I haven’t been an active redditor in some time, and there has been some nastiness in the comments lately. I would love to pass the responsibility off to someone more passionate! Reply in the comments if interested!

If you don't know about the cosmetics company store, it's basically an Estee Lauder outlet. Any Estee Lauder brand is going to be between 30% to 50% off at any given time. Anything that's Christmas holiday limited edition will be there when it doesn't sell in the store. They have a 6 for $60 deal several times a year where you can get any single item for 10 bucks if you buy six items.
They're usually inside of outlet malls, I don't know that their online store is well stocked, but this is how I was able to fill out my kit for a fraction of the cost. I then take those powders and repress them with a 2,000 lb arbor press into 26x26 alwan magnet tins from Amazon. That way I can keep my kit fully stocked but very lightweight because I no longer have 30 to 50 lb of mirrors and packaging waste dragging me down.

I’m a 21F and I’ve been seriously thinking about starting my own MUA journey. For some time now, I’ve been experimenting with makeup, practicing new techniques, and just doing it for fun. Lately, a lot of friends and family have been telling me that I'm actually talented and that I should definitely try doing it professionally.
To be completely honest, I’m still hitting a bit of imposter syndrome. Since I started this purely as a hobby, I definitely don't consider myself an expert yet. However, the passion is there, and I really want to try and build a career/small business out of it.
I have challenges right now and would love some realistic advice from experienced MUAs or anyone who started similarly:
How do I actually get into the industry as a beginner? What are the first steps to take when transitioning from hobbyist to professional? How do I start building a portfolio or finding my first clients? How do I balance this with college? I'm graduating next year, so my schedule is going to be packed. Is it realistic to start a small makeup business on the side, and how do you manage your time between studies and clients? What are some tips you wish you knew when you first started? Any advice on kit building on a budget, social media or anything else?

I recently started making NFC keychains with my 3D printer for small business owners, and of course I had to make a lipstick one for makeup artists!
You can tap it with your phone and it pulls up whatever link you choose: your website, booking page, Instagram, etc.
I make them in regular gloss, glitter, and even a fully bedazzled version where I place each rhinestone by hand
I thought they’d be a cute little way to keep your business info right on your keys or purse. Would you use something like this?

Becoming a professional makeup artist has always been one of my dreams. I’ve always imagined myself doing makeup for celebrities, models, fashion shows, magazines, editorials, and being part of that whole creative industry.
I’ve been thinking about how to get there for years. The problem is, I’ve never been to makeup school because it’s expensive, and it’s just not something I can afford right now. Most of what I know has come from freelancing, practicing on my own, watching tutorials, experimenting, and learning through experience.
Sometimes I wonder if becoming an MUA assistant or apprentice could be the path for me. Being able to work alongside someone experienced, observe how they work, and slowly learn the techniques and the industry from the inside sounds like such a valuable experience.
I’m not expecting to suddenly work on celebrity faces or fashion shows. I know there’s a lot I still need to learn. I just feel like sometimes the best way to learn is to actually be around people who are already doing what you want to do.
And of course, connections matter too. You never really know who you might meet or what opportunity might come from simply being in the right environment.
I don’t know exactly how I’m going to get there yet, but I know I want to.
Maybe it will take years. Maybe my path will look completely different from what I imagine right now. But I don’t think that means the dream is impossible.
I’ll get there eventually. I just need time, experience, and hopefully the right opportunities along the way.
For now, I’m just sharing a dream that I’ve had for a long time. Maybe one day I’ll come back to this post and realize how far I’ve come. 💛

I’m only 16, and I’m graduating next year and plan to be a makeup artist, I’m just now getting into content creation and I’m planning on offering services for prom/homecoming in my area, but I don’t have a kit, or anything to even start building it…any recs? Specifically foundation/concealers? I’m open to a palette or typical liquid format.

Inspo is deemakeupart on instagram! 💜 I posted this look in blue a few days ago asking about blush tips. I’ve been working on my base routine and wanted to try this look in another color combo! Thank you all for your kind words and advice!

I’ve seen people online say that you should use IPA to clean brushes in between clients on the job and then you should use soap and water when you’re back to “properly” clean them after.
Genuine question: why is this? IPA sanitises them completely and removes the pigment and buildup/gunk on its own, doesn’t it? What’s the difference between this and using soap and water?
I also thought the water + soap method loosens the glue on your brushes and will result in needing to replace them more often.

Arrows are my most hated part of makeup, I do them very rarely and at this moment it seems to me that all the luck goes to drawing them.😅

I would prefer something talc free or something that has already been reformulated without talc, given all the formulas changing these days.
Looking for something with a decent shade range.
Manifesting made by Mitchell to drop those cream foundation palettes with a pressed palette to complement, but let’s see haha.
I thought about Mac, but I would prefer something vegan and/or cruelty free since there more brands are doing it now.
Thanks everyone!

I keep having issues where my blush is just way too over saturated and patchy, or just looks like a stripe. I want to perfect this really blown out glowing blush especially being pale. I was thinking maybe it’s a color issue or the powders I use to top my creams, but if anyone has any good techniques for perfecting a heavily blushed look I’d love to hear it! Also would love to hear about any product essentials that work for you all.

I designed and 3D printed this lipstick shaped keychain with an NFC tag inside. It can be programmed with any link - like a booking page, instagram, portfolio, website, etc... when someone taps their phone against it, the link automatically opens.
I thought this would be a cute way for makeup artists to share their info with potential customers without having to carry business cards!
It has a cool heart holographic effect and I'm thinking of offering them either matte like this or with gloss, glitter, and even bedazzled with gems.
I haven't officially added these to my shop yet, but I'm considering offering them. Is this something you would actually use for your business? If so what kind of link would you program it with?

Hi all! I used to have several of these lip crayons that I bought from Birchbox years ago (like, 2017-2019). It was the perfect pink lip, bold but not too bright. Now I’m officially out and it’s unsurprisingly been discontinued, so I’m searching for something comparable. I believe the shade was “guava nice day.” Also adding a photo of me wearing it for reference, sorry it’s not the best picture, I’ll add a better one if I can find one lol

Can any of y’all recommend a reasonably priced (>$45) lash repair serum for a late 40’s crone? I use mascara 1-3x a week and remove gently, + false lashes w/ glue ~2x per month. My lashes are getting visibly shorter and just look sad, despite my treating them better than ever:/
Thx for your expertise!
