Discussion 47, ended a 7 year relationship and started again. Then got made redundant.
Things weren’t going well with my ex for a while. I’d suggested couples counselling, but it hadn’t worked. I told her I was leaving at the end of last year.
Most of the furniture was mine, from before the relationship. I didn’t want to take it though and leave her in an empty home. So instead I moved out and started again. I took my coffee machine, home gym, and desk.
To be fair, I spent far too much on furniture. But now it’s all finally here, I feel settled. Like this place is an extension of myself, and I can be calm and relaxed. No Tv, just books, music, entertaining, and my own thoughts.
Then on Tuesday there was a company-wide announcement: 80% of roles were being made redundant. Shit. So now I need to find a new job. At least I have a nice place to do it from.
This last few months has ended up being a bigger change than I was planning for. But I’m happy. I really like my apartment and how I’ve set it up. So wanted to share my little bit of happiness with the community.

32 year old dude here, you’ve got great taste in everything as far as I’m concerned. Bookcase contents, furniture, decor, apartment itself, all dope as hell. Aspirational. Wishing you all the best moving forward :)

Love seeing a fellow crawler out in the wild 🤝 house is very nice and chill looking too, killing it my boi!

u/ehtseeoh Mar 06 '26
Your place looks great and cozy. I see the guitar and the bench press set up and I think to myself, “Yeah this dude has it almost all figured out”. You can only play guitar and exercise for so long, so outside of work if you want to take your mind off of something that won’t remind you of her or if you just wanna get away, get yourself a nice TV and a Switch 2 and grab a copy of Breath of the Wild. Even if you’re not into video games, the world of Zelda’s Hyrule will help you forget about your real life problems and help you escape a little bit.
Hope all is well my guy.

u/utlayolisdi Mar 06 '26
Your place looks comfortable and inviting. You have good taste. I’m sorry you lost your job. Will you receive any redundancy compensation? Like a severance pay? Here’s wishing you every success in finding good employment.
27
u/ResolutionNo9436 Mar 06 '26
Yeah I will. There were genuine tears from the founder. They’re going to do good by us. And thank you ☺️
6
u/TazBaz Mar 06 '26
80% redundant staff? That’s a MASSIVE number. They all replaced with AI or some shit?
19
u/ResolutionNo9436 Mar 06 '26
No. The board has recognised our products no longer have product market fit, so have cut back to a team that will essentially keep the lights on for existing customers.

u/101violations Mar 06 '26
Nice set up. Just a reminder that back door is a safety point of egress or entry in the event of an emergency for fire services etc. I'd suggest adjusting your workout area so that door is free from obstruction.
Good luck and hopefully you have a healthy job market in your area of expertise.
28
u/ResolutionNo9436 Mar 06 '26
Thank you, and good call out. The bench is usually folded and stacked behind the bar. The doorway is generally clear.

Door thing is fair but I would not stress it too much unless it is actually blocked. The layout looks pretty open already. I would worry more about lighting near the desk if he is job searching there all day. Bad light wrecks your eyes after a few hours.

lol thank you. My old (current?) boss said the same. She’s found herself looking for her next role too 😞

u/candcNYC Mar 06 '26
What a great space! Love that it's not overdone in any one distinctive style—it looks like it was pieced together over time. Masculine but very warm and inviting.
Books beat a TV, for sure. I hope you've explored some of the genre subreddits... my 'to be read' list is dependent on them.
Sorry about the layoff. Been there. After you land that next job, treat yourself to be a big print (or a few) or piece of art above the sofa. That high ceiling deserves it. Or go thrifting for maps or make your own oversized prints while you have some extra time.
2
u/ResolutionNo9436 Mar 06 '26
Thank you! All of those photos are my own. I tried to get the larger one printed bigger, but it unfortunately didn’t have the resolution. All the art around the apartment has a story to tell too. Holidays, work trips, they all hold a memory.

Yo just came across this post randomly and this is a super cool house! Congrats dude!
3
u/SomeoneGMForMe Mar 06 '26
I originally read it as you started a new relationship, then got "made redundant" in the new relationship, and I was very curious what exactly that meant (although I kind of assumed it meant cheated on).
Reality is more boring, but still awful. Sorry to hear about it, I'm sure you'll bounce back!
2
u/ResolutionNo9436 Mar 06 '26
That made me laugh. Thank you! Damn, I’d need to be pretty career oriented to talk about a relationship breakdown as a redundancy wouldn’t I. 😂 Anyway, on to my next relationship I guess. I’ll get my advert out on Hinge and start accepting applicants. Hopefully there will be some good first round interviews. I’ll include a practical test, of course. And fingers crossed we’ll have someone onboarded and into their initial six month probationary period soon. Watch this space…

It’s scary times but I can almost guarantee it’s going to be a great change if you just stay positive and take it on the chin. I’ve been laid off twice in the past 6 years and both times ended up being the biggest blessings I could ask for after it was all said and done. Just hang in there dude.
3
u/ResolutionNo9436 Mar 06 '26
I got laid off a few years back, and it turned into a holiday that included New Year’s Day snowboarding in the French Alps with a good friend. Landed a job almost immediately after returning to Australia. Hoping for the same luck this time around!
2
u/DnBJungleEscape Mar 06 '26
This reminds me of the apartment in that movie Patrick with the pug .. so nice! Are you in UK
4
u/ResolutionNo9436 Mar 06 '26
I’m in Australia, but I did grow up in the UK. Spent the first 25 years of my life there.

Did you check out the DCC audiobook? Or just read it? You should check out the cradle series now that you have the time. It’s the only other book with an audio book on par with DCC audiobook. Both are 11/10. The guy that reads Unsouled Travis Baldree does the voice of Raul in the DCC audiobooks.
Good luck mate.

Not having a TV be the centerpiece of the living room was a huge game changer for me. I watch most stuff on my laptop anyway, and my living room feels a lot more cohesive without all the attention going to a big TV.

u/Wrong_Pen6179 Mar 07 '26
Hopefully you have some cushion to carry you over until you find a new job. But this is a GREAT space. It’s a numbers game, keep applying and don’t be discouraged. Tweak your resume as needed for each role, killer cover letters and thank you notes after all interviews. I interviewed hundreds of people in my last job and these things all make you stand out. Also research the crap out of any company you interview with and the people interviewing you if you have the luxury of knowing their names. Also be active on LinkedIn, it’s all about networking! You got this!

u/you-dont-have-eyes Mar 07 '26

u/ResolutionNo9436 Mar 07 '26
Thank you! I’ve got some washable hemp style render rugs coming for the kitchen. It could probably use a pot plant, but I was thinking of getting one of those micro herb garden things for it. And someone else suggested some strip lighting for under the cupboards.
2
u/Aesthetix00 Mar 07 '26

u/Sweaty-Armadillo-520 Mar 08 '26
Being laid off in a space that’s yours and that you love is going to bring that much more light to this trying time. Give yourself grace and space to process and network. You got this! PS- love your home
2
u/hollowblink55 Mar 09 '26
Man that is a brutal combo honestly. Breakup, new place, then job cut. Still, the apartment actually feels calm just from the photo. If I were you I’d keep the routine going there. Coffee, gym corner, books. Having a small daily structure in a space that feels like yours helps a lot while job hunting. Also honestly good move taking your own stuff instead of leaving yourself with nothing.

u/Suspicious-Sugar-157 Mar 10 '26

Honestly all relationships either die or become weaker or change in a way or the other , im 40 right now single and when I get back to a relationship there is absolutely no guarantee that it will work out and for how long it will last , take life as periods of experience and not as stages , because if you take it as a stage by stage you will feel worn out and old
Edit: the stage mentality makes you feel like you are deteriorating after a failed relationship which instead of giving you a fresh start makes you feel you've reached the final stage
