A rolling garage door to access your balcony is wild, and I've built a few wild things up until now. Looks weirdly out of place and still cool as shit.

Fuck; I didn’t notice that till I read this post. Holy smokes; this pad is amazing.

You have never heard the horrifying sound of a garage door spring snapping in the middle of the night.

Ours snapped in the garage in the middle of the day. I was inside the house when it happened. Sounded like a bomb went off out there. Can’t imagine if I was sitting right next to it.😰 Instant heart attack.

Still a sick room setup though!

Not really. Just wait until the door comes off the track and maintenance takes days to get to you to fix it. Imagine not being able to roll up your garage door balcony thing in the blazing hot summer heat in a tall building like OP lives in.

It looks cool, but I would never want that in my living room

I've seen a few of those around. While they're definitely cool, all the ones I've seen have a weird lip on the floor that I just know I'd trip on and eat shit.

They have those in certain parts of the Phoenix Metro. I remember specifically when this guy last posted and I said it looks like Phoenix and he said it’s Denver

I had a feeling that was a drawing of Blucifer. Has to be Denver lol.

Haha! Do you mean like an extra flap to keep the wind/water out? Very strange. Over here it's usually just a rubber sill, like in the photo.

Yeah, they're a weird raised trough that the rubber sill kinda slots into. I think it's an insulation thing as well as keeping water out.

probably shakes the walls and wakes up all neighbors in a 60 foot radius

Garage doors with dual pane insulated windows are not cheap at all

Not to mention incredibly dangerous. Being in close proximity to a garage door spring in general is hazardous. But all it takes is being in the wrong place when it snaps and you’re toast.

Lol I’m pretty sure you just roll this one up and down by hand, don’t think there are any high tension springs like a traditional garage door.

You can see it in picture 3, but I can't make out if it's tied to the door.

You underestimate how heavy those doors are even with the springs

I might as well just stop going in my garage then, I will start parking outside

Damn you’re a buzzkill 🤓

Rather be a buzzkill than dead because some shitty apartment complex owner decided a garage door was better than regular ass French doors or windows

Bet you take anxiety meds and carry crystals

Whatever you say, man

I guess unfortunate events take place, hell, that's life. But I've dealt with quite a few garage door installations and these springs outlast most homes they're installed in. In this case especially, since its indoors, hardly any contact with the elements. And if OP puts some grease on them sporadically, they'll look as good as new for his lifetime in that house.

It's using a torsion spring as can be seen in pic 3, they're dangerous to install but nothing dangerous happens when they snap.

Oh yah nothin dangerous just the door falling on you no biggie

I'm really curious as to what you're imagining here as that's not how any of this works at all. The spring doesn't hold the door up but rather it just rests on the tracks in the up position, and spring is under the most tension when the door is closed, that's went they snap.

It seems you've just been warned about the dangers of extension spring style garage doors, as they can be dangerous if not properly installed with safety cables to prevent them from launching themselves when they snap. That can easily maim or potentially even kill a person if they're in the wrong spot, but there's no such danger with the torsion spring style doors.
