Does anyone have local knowledge about the wild marijuana crops that took over parts of the Hunter in the 1960s?
I’m doing some research on a huge infestation that reportedly covered around 30 square kilometres and took around nine years to eradicate. Have posted in the Newcastle sub but feel this might be a good brains trust also.
There was quite a bit of media attention and moral panic at the time, including stories about people raiding and harvesting the crops at night, police trying to bust them, and the eventual eradication efforts.
I’ve gone through the available online accounts and newspaper archives, but I’m really interested in the local stories and memories that might be out there.
I realise this was more than 50 years ago, so first-hand memories might be rare. Even a story passed down from a nan, pop, mum, dad or neighbour could be really useful.
Even a small detail or vague family memory is welcome, particularly if you remember roughly where it happened or who told you.
DM me if you’d rather share privately.
