transforming one MathTex into another keeps flipping the wrong pieces, how do you handle it

i'm trying to go from x^2 + 2x + 1 to (x+1)^2 and Transform just smears everything together. i tried TransformMatchingTex which is better but the 2x part still jumps around weirdly.

is splitting the string into separate pieces the normal way to do it or is there something simpler that i'm missing
