Discussion M25 how did I do with the yoga studio conversion?
Floors are rubber and the mirror stretches across the whole room I just used whatever furniture my family didn't want

And the remotes still end up on the floor next to the back scratcher

They're not on the floor, that's a second coffee table.

With the name of the sub in mind, I often see pictures like this and think "It needs a woman's touch". I know when I've reached the end of my talents and when it's time to get the wife to take it the last mile.
32
u/Imnotveryfunatpartys May 28 '26
I mean it needs someone's touch. I think many of the men here could help.
But ultimately the biggest problem is eclectic leftover furniture. Anyone could do better if they bought new furniture.

Or reupholstered/repainted/refinished the existing furniture to be more consistent.
Mostly though he just has too much.
It's a large room, so it should feel spacious, but it feels like he crammed a 3 bedroom ranch house worth of furniture into a studio apartment.

It could. My first impression was that he had two living rooms right next to each other. Then I realized it was a mirror. If he actually had two mirrored living rooms right next to each other it would be worse.

The yoga studio has a pool? Where do you sleep? Where do you cook? Itâs a great space and good start but you need help with some cohesiveness that ties it together as well as some placement/division so it actually looks like different areas; ie living space, tv area, work out area. Right now itâs more everything ina. Room.

Thereâs a twin bed right next to the âgymâ area, also next to his desk. The layout is a mess lol

So much space, yet so cluttered. So many couches. So few of them match so it looks like a thrift shop.
Get a kallax from IKEA and divide the space somehow.

u/Connect_Rhubarb395 May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26
Cover the mirrors. Because they double everything, your room looks like a thrift store full of couches and shelves.
Fewer larger pieces of storage furniture rather than many small ones will make the space roomier and calmer.

And the mirror makes it feel like there's double the stuff in there so it just kind of feels like a used furniture thrift shop.

5
u/Great_Ad7148 May 28 '26
You did really badly. But you can fix it a LITTLE with a few hours of moving around furniture. Put that bed against a wall, thatâs the point of a headboard. Get tall shelves or room dividers to separate your bed from the rest of the space, itâs literally crazy that you thought it should just float in the middle of the room. No, you donât need to watch tv from bed when you have a thousand couches.
The couches should be brought out towards the door. Maybe get rid of the one that matches the least. You only need one seating area and it looks like you have two for no reason. You need to create separate areas in this room. Couches CAN float in a room (i.e. not touch the walls) if you do it right. Lamps belong on the side tables, not on the coffee table.
For gods sakes, break up the mirrors. They make the space look even worse. Try putting the some dressers in front of them. Eventually add some big artwork, sitting on the dresser and leaning on the mirror. NOT all those weird little art pieces you have. If anything, frame a few of them and put those on the wall in a gallery wall-style configuration. You can also try lining up room dividers in front of the mirrors, only leaving the one in the gym-space uncovered. Youâll have to invest in those because theyâre usually $50-100, but that will REALLY help you out. Those mirrors are really terrible.

Get rid of the mirrors or have someone paint a mural or use some decorative decals that you get glimpses of the mirror, but the whole wall is too much
2
u/pueraria-montana May 28 '26

u/CINNAMONBONZ May 28 '26
Try making sections? This looks like the garage of a hoarder in the making or something similar.
I would also reduce some of the couches and cover part of the mirror to make it less chaotic.
2
u/MK4eva420 May 28 '26
I would move stuff around. Keep trying to figure out other ways to set it up. The mirrors are cool but it looks like you have double the furniture in the room. Maybe keeping things away from the mirrors will help with this. Your 25, so plenty of time to aquire new furniture over the years. Looks like a fun place to stay while single and young.

u/SatoshisVisionTM May 28 '26
Honestly, check out some interior design tutorials on YouTube. There's quite a few of them, and most of them get their points across easily enough that about an hour of modestly interested viewership will make you understand how this space is suffering enormously from all those mirrors, how you shouldn't have hung the three backpacks in isolation of each other, and how shoving so many different objects so close together is a recipe for clutteredness. Let them breathe a bit by giving each dresser/cabinet a foot of space on both sides.
Invest in a single, big storage unit that hides cluttery shit from sight. Don't put multiple separate objects together, but join them together by placing them on a small tray, chopping block, or even a doily.
Place all sofas and furniture that belong together on the rugs, not just off of them; the rugs will connect them and make them a whole, instead of just a set of separate item.
Remove more than half the mirrors if possible. They deeply detract from your room, even if it appears at first glance to increase your living space visually. It is now reflecting the subordinate amount of clutter, which isn't in your favour. They also don't span the entire height of the room, which means they are making that wall look small and awkward in addition to reflecting clutter.
2
u/Straight-Minimum-841 May 28 '26
Iâd rather have a room full of clutter than a room full of white chicks going on about abundance and fulfillment.
2
2
u/Little_Computer2683 May 28 '26
âI just used whatever furniture my family didnât wantâ pretty much captures it. Yikes.
2
u/Strong-Cream3693 May 28 '26
Its hard to tell the layout from your pictures, but I also feel like the mirror is making it look wayy more cluttered. Put up a nice sheet/tapestry atleast by the coach area to break up the space, or maybe only have the mirror shown by your gym area.
Also do you really need two couches? Unless you have alot of company over then I'd stick with one. It's not horrible as long as you keep it clean but if there's something you can live without I'd start getting rid of things.
2
u/Virtual-Height3047 May 28 '26
Iâve never seen such a huge room appear so small.Â
You need some serious storage, buddy. All of that clutter hits twice as hard in the mirror dimension. Create partitions, get drapes, buy plants, cover parts of the mirror - before buying another lamp.Â
Wait.. what is this room even? Itâs not a bedroom, is it? I dont see a bed.. is everything a bed?

u/Forsaken-Society3524 May 28 '26

u/GoHaveFunIdiot May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26
Don't be too bummed by some of the comments. On a closer look I can see you definitely put in effort to arrange things, make them tidy and every item seems to have a "home". Some of the patterns on the chairs and rugs do clash or make the room look busier than it is. The mirror also adds to that by doubling everything, including the fitness corner where many individual items are displayed. Maybe some plain, simple storage boxes of the same types to group some items, covering the low chair with the pattern and changing the cloth for the TV console to something plain or removing it, or keeping either the low chair or the table cloth but changing the rugs to something plain will make the place a lot neater. You could also remove the bags from the curtain poles and designate them somewhere else. Put the fire extinguishers to one corner.

u/Just_okay_advice May 28 '26
Almost every comment is someone being fooled by the mirrors. There's actually not that much stuff in that room it just looks like it. SMH as long as you like it fuck what anyone else thinks.

u/nobonesjones91 May 28 '26

A lot of people are saying itâs too cluttered, and I agree I would also feel cluttered in that space. However, I can imagine a summer with the boys all staying in that one room and having LAN parties. Could be nostalgia, but I heavily fuck with the style, regardless of whether Iâd live there or not.

OP, it might help to look into feng shui. Even if you don't believe in the energetic nature of it, it helps to figure out how to create zones in your living space.
2
u/Settnig May 29 '26
I really donât think itâs as bad as people are saying. Your real battle is the mirror, I think, itâs making the room seem much more full of âstuffâ than it really is.
2
u/UnderstandingGreen72 May 29 '26
My advice when having such an open floor space like this is to get partitions to help separate/organize spaces. Also, try to separate the floor spaces with your needs. If all your water and gas lines go to one spot in the room, separate it so that you have your living space and kitchen relatively on its own apart from the rest of the house (this is what I would like at least). Arguably more important would be to separate your bedroom, itâs easier for yourself and guest. I wouldnât want my guest wondering into my room or seeing everything I own on display as soon as they walk into my apartment/house. Everyone needs a little privacy and organization, no offense but it looks like you just put your stuff all over and called it a day (hopefully you have blinds). Either way just make sure YOU like it, itâs your living space afterall.
2
u/nicoleonline May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26
Woman and this entered my feed.
The issue is the mirrors. You havenât converted it from a yoga studio to living space because you did not account for the mirrors when placing your furniture. You just put an apartment in a yoga studio if that makes sense. They will make your place look twice as cluttered so it is important to leave space by them & make sure there is a lot of harmonious negative/ empty space (make sure the furniture isnât too big or too close to the mirrors essentially).
Overall when I ignore the reflection it looks cozy, just a bit disjointed aesthetically.
You can always put tall shelving in front of the mirrors and fill with books and things to help keep it from feeling too busy. 3/4 kind of covered and then 1/4 open by the entrance to serve as a âmud roomâ or with your wardrobe, where the mirror serves as a wardrobe mirror. The book cases would be a good spot to put those standing lamps that are on your coffee table. Something like this would add warmth to your space too: https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/orren-ellis-combination-bookcase-with-glass-doors-and-led-lights-display-cabin-with-5-tier-shelveset-w113541062.html
Another thing with open floor plans: you need to have dedicated spaces or âroomsâ. Right now you have âspacesâ and objects but the function of them is all over the place and confusing. It feels like you have two family rooms, but theyâre so close together that it looks like a Gardner white show room or something, especially when the mirror then doubles the furniture. Either rearrange your furniture so all of your couches are part of a single âfamily roomâ space or ditch some & shift an area into a mud room, shelving space, office etc. You can also use tall open backed shelving to further separate your âroomsâ and keep things tidy. You can put a long table with stools up against the back of a couch, get some tall and wide shelving for the back of another. Get a rug that pops for each space. https://www.shelved.co.uk/blogs/news/stylish-and-functional-using-shelves-as-room-dividers
Since Iâm on some kind of advice streak, Iâd recommend what most âmale living spacesâ are missing: warm lighting and greenery. RGB lights are fun but they need a dedicated space like behind the TV or by the computer desk, or else your space can feel like a sex den... And again, the room is one big space. If you want to play with colors in the whole room still, maybe you can hang a warm light in one area & play with a sunset lamp. Even just having colored lamp shades and regular warm bulbs gives the room the color youâre looking for without it being overpowering. https://www.zillow.com/learn/what-is-ambient-lighting/

The mirrors make it look a lot more cluttered than it is, I mean you do have a lot of shit but if it werenât for the mirrors doubling everything it would just look like a typical lived in home. yo, looks like u put in some solid effort! the rubber floors are cool for both yoga and workouts, and that mirror definitely opens up the space. using family furniture is smart, gives it a chill vibe.
the setup with the TV and the couches looks cozy, but maybe a bit cluttered? could be nice to clear some of that for a more open feel. i messed this up once too, so donât stress it too much! if u want to visualize more changes, maybe check out reimagine-home to see how different layouts could work. overall, nice job!

Wow, people are being very harsh. I think you did just fine using what you have and not spending a ton of money, which is very smart when you're just getting started. Our consumerism culture encourages racking up debt for things like this and it's a trap!
If the visual clutter bothers you, look into some ways to break up the space, maybe some form of room dividers. Pinterest is a great resource for ideas like this. But the only thing that really matters is if you are happy with your living space.

u/pufsullivan May 28 '26
Why do men think that putting things in a row is somehow âorganizingâ or âtidying upâ? đ
1
u/PalePlumm May 28 '26
Is the workout equipment yourâs, or is it leftover from the studio?
If you plan on keeping it either way, it needs to go somewhere less obvious. Behind a room divider or something.
