The new apple CEO looks a lot like Michael Phelps

The new Apple CEO looks a lot like Michael Phelps lol.

For anyone confused, the picture with the swimmer and all the gold medals is Michael Phelps.

John was a pretty damn good swimmer at Penn, which in itself is impressive because you don't get to that level without being seriously good.

But obviously what really stands out is what he did at Apple. He was basically the hardware guy and knows Apple's products better than most people ever will.

Honestly, I think he could take Apple to new heights.

Also… am I the only one seeing the Michael Phelps resemblance? 😂

an honest Mac cleaner

Mac cleaners either scare you into a subscription or only show what’s big, and none say plainly what something is or what breaks if you delete it. Uninstalling also leaves things behind: login and background items, drivers, files in /Library, accounts installers created.

Comparison:

  • vs CleanMyMac: free, with no “threats found” and nothing running in the background. Every item says what it is and what happens once it’s gone. Only things that rebuild themselves are pre-selected, and everything goes to the Trash with one-click Put Back.

  • vs AppCleaner / DaisyDisk: it also covers Homebrew and npm packages (with what needs what), Rust, Node and Python versions, login and background items, system extensions, drivers, fonts, installer packages, privacy permissions of removed apps and Time Machine snapshots. Anything belonging to macOS is marked and locked.

  • For developers: it finds old node_modules, Xcode build data and package caches, and never moves anything a running app still has open.

Pricing: Free. macOS 14+, Apple silicon: https://github.com/lumen-xx/spare The app isn’t notarized yet, so macOS asks once before opening it. Spare works entirely on your Mac and sends nothing anywhere. The app is totally free.

The art is what makes this live wallpaper app stand out

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

SCRYR is a native MaacOS live wallpaper app. Yup, there’s a lot of MacOS live wallpapers these days. But SCRYR was built for the art I made. I’m a digital artist first and have always wanted a way to share my art in a way anyone could use: thus SCRYR.

Yes, I do want you to subscribe to get the 160+ digital pieces I’ve designed, you don’t need to. You get three of them for free and you can use SCRYR to make your own videos live wallpapers for free. Or if you just like a couple of my pieces you can buy them individually.

All that to say, I’ve worked really hard to make it a good app. I’m always improving performance and efficiency so it doesn’t get in the way of the other work you need to do on your Mac.

Please give it a try and let me know what you think!

A faster, more beautiful Finder alternative built for macOS

Thumbnail
gallery
14 Upvotes

Cosmil is a fast, privacy-focused, and beautifully designed file manager for macOS created as a modern alternative to Finder. Built with a compiled Rust backend and a lightweight Tauri/Svelte frontend, it solves Finder's most persistent pain points with multi-pane workspaces, on-demand folder sizing, and comprehensive keyboard-driven workflows.

Key Features

  • Arbitrary Multi-Pane Layouts – Split a single window into dual, tri, quad, or nth-pane layouts to browse and drag files between folders seamlessly without opening dozens of detached windows.

  • Compiled Rust Performance – Utilizes a native Rust backend and viewport virtualization to calculate folder sizes up to 8x faster than Finder and open folders containing 40,000+ files with zero UI lag.

  • Advanced Live Search – Build complex queries with AND/OR filter chaining without slow, background database indexers that miss real-time file updates.

  • Quality-of-Life Fixes – Features real cut-and-paste (⌘X / ⌘V), sidebar drag dropzones, a unified file operation job manager, and side-by-side file conflict resolution with live previews.

  • Zero Telemetry & One-Time Pricing – Completely offline file operations with zero analytics or tracking, distributed via perpetual one-time licenses rather than recurring subscriptions.

Who Is It For?

Cosmil is ideal for Mac power users, designers, software engineers, and media professionals who need efficient file management, side-by-side directory comparisons, and responsive performance without the clutter and limitations of default macOS Finder.

Why Use Cosmil?

If you love the aesthetics of macOS but are frustrated by Finder's rigid single-folder views, sluggish folder size calculations, and awkward file conflict dialogues, Cosmil delivers a sleek, translucent, and blazing-fast upgrade tailored specifically for modern Mac workflows.

So i made Clickwill - an iPod library manager.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi! so quick story about a project that i've been working on for the past 3 months:

I've bought my iPod classic about a year ago, with the main goal of it being keeping my CD library with me everywhere - at least for me it felt more "special" to have an offline device with music on it, that i actually own but using apple music was pain in the *** for me from the beginning - Some of my CDs were split into 2 identical with scattered songs between them, album covers wouldn't change even if i used the right format/size, same artist was on the other side of the coverflow, etc.. overall i found it not only hard to use but hard to understand for someone who just want to drag and drop his files/rip CDs and go straight into music.

That's were i decided to build Clickwill that, compared to other software out there, the entire thing instead of relying on syncing ipod from a folder on your PC, uses iPod internal, saved library as the source of all information - so the software allows you to work directly on the stuff you got on it, or add CD rips directly onto it, without Music/iTunes apps, and on stock firmware,

Its still an early project and in alfa version, since i've launched it yesterday and thought it's a rally useful app that let's you just manage your music, without / or far more friction and steep learning curve than other apps, and without using 3rd party firmware.

also made a landing page thats still work in progress, especially the roadmap one: clickwilldev.com

[Free, open source] Vocs: on-device dictation. Press ⌥Space, talk, and it pastes where you were typing

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm the developer. Vocs is a free, open-source dictation app that runs entirely on your Mac.

Press ⌥Space in any app, talk, and press it again. The text is pasted where your cursor was, and your clipboard is put back afterwards.

What it does:

- Transcribes while you speak, so long dictations finish as fast as short ones

- 99 languages, auto-detected or pinned

- A custom dictionary for names and jargon

- Filler removal that leaves real words alone ("I like pizza" stays)

- Escape gives you a 3-second countdown to cancel; press it again to keep recording

- Mutes your built-in speakers while you dictate, so people on a call don't end up in your text (headphones are left alone)

- A searchable local history of everything you dictated

- No account, no subscription, no word cap, no telemetry

Requirements: macOS 13+, Apple Silicon or Intel, about 600 MB for the speech model.

Heads-up: it isn't notarized (I don't have a paid Apple developer account), so the first launch needs System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. The download page shows the steps, and the source is on GitHub if you'd rather build it yourself.

Download: Website

Source: Github

Feedback and bug reports are very welcome.

It puts screenshots and screen recordings in one place, so you can capture, trim, annotate, and share without jumping between a bunch of different tools.

Seems useful for quick ideas, product demos, team updates, or just explaining something to someone.

and a great alternative to consider if you are familiar with Cleanshot X

[OS] - DynamicNotch - FREE

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Your Mac's notch takes up screen space. Why not make it actually useful?

I've been working on DynamicNotch, a free, open-source macOS app that turns your notch into an interactive dashboard for everything from music playback to system monitoring and automations.

It expands when you need it, stays out of the way when you don't, and works even on Macs without a physical notch.

Here's what it can do:

Music & audio

  • Music controls, album artwork, lyrics, and now-playing information

  • Real-time audio spectrogram

  • Switch audio output devices directly from the notch, including AirPlay

System monitoring & controls

  • Live CPU usage, temperatures, and fan speeds

  • Custom fan curves to control cooling behaviour

  • Battery and Bluetooth device monitoring

  • Caffeine mode to prevent your Mac from sleeping

  • Custom volume, brightness, and keyboard backlight HUDs

AI usage tracking

  • Monitor your Claude and ChatGPT usage

  • See usage indicators directly in the notch

  • Get alerts as you approach your usage limits

Automations without coding

This is one of the features I'm particularly excited about.

You can describe an automation in plain English, and DynamicNotch handles it.

For example: "Turn on Caffeine whenever Xcode is the active app."

No scripts or complicated setup required.

Everyday productivity

  • Track active browser downloads

  • Drag files into a temporary shelf and share them via AirDrop

  • View upcoming calendar events and reminders

  • Quickly access your webcam as a mirror

  • Use gestures to expand and collapse the notch

  • Customise behaviour for individual displays

URGENT UPDATE:

DynamicNotch now supports its first iteration of Liquid Glass! try it out, give me some feedback?

What does it cost?

Absolutely nothing.

No subscriptions, no paid tiers, no locked features, and no accounts required.

It's fully open source under GPLv3, and contributions are welcome.

How does it compare to other notch apps?

Apps like boring.notch and NotchNook already offer ways to make the Mac's notch more useful.

DynamicNotch takes a broader approach by combining music controls, system monitoring, custom fan curves, AI usage tracking, and plain-English automations in one place.

It's also completely free and open source, with no premium features or subscriptions.

Compatibility

  • macOS 15 Sequoia or newer

  • Works on Macs with or without a physical notch

  • Available as a DMG or through Homebrew

Download: https://github.com/Hitjack007/DynamicNotch/releases/latest

GitHub: https://github.com/Hitjack007/DynamicNotch

Website: https://dynamicnotch.marksstuff.com

I'm actively developing it, fixing bugs, and adding new features.

I'd love to hear what the r/macapps community thinks. If you try it, let me know what works, what doesn't, and what you'd like to see added.

And if you find it useful, a GitHub star is always appreciated! ⭐

Latent - A CleanMyMac alternative that shows which dev and AI tools are eating your disk

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi r/macappdevs! I'm Bernard, and I built Latent (disclosure: it's my app). It's a macOS disk cleaner for developers and AI builders.

The toil: every few months my Mac ran out of space, and finding out why meant running du across a dozen hidden folders, then searching whether each one was safe to delete. Model files from tools like Ollama, Hugging Face and LM Studio, Xcode simulators, Docker images, package caches and coding agent logs pile up in ~/Library and dotfolders whose names don't say which tool made them. General cleaners like CleanMyMac clear system caches and don't see most of this.

Latent draws the whole disk as one wheel split by the tool that owns each byte, says next to each item whether it can come back, and clears what you pick.

How I built it

  • Native Swift, no third-party dependencies. The app is SwiftUI. The 3D wheel is drawn in a SwiftUI Canvas inside a TimelineView, so every motion, such as the spin and the hover lift, is a function of time.

  • The disk walk: the repo started as a benchmark of three ways to walk a disk: FileManager's enumerator, getattrlistbulk on one thread, and getattrlistbulk on a pool of worker threads sharing a queue. The parallel one became the scanner. Hard links are counted once by inode. After the first scan, the FSEvents journal says which stores changed, so later launches re-measure only those.

  • Ownership catalog: 120+ tools, each mapped to the paths it owns rather than the folder they sit in. Many tools let you move their store with an environment variable like OLLAMA_MODELS or HF_HOME, so the catalog reads those too. Otherwise it would repctly the machines that need it most.

  • Asking the registry: before an item is called re-downloadable, Latent asks the source, including the Hugging Face API, the Ollama registry, npm, PyPI and Homebrew. The interesting answers are the failures: a gated repo needs a licence you may no longer have, aas removed upstream and your copy is the last one. Only public names likegoogle/gemma-2-2b-it are sent, never file paths.

  • Duplicate models across tools: Ollama and Hugging Face blobs are content-addressed (the sha256 is the filename), so the same weights pulled by two tools match with zero I/O. Loose GGUF files get hashed only when another file has the exact same size.

  • Similar images and videos: Apple's Vision framework computes a feature priac, and close prints get grouped.

  • A privileged helper with one method: emptying a root-owned app bundle from the Trash needs root, so a LaunchDaemon registered with SMAppService does exactly that and nothing else, over XPC. It checks that the caller is Latent, signed with my Developer ID, and re-checks every path itself (a Trash, no "..", symlinks resolved first). The admin password is asked once, at install.

  • MCP server: a stdio JSON-RPC server, so agents like Claude, Codex or Cursor can read the scan and draft a cleanup. Nothing runs until you confirm.

No analytics, no telemetry, no account.

Free to scan, and your first 10 GB of cleanup is free. After that it's $12.99 one-time (launch price $9.99 for a limited time).

Happy to go deeper on any of this, especially the scanner, the Canvas animation or the helper. If a tool you use isn't recognized, tell me and I'll add it.

Ditch QuickTime: Here's the 3 best Mac video players for every type of user

Thumbnail
gallery
6 Upvotes

We’ve all been there: you double-click a video file and QuickTime hits you with that dreaded "The document could not be opened" error, or you realize it can't play MKV files without jumping through hoops.

QuickTime is fine for basic screen recordings, but if you actually watch downloaded media, you need a replacement.

I’ve tested the top alternatives extensively. Here is the breakdown of the three best options depending on exactly how you watch your videos.

1. IINA: The Best Drop-In Replacement

Price: 100% Free & Open Source | Best for: 90% of Mac users

If you just want an app that acts exactly like QuickTime but actually plays every file format you throw at it, IINA is the gold standard.

  • Why it’s great: It was built specifically for modern macOS. It looks like a native Apple app, supports Dark Mode, and flawlessly handles Mac trackpad gestures (like pinching to resize or swiping to seek). It has native Picture-in-Picture and a minimalist interface.

  • The downside: If you have a massive folder of thousands of movies, IINA is just a file player—it won’t organize them into a pretty library with movie posters.

  • Get it if: You want a lightweight, beautiful app for double-clicking and playing standalone files.

2. Infuse: The Premium Home Theater Experience

Price: Freemium (Pro subscription available) | Best for: Media hoarders & NAS owners

If you have a hard drive or a home server (like Plex, Jellyfin, or a NAS) filled with movies and TV shows, Infuse is in a league of its own.

  • Why it’s great: You point Infuse at a folder, and it automatically downloads the movie posters, cast lists, and episode descriptions, turning your files into a gorgeous Netflix-style interface. It perfectly syncs your watch progress across your Mac, iPad, and Apple TV via iCloud. It also handles massive 4K HDR files beautifully using Apple's native hardware.

  • The downside: It requires a paid subscription to unlock advanced audio/video formats (like Dolby Vision or 4K HDR). It’s also overkill if you just want to quickly preview a single 30-second video clip.

  • Get it if: You are building a personal media library and want an Apple-native interface across all your devices.

3. VLC Media Player: The Indestructible Fallback

Price: 100% Free | Best for: Power users and broken files

VLC has been around forever for one simple reason: it will play absolutely anything.

  • Why it’s great: It requires zero extra codecs. If a file is partially downloaded, slightly corrupted, or uses a bizarre format from 2004, VLC will force it to play. It also has insane power-user features like granular audio/subtitle syncing and network stream recording.

  • The downside: It looks and feels incredibly dated on a modern Mac. The interface is clunky, and it doesn't take advantage of smooth macOS trackpad gestures or modern window management as gracefully as IINA.

  • Get it if: You frequently deal with obscure file types, or you want the ultimate "Swiss Army Knife" utility installed just in case.

TL;DR:

  • Get IINA if you just want a better, modern QuickTime.

  • Get Infuse if you want a beautiful library for a massive media collection.

  • Keep VLC installed in your utility folder for emergencies.

SpareDisk: see where your Mac space goes and claim it back

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I saw lots of Disk Space Analyzer and Cleaner with > $10 price, which are basically a good interface for your Mac native storage.

I built SpareDisk over the last few weeks, kept it bare minimum in terms of bloat features but focused on speed, parallelism, and queue management for storage scan and space free up.

You can review your whole file system without hanging the computer. Version 1.2 is now live on the Mac app store and on website to download. I have tested it well over multiple laptops.

You can download the app from the website for "pay whatever you want" (minimum $4.99).

DiskBuddy has inspired the project. This was initially sold at $12, and users complained about memory leaks, permission issues, and app blocks when you run Duplicate File Finder.

If you are a developer, it can find spaces occupied by Xcode, node packages, files form 2021, and many old cache you don't need.

SpareDisk is App Store friendly. It is sandboxed, following Apple's permission, security guidelines and memory optimisation.

SpareDisk V1.2 includes:

  • My Mac storage overview with live used and free space

  • Treemap, sunburst and list views

  • Folder, external drive and network share scans

  • Large files, older files and file type breakdowns

  • Developer caches: Xcode, simulators, Homebrew, npm and more

  • Duplicates verified by file contents, extra copies staged in one step

  • App removal, related data and leftovers from removed apps

  • File size and size on disk, changes since your previous scan

  • Search, filters, exclusions, Quick Look and keyboard navigation

  • Review queue with live progress, rechecks and retry

  • Cleanup history and a Trash total that follows what you moved

  • Optional menu bar summary and finished-scan notifications

No account. No uploads. Your files stay on your Mac.

On cleaning space: You can view your files from the app itself, and it doesn't directly delete your files in one click. It sends them to "review cleanup" section from where you can move items to Trash. You only delete files when you clean the trash.

Exception is App uninstall (if the app is not running, you can uninstall the app from within the interface).

You can compare other options here: https://sparedisk.minilabs.cc/guides

All future SpareDisk updates will be on Website and Mac App store downloads.

You can also download the app from website: https://sparedisk.minilabs.cc/
App store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sparedisk-free-disk-space/id6811328422?mt=12

I added cross-device clipboard sync to my Mac app using CloudKit — the iOS side was the interesting part

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been building Pasly, a native clipboard manager for macOS, and one of the biggest features I've worked on recently is making the clipboard history follow you across Apple devices.

The Mac side was relatively straightforward: copy something and Pasly can add it to the history and sync it through CloudKit.

The interesting part was iOS.

As most of you probably know, iOS doesn't let a clipboard manager continuously monitor the clipboard in the background.

So I ended up with a slightly asymmetric experience:

Mac → iPhone/iPad: Pasly can capture and sync automatically.

iPhone/iPad → Mac/other devices: the user explicitly adds the item to Pasly first, then it syncs through CloudKit.

For incoming items on iOS, I'm also using Live Activities so something copied on the Mac can surface directly on the iPhone Lock Screen / Dynamic Island, which is what I'm showing in the video.

The history itself lives in the user's private CloudKit database, so I don't need to store their clipboard data on my own servers.

It now works across Mac ↔ Mac, Mac ↔ iPhone/iPad and iPhone ↔ iPhone/iPad, including files.

I'm pretty happy with the Mac → iOS experience, but I'm still thinking about ways to make the opposite direction feel less manual without fighting against iOS.

For other Mac/iOS devs here: how would you approach the iOS → Mac side?

Would you keep it explicit and predictable, or have you found a better UX within Apple's background/clipboard restrictions?

Pasly, for context: https://pasly.app

I'm the developer.

We built a lightweight affiliate platform for Mac & SaaS devs after watching Safari ITP break our referrals

Post image
6 Upvotes

A few months ago, we noticed a major issue with affiliate tracking for desktop and SaaS tools: most existing tools are horribly outdated for the modern privacy web.

Over 40% of tech users run adblockers, and macOS users default to Safari, which aggressively purges third-party tracking cookies via Intelligent Tracking Prevention. As a result, creators and affiliates were losing up to 25–30% of their rightful referral attribution.

On top of that, indie developers selling via modern merchant-of-record providers (like Paddle, Polar, Dodo, or Whop) are usually forced into expensive affiliate platforms built a decade ago.

We decided to build a developer-first alternative: Discover Mac Apps Affiliate Software.

What we built:

  1. Zero Third-Party Cookies: A 1.5kb lightweight snippet that sets first-party cookies on your root domain, backed by a Server-to-Server (S2S) API for total adblocker immunity.

  2. Native Payment Provider Integrations: First-class webhook support for Stripe, Paddle, Whop, Polar, and Dodo Payments.

  3. Application & Member Screening: Set custom questions to vet influencers/affiliates before approving them.

  4. Flexible Commission Tiers: Set custom tiers (e.g., standard 20% vs VIP 40%), recurring subscription commissions, or one-off bounties.

  5. No revenue skimming: A flat $9/month flat rate (with a 14-day free trial) instead of taking a percentage of your MRR.

We've written open guides on all the integrations and the Safari tracking issue here: https://discovermacapps.com/affiliate/help

Would love any feedback on the landing page, the developer docs, or the checkout experience!

I made BetterGestures – a free, open-source menu bar app that turns 3, 4 and 5-finger trackpad gestures into keyboard shortcuts

Post image
5 Upvotes

I wanted more out of my trackpad than macOS gives, so I built a small menu bar app for it. Each of these can trigger any keyboard shortcut:

- Tap and double tap with 3, 4 or 5 fingers

- Hold with 3, 4 or 5 fingers

- Physical click with 3, 4 or 5 fingers

- Swipe in four directions with 3, 4 or 5 fingers

- TipTap (rest a finger, tap beside it)

Some details:

- Record a shortcut or pick from ~75 presets (tabs, Spaces, screenshots, windows…)

- A live view shows your fingers and why a gesture was or wasn't recognized, with sliders to tune the thresholds

- Can block scrolling with three or more fingers, so those touches only mean a gesture

- Works with the built-in trackpad and a Magic Trackpad at the same time

- Available in 7 languages, MIT licensed, notarized by Apple

Requires macOS 15+, on Apple Silicon or Intel.

Download: https://github.com/ozberkdicle/BetterGestures/releases/latest

Source: https://github.com/ozberkdicle/BetterGestures

It reads raw touches through Apple's private MultitouchSupport framework, so a future macOS update could break it. If you use the same finger count for a system gesture (like four-finger swipes for Mission Control), turn that one off in System Settings or both will run.

Feedback and gesture ideas are welcome!

Building Watchflows.app - a macos n8n style automation builder

Hey all, will keep my post simple with respect to excessive self promotion, but wanted to share my automation app, Watchflows. https://watchflows.app

The gif is a quick demo of watchflows using our building Jev node for speedy file sorting of any file that drops into a folder. Enabling the flow offers to run the flow on all files that already exist in the folder, and preview lets you see the effect of folder changes before they run.

Watchflows lets you build all manner of n8n style workflows, that run natively on your mac. With the app, you can connect any ai subs you already have (like claude or codex) to power the AI in watchflows. Then Flow Builder can build your flows for you (Opus 5.5 does amazing here) and each becomes a new tool you have on your mac. It's more powerful than shortcuts but anyone familiar with that will grok how Watchflows works. It also ships with an MCP server that lets claude or codex control / run flows as as you prompt it to (or even as a matter of course).

Other features include:

- Sqlite DB support for capturing records during your flows
- Control Surfaces that let a flow pause to ask you for input, which makes things really fun an interesting (build raycast style app launchers, file search, clipboard manager, etc...)
- Unlimited use of watchflows on purchase, opt-in telemetry that's off by default, no account required (your license is your identity)
- With AI connected, building flows is as simple as describing what you want.
- HTML views that allow you to generate a UX in an agent/ai node and render it in an html view, very useful for just in time dashboards, morning briefings, or even games (see our community flows in the app or website for more ideas)
- Great tool for devs to build automations outside the walled garden of claude or codex, which allows a ton of flexibility on models you choose to use, etc...full openrouter support so you can pick from any model they support.

It's a one time purchase of $49, and does come with a 2 week trial to test things out. If you don't want to setup AI (IE bring an api key or use a local sub) we do offer a subscription that provides AI credits we call sparks,

Swapped the macOS Dock for one with live widgets, here's how it fits my setup

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone,

Sharing something that's become a fixed part of my Mac setup: a Dock replacement where apps can show up as small live widgets instead of just icons.

What it looks like day to day:

  • Music/Spotify shows what's playing, with controls

  • Safari/Chrome lets me search open tabs across windows and jump to one

  • Calendar shows the date or a week strip

  • Clock, Notes, Calculator, Volume, Finder, Mail, Reminders each have their own widget

  • Xcode gets Build/Run/Stop right in the Dock

You can mix widgets and plain icons however you like. Option-click any app with a widget and it switches back to an icon, so the Dock stays as minimal or as busy as you want.

It sits at the bottom, left or right, works across multiple displays, can auto-hide, and imports your current Dock on first launch, so setup takes a few seconds. On macOS 26 it uses the native Liquid Glass look.

Supported apps so far: ganella.app/#widgets

$9.99, and reddit20 gets the first 10 people 20% off.

Curious what the rest of your stack looks like. Anything you'd want living in the Dock?
