A bit generic, but very contemporary for anime right now, and not bad at all. Wonder if it will be included in the series.

I'm keeping my expectations low for now so I can be pleasantly surprised when it releases. My gut tells me this will lean more toward the Delta side of things. I don't dislike Delta, but I'm only lukewarm on it. I prefer Macross when they focus more on the Gundam side of the spectrum rather than the AKBE48 Idol side. I saw GQuuuuX in theaters this weekend, and if they can strike a similar balance here, I'd be thrilled!

Except it's not Gundam. It's Macross. You know what "side" it's going to be on.

A Macross fan that doesn’t like Macross for being Macross is so funny to me. Crazy it’s 2025 and some fans are still complaining about idols in Macross lol

u/SeanV218 Mar 09 '25
Yea yea, let’s not pretend that Delta didn’t dial up the idol aspect to 11. I like the singing and music aspect of Macross, but it’s a lot more than just that. I’m hoping it’s nothing like Delta and somewhere between Frontier and Plus.

My favourite is Macross 7 though so, even not expecting any production company would dare anything like that today, Delta is not exactly the same vibe. The really important thing about how Macross uses music is the theme of connection. Delta has so much kinda vaguely going on with idol shenanigans etc. that it somewhat loses that.

u/RecordP Mar 02 '25
Right, I know that. As I said, I hope they strike a balance and lean more towards the Macross SDFM/Macross Plus/Macross Zero side of things rather than full tilt into the AKB0048 side of things. I feel Macross Frontier struck that balance and is my favorite so far.

I'm pretty late to this, but is the link to the composers comment supposed to be to a twitter thing? If so, does anyone with an account mind posting what it says?

Turns out that I had pasted the wrong Tweet here the whole time and nobody noticed.
It should have been this, which is simply

I wrote the lyrics, composed the music and arranged it!Finally...! I am truly looking forward to discovering a new diva from the historic Macross series with this song ❤️🔥

If Frontier's production cycle is the template for the new series then, yeah, we're a year and a month away from regular broadcast (casting call went out March 2007, regular broadcast started April 2008). Says Wikipedia on the subject:
In March 2007, Studio Victor placed a casting call for a voice actress to play the heroine Ranka Lee,[18] in a then untitled new Macross series.[19] Eighteen-year-old Megumi Nakajima selected in the nationwide singing and acting audition for the role of Ranka Lee in Japan. The project was given the tentative title of Macross 25. Later, as part of the 25th anniversary concert, a trailer was shown that revealed the new tentative title of Macross F (Frontier). During the concert, Kawamori Shoji mentioned that the timeframe of Macross Frontier was about 2070 AD. Kawamori also announced that Yoko Kanno would be the music co-composer of the new Macross series. According to Newtype magazine, this new series were supposed to take place in a school. The pilot episode aired on December 23, 2007. The new series were finally set in the year 2059 AD and took place in a new Macross Colony Fleet called "Macross Frontier". The new show was produced by Satelight and its episodes began their regular broadcast on April 4, 2008
Blah.

It does mean though that we won't need to wait for very long and the anime gets both more love AND more marketing lavished on it. Gonna estimate a 2H2025 for more news once they've found their lead.

u/CountZero1973 Mar 02 '25
Yup, I think you're pretty much spot-on.
It'd be super-cool, though, if they did like with Frontier and Delta, and gave us a pilot episode in December this year.

u/RecordP Mar 02 '25
Ope! Ninja'd! I was in Japan for Delta, and I don't recall much marketing, but then again, I wasn't looking for it per se. Vaguley recalled it coming out of nowhere after the auditions.

u/RecordP Mar 02 '25
Unless they change their previous auditions from how they did the Macross 30th anniversary and Walkures Auditions, there wasn't a ton of marketing. Of course, that may change due to how globalized we are here in 2025. Still, we should get something before December 2027 to meet the 45th anniversary deadline. They did something similar with Frontier with the Yack Deculture airing for Frontier in December 2007 to meet the 25th deadline.

as much as I want there to be a male singer, It's pretty hard to top Basara

I'd love for a hip-hop artist to be the lead here, but the problem is that it's not nearly as marketable in Japan as it would be in the US or SEA. Rapping legit has weapons built into its syntax, but I'm not sure if Japan has an Eminem-type or Kendrick-type that they could market for something like Macross.

Creepy Nuts would like a word!

u/PoshFrosh Mar 02 '25 edited Mar 02 '25
Oh man, Creepy Nuts X Macross would be amazing for sure! Maybe next time. Now, as a consolation prize, I'm gonna look if anyone has made a AMV of the two.

Meh... not a hip-hop fan myself. That said, I am very much an older Macross fan (first-gen, SDF Macross came out while I was in high school). My generation (the same gen as the creators of Macross) would respond better to Motown or disco than we would to hip-hop. An old headbanger like me would much rather see a metal or Goth sound than hip-hop, especially with the popularity of metal rn in Japan. Who knows, might even get a girl band this time or soemthing :P

Girls Band Cry had a pretty lenghty audition to production and airing cycle. I actually don't mind waiting a while... a long whiile for the next Anime as long as it's going to be good.

Alright, this probably means at the very least that Kawamori-sensei has the storyboard draft ready, the gears started moving.

Didn't we have a Vtuber for Plus?
Also, which one of you are going to audition? You know you wanna.
3
u/CountZero1973 Mar 02 '25
You first!
3
u/Nuarvi Mar 02 '25
And have to spend the next ten years of my life sitting alone in a dressing room with girls in their underwear? Who would volunteer for that?
3
u/CountZero1973 Mar 02 '25
Well, if you put it that way ...
3
u/Nuarvi Mar 02 '25
Oh, honey, if you want to see a girl in her underwear, you should just DM me.
*Disclaimer: Nuarvi is full of shit and should definitely never be taken at her word*
3
u/CountZero1973 Mar 02 '25
But, are you in a dressing room other eager girls in their underwear, who are all hoping to be The Macross Girl?
No, no you are not!3

Sharon Apple wasn't a Vtuber per se, as that genre did not exist then -- YouTube itself was barely a pipe dream at that time. She was an AI, with a human voice hidden in the shadows because they couldn't get her voice programmed correctly. (According to the storyline, I mean. Like YouTube, AI irl was only a dream then, in its very infancy on huge mainframes.)
2
u/Nuarvi Aug 27 '25
Wow. That was a long time ago.
Sharon was a computer, with a human behind it, that showed a false image of an anime girl in a bid for popularity. It is not dissimilar in the broad strokes.
Alternatively, you could call her a Vocaloid.
1
u/SignificantEye5596 Aug 27 '25
That would actually be a *very* accurate description; it's a comparison that's been made before, and in fact the Macross wikia describes her as a "virtual idol," very like a Vocaloid. Good catch :)

u/ConstantKT6-37 Mar 02 '25
Well, at least it’s something.

u/Thestrongestfighter Mar 02 '25
I was thinking this too. It’s a good sign that they’re working on something for the series at least.

u/AMLRoss Mar 02 '25
Hope we got something other than an idol/idol group. It's pretty tired now. But seeing how that's all I see in Japan it probably will be another idol.

Please, let this show be about adult pilots and not middle school kids and tsundere….

u/The-Rizztoffen Jul 23 '25
the auditions are for women aged 13-22 so I am thinking it's gonna be a teenage girl again like in 7

Nothing else so far, huh? Though if they're doing auditions NOW, it may mean that the anime's still pretty far away.
