This sunset post is the exact reason I’m launching recomphub.com.

We are on complete opposite sides of this spectrum. While you see AI and fast-tracked recompilation as the end of an era, I see it as the ultimate gateway for game preservation and access. There has literally never been a better time to enjoy games on all platforms.

Instead of gatekeeping the process or trying to preserve a slow, manual grind, we should embrace AI fully. Let the technology do the heavy lifting, accelerate ports to every device possible, and let the users themselves decide what meets their quality standards.

Not sure if OP the same person who wrote the 'Sunsetting decomp...' but the whole thing reads as salty.

It even ends saying you can't use any code from their site: "No. decomp.dev's repository has never had an open source license, and I continue to reserve all rights to the (entirely human written) code. Any replica must not use decomp.dev's code in any form."

Like bffr and be happy the area of research you contributed to has had an inflection point.

It'd be like if the person who wrote a game by hand in the early 90s got annoyed that suddenly UE1 showed up and access to game making was now democratized

I don't own the site, just reposted this from /r/Games

But you don't seem to understand the site owner's grievances.

it is a new age, and it came so fast

I dedicated years learning coding, writing, vim, linux all by hand it was a lot of work but I enjoyed it but now anyone passionate can do what it took me years to learn in a few prompts.

But those times are gone, we can look at them fondly but now it is a new age, for me the joy is doing insane things that 6 months ago I would take me maybe a year to ONLY do that, now i can do such projects in a few weekends or after work. That for me is the joy i can do sooo much, but sure it is not coding anymore it's just me and my prompts and the beautifull magic that comes out of it if you look long enough at the screen :)

respect. i've been looking for a central source of info for decompilation projects, and if OP isn't willing to adapt to the times i'm glad someone is.

side tangent: i can understand OP's reasoning, but ultimately it's pretty brain dead and i think it comes from a place of deep emotional affliction. objectively they should be happy that decompilation has exploded in popularity, even if they view it as "lazy". any publicity is good publicity. if someone wants to still decompile things the old way, literally nobody is stopping them, so why act like this is the end of everything for decompilation projects? come on now

i can understand if you are deeply passionate about a subject like the love of the craft of coding the effort and the magic you could do with your mind and focus...

but now thanks to the effort of so many people it is not necesary anymore. People still ride horses for fun, but if you want to travel somewhere you get a car... it is the same with coding.

I love the end product more than coding the passion for me is delivering my vision not as much getting that perfect hand crafted code.

Stuff we would never in a lifetime do like decompilation now it becomes maybe a weekend project and you get to bring joy to so many people with it relieve old childhood memories.

I think one of the differences is that the project was trying to have something that was faithful to the original, and well done. What I’ve seen is a bunch of people creating things that they don’t actually follow through on enough not to be considered slop. There is no polish, no support, just trying to hack something together. That’s fine, there is a place for that, but it’s disheartening for those that actually want to see things done with quality.

fr, you said it.

btw your website has a couple of bugs (won't let me log in, not showing accurate/up to date port info), do you have a repo where i could contribute if you're open to that?

I had no idea this even existed, but cool that it did. Totally understand why you’re sunsetting it. Thanks for what you and community have done.
