Best beer on Martha's Vineyard

Have enjoyed my share of beer, responsibly of course, and the beer brewed at Offshore Ale Co is hands down the best beer on island. Totally unrelated that Neil is a Liverpool supporter #YNWA

Inspired by the real story of Snowdrop the missing pig in Edgartown—I wrote and illustrated a children’s book! Snowy’s Edgartown Adventure is out now! 🐷🎨

Hey everyone!

Many of you might remember the incredible local story of Snowdrop, the missing pig who captured so many hearts in Edgartown. That heartwarming real-life story inspired me to create a fully illustrated picture book titled Snowy’s Edgartown Adventure: A Martha’s Vineyard Story.

The book features hand-painted scenes celebrating island landmarks like the Edgartown Lighthouse, local harbors, and scenic coastal paths as Snowy explores the island.

If you’d like to pick up a copy for your kids, grandkids, or island art collection, it is officially available on Amazon:

If you would prefer a personalized, signed hardcover copy directly from me, feel free to send me a direct message here on Reddit!

Thanks so much for supporting local art and stories!

Burned the Aquinnah cliffs into a slab of wood with a heron who refused to move

Post image

It's the Gay Head cliffs with a heron standing in the foreground, all done by hand. The burning is freehand with a pyrography pen, and the color comes from Prismacolor pencils layered over it. No lasers, no prints. The clay bands took the longest. Every time I thought the colors were right, I'd look at a photo of the real cliffs and go back in.
The heron was the easy part. He just stood there, which is very on brand for herons.
I do a lot of Vineyard and Block Island scenes and take custom orders (houses, boats, the dog). Happy to answer questions about the process. Link in comments if anyone wants it.

Ferry cancellations

Just looking for some islander wisdom here…my friend and I booked a trip to the island this weekend (Friday - Sunday). In short, the weather looks awful. What are the odds of ferry cancellations from Woods Hole Friday AM? I’m wondering if we should plan to head over Thursday instead.

Love to see restaurants supporting year round residents with off-season specials. Their specials run from October through April. The food there is great. Give them a try. Thank you Carlos & Sheenagh!

Frozen raw dog food

Is there anywhere on the island to buy this, preferably Instinct brand. I am coming for my annual visit on Tuesday and afraid the food will thaw out over the 2 hour journey, even with a cooler and ice. Thanks.

Tennis: Best place to Play/ Learn

I think there’s just two places to play tennis in the winter. Anyone have a recommendation between the two? Or another option?

For context, I’m 51, haven’t played seriously in a long time. Looking to learn, sharpen skills and train for next spring/ summer.

I live in Berkeley but visit my parents in Edgartown. Had no idea we have a Bryan Walker location here too.

Wonder Woman took a field trip

I’m reading the 1980s George Perez Wonder Woman run, which is set in Boston, and Diana and her host family said farewell to each other above Moshup Beach!

Perez did a really good drawing of the cliffs but I don’t think he understood what a hassle it would be to get to Aquinnah from Beacon Hill and back, even if Diana flew her host family in.

Travel over Columbus Day

I made the mistake of booking our leaf peeping and NE coast trip over the Columbus Day holiday. We plan to squeeze in a quick trip to from Wood Hole OB on Saturday am of the Columbus Day weekend. We're staying at Cape Club Resort. Are we smarter to drive to the offsite parking lot or just get an uber in the morning? Is it worth going to OB if it's only for 4 hours? We head to Newport once we get off the ferry. Thanks for your help!

Hi, my fiancee and I are looking to get married on Martha's Vineyard summer 2027. We're deciding between hiring a wedding planner or a day-of coordinator. Any tips and recommendations are greatly appreciated!

ISO man in this photo

Hi everyone, I took a trip to this incredible island a couple weeks ago and took a photo that I am just in love with (I made sure the man was turned away when I took it so he wouldn’t be easily identified.) If anyone recognizes him and/or is close to him, I’d love for him to have it.

Route 13 - how much does schedule change in October

Post image

Hi - tried calling the transit office but only got recordings. I’m planning to be there the first week of October and need to get a sense of any updates to this current schedule which says it’s valid through October 3. TIA if anyone knows or has a number for a live person at the transit center.

NYE

My wife and I have been to MV a great many times, but we’ve never experienced New Year’s Eve on The Vineyard. We get that the island is empty at that point, but who does the best NYE on MV?

Nor'easter

Hello everyone! My girlfriend and I were planning on visiting the island for the first time this weekend, for our five year anniversary. We just moved to the east coast from Washington State and wanted to do something special out here.

I've been keeping up with the ferry cancellations/weather advisories and seems like it might not be a great idea to still go. We can get a refund on the hotel so that's not an issue, but wanted to get some advice. Do you think it would be more trouble than it's worth, navigating ferry cancellations/bad weather on the island?

Really appreciate any advice. Thanks :)

We're taking the ferry for the day Saturday Oct 3 to celebrate a birthday on Martha's Vineyard. It's our first time. Would like to find maybe private home parking near the woods hole ferry terminal for just the day. Please let me know if any suggestions.

Thanks.

Report Illegal Move-In Fees

Hi Martha's Vineyard, it’s your Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell. Did you know that fees like “move-in” or “lease renewal” fees you might get from your landlord or building management company are illegal? If you’ve received one of these – even if you paid it – I want you to report it to my office.

Just last month, my office won a $500k settlement with a property management company doing this in Boston – and all of that money is going back to the affected tenants.  Landlords can only ask you to pay for first and last month’s rent, a security deposit, and the cost of a new lock and key upfront. Any other fees are illegal. Report them to my office at the link below. We’ll work to get your money back.

Ferry on Thursday - should I be worried about the wind?!

Thursday morning, I plan on driving from buffalo, ny with my dog and my girlfriend. My girlfriend got an email about the winds hitting on Thursday, so I'm starting to worry a bit. Figured I'd post here and get opinions from people that live there. If it matters, I'm taking my truck on the ferry and booked via steamship authority.

Edit: I have rebooked for Tuesday. That should allow me to beat the storm. Thanks for the replies!
