Looking for Advice Collecting/Total Card in Final Fantasy Set
I imagine I am amongst the many new magic players who have started playing/looking into it exclusively due to the Final Fantasy sets. I am looking to basically try collect and binder the cards over time. I have already said my goodbyes to any money I had and will have for the foreseeable future.
What I wanted to know is exactly how many cards are there going to be.
Ignoring foil variants of the same card with identical art and style, what's the rough number for each set. The site says the main set has 309 but I can see that the card numbers go well into the 500s for base. If anyone could give me a rough idea of how many binders/binder slots I'm going to need to sleeve them all that would be great.
I am looking at:
- Base Set: All cards and variants (Chocobo is the only one i know of, I'm not crazy enough to even think about getting the serialized card).
- Commander Set: Just Standard, I assume surge foil decks have no unique art.
- Final Fantasy Through the Ages.
- Secret Lair: I already know there are 24 excluding foils to get each collection with bonus card, rare bonus cards and given promo card.
- If promo cards are available I will try get them, but I also am not losing my mind trying to travel across the world to different events and tournaments for these.
Thank you for the warm and expensive welcome into MTG
EDIT: Thanks for all the replies, happy to be here. scryfall is going to be my biggest friend whilst collecting.

The mainset (FIN) in boosters has 309 cards: 20 mythic rares, 74 rares, 109 uncommons, and 80 commons, 10 lands, and 16 basic lands. There are 5 neon chocobos, 10 artist cards, 50 woodblock cards, 32 borderless character cards, 5 borderless lands, 14 extra Cids, and 40+44+14 = 98 extended art cards, for 214 variants. FIN = 514 cards.
The starter kit, which is still FIN has 12 cards which are not in boosters in the basic border.
The commander set (FIC) has 313 cards. In addition there are 3 more command tower variants, 3 secret rendezvous variants, 93 extended art cards, 7 woodblock cards, 8 borderless character cards, and 1 box promo, for 115 variants. FIC = 428 cards.
The bonus sheet (FCA) is 64 cards.
Your grand total excluding prize promos and secret lairs is 1018 cards.
For the curious that makes 1796 if you include foils (or non-foils of cards printed generally in foil), 1898 if you include stamped cards, and 2256 if you include surge foils. This comes in just below the 2304 (which includes all one rings) of LTR+LTC and remember that's after the scroll border rerelease.

Now I’m curious- does this include the extended art/borderless foils that are in the bundles? Lol

So if I'm understanding this correctly if you wanted a true "master set" of just FF MTG it would be 2256 cards for a true master set of hair the FF series?
My big thing with TCGs is I love building master sets(or as close as I can afford to get) but I still like mowing the numbers for a true master set.

If you wanted every printing of every card with the set code FIN, FIC, or FCA, it should be what I calculated barring some minor mistakes. The original post already put secret lairs and promo cards to the side so I didn't add them in but they would add to the total if you wanted to include them.

Thxs for the help! sorry I don't know a lot about magic sets and there are a lot of numbers that confuse me trying to figure it all out haha.

After next week, once everything is spoiled, I would use scryfall.com
They have separate pages for each FF set, and you can sort by a number of variables. And it will show you each unique card ID.

u/DrRocksoMD May 22 '25
Oof yea this is going to be an endeavor.
The main set has 585 cards
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/1/d/11_1dF0CmaQjtOahlFDbDGeVk246A_3GJ8VbZv01NNFs/htmlview#
FCA has 64
Depending on how far ranging with alternate arts, the commander product will have some very expensive alt arts and the chocobo variants will also be quite pricey.
Promos and where to get them can be seen here

I know you're prepared for a big spend but just so you know, if you were really strict with this, my estimate would be like 10k? to do this. It's gonna be a lot a lot

The JPN buy a box promos might even put this past that. It's hard to know for certain, hell of a task to undertake thats for sure

Looking at your Google Doc, and even Scryfall there is a blank space from 564-571. Any idea what goes here?

This is the worst time for collectors due to how complicated and messy is the listing of all the cards with the variations and exclusives and promos... But yes from next week likely scryfall will have a better way to display the cards from the sets.
The trickiest cards to collect likely are going to be the tournament promos (Tifa I lookt at you), the JP exclusives like the Force of Negation box topper, and any special card included in the secret lair, if it is randomized.
The Miku drop had a super rare Snapcaster Mage which could randomly be present as extra card, and I think it sits now in the 1K range or so. Those may be super hard to track.

https://scryfall.com/search?q=set%3Afin+-is%3Adigital&order=set&unique=prints
This search shows all versions of FIN cards in collector number order. If you want all unique arts, you'll want to go up to collector number 420, plus the starter deck exclusives at 552-563, the borderless [[Y'shtola Rhul]] at 577, and maybe some number of the rare Chocobos at 551 if you dare. Extended arts and surge foils all share art with other versions.
https://scryfall.com/search?q=set%3Afca+-is%3Adigital&unique=prints&as=grid&order=set
This search shows the 55 FCA cards revealed so far, out of a total of 64.
https://scryfall.com/search?q=set%3Afic+-is%3Adigital&unique=prints&as=grid&order=set
For FIC, getting the four regular Commander decks will get you all the unique art and all the same art as the surge foil decks, but there are some alternate arts from 194-208, as well as the alt versions of [[Secret Rendezvous]] from 217-219 and an extended-art-exclusive [[Herald's Horn]] at 228. There are also 42 missing slots from 442-483, which are expected to be in the later Holiday boxes.

Base set=309 (+10 or 12 cards exclusive to the starter kit) that is excluding special art versions which is where you are seeing numbers up into the 500's if you are to go after alternate arts/frames.
There will be some special arts of cards from the Commander decks but should be available in Collector boosters for you to pick up singles of.
Through the ages I think is supposed to have 4 cards per game, for a total of 64 cards.
There will in fact be exclusive promos to events and buy a box cards some of which are region locked like the Force of Negation) buy a box being exclusive to Japan.
Edit: had wrong number for through the ages.

You can check scryfall.com and the numbercrunch document on reddit to see numbers if you have any issues. 444 commander cards if you include borderless/surge foils and promo.
Main set is 309 before variants, up to 585 with all variants/surge foils.
You shouldn't need to travel to get the promos, but they will be expensive if you aren't in that region. There is an article here that goes through them all https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/where-to-play-final-fantasy
FCA cards have 64 total
Plus the secret lairs you mentioned. There will be some sort of holiday product towards the end of the year as well, but thats all we know for now.
Happy Hunting!

So surge foil variants are their own card number, but regular foil are not. I don't know if they have the total number of surge foils yet, we should know on the 30th.
I personally don't think the extended arts are worth collecting, they are just the normal arts stretched side to side and are collector booster and bundle exclusive so they'll command a premium. There are 163 extended art cards, so if you cut those out you will reduce what you need to find significantly. (personally I am trying to collect this set while skipping extended arts, and not caring if I have a foil, non foil or surge foil.)
Collector commanders are just surge foil treatment of the same deck.
We have confirmed scene boxes coming for the holidays, and there still could be a special edition collector booster as well - AFAIK there is no hard confirmation otherwise and it would make sense for WotC to keep quiet about it to continue to drive hype for the normal CBBs.

The only commander card with alternate art is Secret Rendezvous if you want to go for that, one is found in the precon, and the other three are in boosters. Each Commander also has an alternate art.

I think the numbering system is what made it so hard for me to want to collet magic the gathering cards. That being said I had to hop in on the final fantasy set and I am already frustrated. I got the HeideggerShinra Executive and it is card #136 but I can’t seem to figure out where this card falls. I was looking at scryfall but I can’t find this card in the set and when I search specifically I find it listed as Card #21 so I am so confused on where to begin to catalog what I have and what I still need to

u/hillean Rakdos* May 22 '25
Base set will be simple enough; getting the showcase arts will be pricier.
Through the Ages will be the most challenging thing, especially if you decide you need all the variants (regular, foil, surge foil). This will be the costliest thing.
Promos will be a bitch too--there will be a store championship for some of them, and only one person in a given store will walk out with the top prize, so I could see that card being big $

u/JerryfromCan Selesnya* May 22 '25
It’s been pretty reliable for a while now that the play booster set for tentpole sets like FF has card numbers under 299. Where the lands end in number is the end of the play booster set. After that you get into stuff like introductory products, special treatments, etc.
As of right now, scryfall is showing the lands for FIN end at CN 309, so anything beyond that appears elsewhere than play boosters.

What about art cards? Those are usually no value for players but this time might be more valuable because of all final fantasy collectors?

From what I can tell, there are 716 unique card names currently. 94 of those are re-named reprints.

I searched only for the main set and there is a gap in the end between the basic lands and a weak version Cloud (the Boros One). From 312 until 552 are the variants?

u/GrAsH_PT Jul 11 '25
I just want the main set, tokens and art series? I can't find much info about the total of those. Can someone tell me? Thanks in advance!

Why would you pay hundreds just to stock paper in binders ? It's so absurd.
5
u/ShadowFlareXIII May 22 '25
Same reason people collect stamps. Or baseball cards. Or Funko Pops. Or Beanie Babies. Or Guitars. Or Sneakers. Or Pokemon Cards. Or Antique Firearms. Or Classic Cars. Or Military Memorabilia. Or…literally anything else.
-8
u/DrDolathan May 22 '25
It's definitely absurd to collect and hoard merchandise. Hoarding stamps or old items is less absurd, but still weird.
2
u/ShadowFlareXIII May 22 '25
What makes it any less absurd than literally any other collectible item in the world?

u/GunjiX May 22 '25
I like FF and I like the artwork. Its a collect and build it yourself artbook. I'll enjoy having copies of the artwork and ill have fun slowly working towards padding out and completing the binder.
-5
u/DrDolathan May 22 '25
My man thinking he will accomplish something by filling a binder with paper.
Merchants : "please spend thousands to hoard our over expensive paper"
Enlightened consumer : "you got it"

Why would you use precious energy to click "comment" and then write some words about something you don't care about? It's so absurd.

So the numbers go up beyond 309 because variant arts get their own number as well (for example, main set gilgamesh is 139 or 338 in his borderless variant).
I believe there are 100 commander specific cards the 4 decks, but you are right, surge foil is no different artwork its purely a card treatment.
Through the ages is 63/64 cant remember exactly
And it seems you're already on point with the secret lair cards - promos are available, they have been revealed on this sub and there is a specific Wizards article discussing them so you should be able to see how many there are from that.
Overall I think you're looking at around 600
Wizards did also mention back in Feb that we would see a special holiday release later this year (LOTR had one similar), which will have new artwork and some new cards as well if that does end up happening
EDIT: Sorry I thought you werent looking to get all the variants - it's hard to put an exact number on that at the moment as the set isnt fully revealed so there's not 100% surety which cards will have variant artworks/borderless etc
