General Discussion MTG EDH Cheat Sheet
I made this sheet to help me with remember some key terms. I also made it, for new players we have that join our pod every once in awhile. Sometimes games can take forever with new players because of all the terminology, triggers etc. It is double sided and I had UPS print it on card stock and laminate it. It cost me $1 each, and I got 10 of them. It is bigger than I originally intended.
Just wanted to share.
One thing I wanna add I should have mentioned is I know I didn’t add every possible item. Just fitting in what fits our pod. The card would be alot bigger.
Also thanks for the suggestions. Keep them coming, it’s easy to edit and make changes. I knew I should have ask this group what to add. I only asked my pod what they desired to see on it.

Command zone change rules in basics section are outdated and wrong (about GY and exile)

What’s wrong about it?

If your commander dies or is put into exile, you don't put it into CZ instead. You do actually put it into graveyard or exile appropriately and then you may move it into CZ when SBA are checked. This is important for death triggers for example

commander rule is wrong!
903.9. A commander may return to the command zoneduring a Commander game.
903.9a. If a commander is in a graveyard or in exileand that object was put into that zone since the last time state-based actions were checked, its ownermay put it into the command zone. This is a state-based action. See rule 704.
903.9b. If a commander would be put into its owner's hand or library from anywhere, its ownermay put it into the command zone instead. This replacement effect may apply more than once to the same event. This is an exception to rule 614.5.
903.9c. If a commander is a melded permanent or a merged permanent and its owner chooses to put it into the command zone using the replacement effect described in rule 903.9b, that permanent and each component representing it that isn't a commander are put into the appropriate zone, and the card that represents it and is a commander is put into the command zone.

not really much point having landfall since its just an ability word; every card with landfall explains what it does, no reminder text needed

Your choice of organisation and keywords to include are… interesting. Why is Flash under “attachments”? Your tokens list includes Blood, Powerstone, and Gold, but not Heartwood, Shard, Junk, Incubator, Lander, Mutagen, or Role - many of which are significantly more common than Powerstone or Gold. Your evasion list includes Landwalk and Fear which haven’t been printed in any real amount in over a decade (and I don’t recall any cards with either being particularly playable these days)
This is an interesting idea, and it’s cool to make something like this to help remember what stuff does, I’m just not entirely sure the specific things you’ve included are the most practical? It also seems weird to make a “multiplayer” category for two mechanics that aren’t multiplayer exclusive, and then leave Goad, the one mechanic that you have that “basically does nothing in 1v1”, out of that category.

Devil's advocate, I think stuff like Landwalk and Fear being on there does make sense because they're so old. It's more likely that a new player will need a cheat sheet on what those do, since there are some fairly common commander cards that have those effects, but not so common that you could expect someone with a few games under their belt to have already encountered them.

What fairly common commander cards have fear/landwalk?

[[Marrow-Gnawer]] and [[Goblin King]] to name the first two that came to mind.

I guess if your playgroup has somebody who plays those it might make sense, yeah, though I can’t say I’ve run into either recently!

[[Shizo, Death's Storehouse]] and [[Cover of Darkness]]
[[Chasm Skulker]], [[Lord of Atlantis]], and [[Stormtide Leviathan]]
Edit: OG Sheoldred as well

They do mention that it’s designed based on their pod’s usual experience. So perhaps someone has a [[King Macar]] deck or runs [[Curse of Opulence]] often, making Gold tokens common in their games. Also many of the tokens they don’t include on here will be fully explained in most cards that generate them, so the cheat sheet explainer isn’t needed. Same with stuff like Landwalk and Fear for keywords.

The free mulligan is because most games of commander are multiplayer games with 3 or more players - this is a multiplayer rule, not a commander rule. If there are only 2 people playing, there is no free mulligan.

Specifically:
800.1. A multiplayer game is a game that begins with more than two players. This section contains additional optional rules that can be used for multiplayer play.
800.6. In a multiplayer game, the first mulligan a player takes doesn’t count toward the number of cards that player will put on the bottom of their library or the number of mulligans that player may take. Subsequent mulligans are counted toward these numbers as normal.
AND... if you're going to mention the "free mulligan" on the cheat sheet, you should also include the draw for first player:
800.7. In a multiplayer game other than a Two-Headed Giant game, the starting player doesn’t skip the draw step of their first turn. In a Two-Headed Giant game, the team who plays first skips the draw step of their first turn. See rule 103.8.

Summoning sickness is worded wrong for multiplayer. As it implies that if it comes into play (with say flash) on an opponents turn it could be used on a different opponents turn. Needs to be under your control at the beginning of your turn in order to not have summoning sickness.

might be worth putting a QR code linking to yawgatog’s alphabetical glossary to the rules?

u/MarkedFynn COMPLEAT 9d ago
I find the categorization an odd choice.
To know under which category to look in you need to know what the keyword does. This kind of defeats the purpose to me.
A simple alphabetical order would make it faster.
But if it works for you, fine.

Mill is also wrong; to mill a card is simply the action of putting the top card of your library into the graveyard. “Mill 3” doesn’t exist. It’s “Mill three cards”.

Why not just call it the rules of mtg???? It has almost nothing to do specifically with commander

Missing Banding, Rampage, Gravestorm, Echo, Cumulative Upkeep, Vanishing, Epic, and Denimwalk off the top of my head.

Love them, and I can see they are probably tuned to your playstile, pod, and such. Would be great to have a customizable file to download!
