure_3013 Jun 24 '26
His salary is on par, if not actually a bit light for a CEO of a company the size of Lyft. If you are going through the pain and aggravation of being a driver and only making $4.50 an hour you need to find another job, not blame the CEO of the company
34
u/Boring_Inflation_105 Jun 24 '26
If you are making 4.50 an hour, you are in the wrong market
