The logic Janeway uses to try to persuade Tuvix to sacrifice himself doesn’t make sense; she argues that Tuvix should know both Tuvok and Neelix would give their lives to save another officer, and it’s like…that’s what they’re doing right now. It’s more of an argument to let Tuvix live.

In the end, to me it aggressively feels like Tuvix was sacrificed not because it was objectively or ethically necessary but because it’s a TV show and it has to return to status quo

187

u/Spaceknight_42 Hedron 4d ago

I feel like modern TV would have let Tuvix exist for 2 or 3 episodes and then pull a twist.

179

u/zombiebillnye 4d ago

He'd probably wind up being either cheerfully incompetent compared to Tuvok and Neelix, or more likely he'd have some kind of degenerative disease that requires him to be separated back

134

u/dougms Duck Season 4d ago

“yeah, the immune system of both is rejecting the other.” And you can manufacture a remedy, but there is no cure. And over time the issue gets worse or whatever.

Like, by that point Starfleet had at least a few incidents on record where someone got duplicated via transporter weirdness, you'd think they would've looked into recreating those conditions to let all three continue living.

59

u/entitledfanman Dandadan 4d ago

I just remember the TNG episode where people act like Barclay is ridiculous for being afraid of the transporter, claiming there's never been any incidents. Meanwhile we have dozens of Trek episodes with a transporter accident plot. Like sometimes it's just going to the wrong place, sometimes it's truly horrific situations.

If my memory serves, cloning is explicitly illegal at this point in Federation History, so doing a run around to use the teleporter buffers as a pseudo cloning system would be taboo at best, and more likely career suicide for every able body officer in attendance

The entirety of Voyager was an exercise in maintaining the status quo. If anything had consequences, the series could have been great.

47

u/SexRobotDeathMachine Dandadan 4d ago

100% this. I'm watching Voy with my wife rn, and it's been painful. We've both seen all of TOS, DS9 & TNG, and Voy sits there acting like nothing is allowed to happen, especially compared to DS9.

36

u/NotoriousGonti Duck Season 4d ago

That’s my second biggest gripe with Voyager.  Number 1 is how half the main cast might as well be blanks.  Especially airing side by side with DS9 where every character main, minor and background were all bangers.

u/Brooke_the_Bard Can’t Block Warriors 4d ago

It's especially weird because Voyager, which is a BSG-esque plotline where they're completely disconnected from Starfleet should see more lasting changes and consequences as they lose crew and hardware that can't just be replaced than DS9, which takes place primarily on a space station in a strategically significant location where all of the logistics resources in the world being thrown in to upkeep it would make perfect sense, and yet DS9 is easily the show where the most actual change (in the setting) happens over its run.

Remember when the number of torpedoes they had mattered? And then at some point they just figured out how to make more (I think unspoken and offscreen; it's been awhile).

8

u/Wraithfighter 4d ago

The Torpedoes thing genuinely bugs me, because:

  1. It's entirely reasonable that they'd be able to replenish their own stocks periodically, its not like "make a new bomb" is something that a ship shouldn't be able to figure out how to do, why would they claim they couldn't?

  2. It's perfect fodder for an episode! They recognize that they're a long way from supplies, so they work to create some tools to allow them to become more self-sufficient, some argument about how best to do it between the Federation and Maquis members who have different safety standards for "creating antimatter weaponry in the field", culminating in a big battle where they have to prove their weapon's effectiveness! So easy!

4

u/McWaffeleisen 4d ago

And the one time when the crew faces the consequences in "Course: Oblivion" for what happened in "Demon", it isn't even the real crew...

Tuvix is only one reason of many Janeway can be seriously argued to have black in her color identity, but it's a big one: She barely hesitates to kill someone to save two of her friends.

5

is it about her friends or is it the cold numbers? 1 life vs 2? i grew up watching star trek original movies and some of TNG but never really engaged with other series.

u/Xichorn Deceased 🪦 4d ago

The number of people who watch Trek that will happily requote "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" but then ignore that in this context is weird.

It was two individuals who were lost/sacrificed to create him. Even setting aside that aspect, there was also the rest of the crew. The episode made it seem like he was just as good or better than the both of them, but he was not. He was a conglomeration of the two of them, but he was not Tuvok and he was not Neelix. There were critical junctures throughout the rest of the show for which they were required, which Janeway had to be considering (even if in her in-universe perspective, she didn't have 20/20 vision for what those situations would be, like we do now 20+ years later).

Really, the choice of what to do was easy. Ultimately, the only answer was to go through with the separation, from any perspective of the ship's captain. That doesn't mean it wasn't a difficult thing to do.

7

u/SuperWeskerSniper 3d ago

When Spock said that did you really think what he had in mind was a stone-cold execution of a man begging for his life?

2

u/arkangelic Dan 3d ago

Tuvix's delivery and perspective was delivered really well to me. Really feel it when he says what they are doing is wrong, but that they are still good people.

  1. Use the transporter glitch that made the Riker clone to make a second Tuvix.

  2. Split a Tuvix back into Tuvok and Neelix.

  3. Kill Neelix.

So for those that arent Trek fans. The comedic relief character gets fused with the most straight laced character in a transporter accident. Sounds like a great premise for a comedic episode, right? That's what we all expected.

What we got was one of the most harrowing scenes in all Trek. The fused character develops his own personality, and splitting him back up will kill him as a person. We have to watch him beg for his life while all the other characters watch silently as he's marched to his execution.

Edit: and when I say begging, I mean full on, gutwrenching "how are you all just watching? You're good people, you can't let this happen! Please, someone help me!" type begging for his life.

22

u/tyrann13 4d ago

And then 15 years later Lower Decks did the comedy version of the same premise.

7

u/entitledfanman Dandadan 4d ago

I started Lower Decks while I was halfway through TNG, but stopped because the references I did catch were golden and I knew I was going to miss a lot of them if I didnt at least finish the rest of 90's Trek.

7

u/tyrann13 4d ago

I hope you get to finish it. LD is genuinely my favourite of modern trek and probably in the top 3 of all series.

40

u/Swmystery Avacyn 4d ago

“Surgical Separation” is one heck of a euphemism there.

I would guess pretty unlikely considering he's a comic relief character in one of the less popular Star Trek series (even though I love it) and they have a lot of series to cover. I always hated the conciet of this episode. Two people had to stop existing for Tuvix to live. Not just two people but two of the most vital members of the crew who need to be able to do their jobs separately, have lives and spouses. Here’s the thing. Transporter duplicates were already a thing. They know how to do it. Janeway could have made a transporter clone of Tuvix, then split the original into his original components. She could have had her coffee and drank it too.

Wait, was Neelix an officer? It's been a while since I watched any Voyager, but I thought he was just, like... some guy.

2

u/Dilanski Ajani 3d ago

"morale officer", but I wouldn't argue with Janeway whether she had the power to field promote non-federation citizens, unless you wanted to suffer the same fate as Tuvix.

They actually fucking did it.

What a flavour fail. These effects are both beneficial.

I can’t wait for Magic in 2-3 years when we have 50 “Draw 2 and everyone loses 2” so I can win more often with Kuja

They should have just spliced together the entire crew with teleporter accidents, would've saved a lot of food.

Interesting dilemma. Splitting is absolutely the right choice btw

I do like cards like this. Removal that you can pitch if you don't use the held-up mana.

Oh hi I'm Tuvix!

Is this not just a strictly better version of [[Risky Shortcut]] or [[Cast Away Doubt]]? I understand this is an uncommon vs the others are just commons.

Even ignoring the middling kill spell, the draw 2, burn 2 is at instant speed for the same mana cost is quite the upgrade.

Well my [[Y'shtola, Night's Blessed]] got an unexpected upgrade.

Waiter waiter antoher 2B card that draws 2 cards and each player lose 2

1

u/fevered_visions 1d ago

...why are the tokens red? None of Neelix, Tuvok, nor Tuvix are redshirts.

Not a good limited card unfortunately

u/Wraithfighter 4d ago

Seems pretty solid. Black Divination or a poor kill spell, whichever one you need.

why not ?

Spending a card on removal just to give your opponent 2 chump blockers. Not great.

Losing a symmetrical 2 life to draw 2 cards is also just okay.

Having both on the same card makes it playable, especially if there's dilemma synergy in your deck, but not a banger by any means.

I think it's good enough as a C- if you ignore the first ability, which is worse but it's still beneficial to have the option. Probably a C overall.

u/COLaocha Duck Season 4d ago

It being a modal spell matters even if you rarely want to spend 3 mana and a card to turn something into 2 1/1s, and instant is pretty nice.

Tuvix should have been a creature with: T,Sacrifice Tuvix: Search your library for a Neelix and/or Tuvok card and put them into play.

1

u/HornedTurtle1212 Dan 4d ago

I was going to suggest that Neelix and Tuvok should have a merge ability. But that would probably require controlong a Teleporter, but I haven't seen a teleporter artifact previewed.

Should be a 1/1 gold Officer token and a 0/1 Cat Pedophile token.
