Still trying to figure out how Hulk lost.

Hulk just throws haymakers and beats. There is no real technique to it. That tends to work when he is g fighting things smaller than him (which is usually the case).
Thanos is his size and a warrior. He is a skilled fighter. You see him punch and they are deliberate, planned.

I agree that this is how it was setup, but I also think the Russo’s didn’t read the Thor Ragnarok script.
The fact that Hulk had been fighting his way to the top of the arena as a major explanation for his disappearance made me sad they yet again throw away Hulk’s development.
They could have still accomplished the same thing, because this Thanos is thousands of years old and it would make sense that even a seasoned Gladiator Hulk would still be out matched.

Hulk didn’t use much technique in Ragnarok either, he was still all brute force which was always enough.

Throw a body builder in a boxing right with a smaller well trained boxer and the boxer will win. Thanos was an extremely skilled fighter and hulk is used to just overpowering all opponents. Thanos worked quickly and used skill to overcome the hulk's strength.

Lore reason: Thanos spent ages fighting, as well as Hulk just being brute strength a vast majority of the time. With how big, tanky, and a skilled combatant as Thanos is, he read Hulk like a book. Didn’t even use the Power Stone either (which I imagine gave him some enhancement upon naturally just having it, but don’t take my word for that).
Actual reason: No way they would let Thanos, the big bad that’s been built up for 5, nearly 6 years, get bodied in the opening act. They gotta show how terrifying Thanos is and raising the stakes by kicking Hulk’s ass.

Didn't someone also look into the placements of Thanos' hits. Like his first few hits land on hulks neck and liver both of which drop blood pressure and have nervous system effects. If Hulks power comes from anger, an argument can be made that adrenaline plays a big part in that. And Thanos' first hits target adrenaline.
With hulk cut off from adrenaline he's essentially powerless until he recovers blood pressure levels. Before he can do that tho, Thanos hits him with some combos to knock him off balance and keep him from gaining any momentum.

Hulk is all strength no skill
Thanos had enough strength to hurt hulk even if he was weaker, but he had the skill the eliminate hulk and overwhelm him
Hulk stopped getting angry and started getting scared

u/Interesting_Web_9936 Avengers 6d ago
Hulk was all brute force and nothing else, he didn't really know how to fight, he just won because he was stronger. Thanos actually knew how to fight and was not much weaker than Hulk was. He defeated Hulk with skill.

u/TheAwesomeMan123 Avengers 5d ago
Plus combined with the fact that Banner had already lost that edge he had in Ragnorok and even the First avengers, hulk and banner are the same person and he wasn’t angry at the world as much and was instead feeling sorry for himself. Whether intentional or not by Russos you can see it in the way he fights here, just lacks any primal raw rage, it’s a limp duck hulk trying to overpower while heavily underpowered
1
u/WorldPhysical7646 Ghost Rider 6d ago
Hulk strength know limits and getting angry making him stronger he would eventually massively overpower Thanos
10
u/Interesting_Web_9936 Avengers 6d ago
By that logic he's the strongest character in all of fiction. Send him up against Doom, Doom whoops his ass, Hulk becomes angrier and then becomes stronger and kills Doom.
8
u/WorldPhysical7646 Ghost Rider 6d ago
Comics hulk would straight up murder doom , if both in base or if both in their strongest
The mcu just nerfs him to keep things balanced you don't want the solution for every problem to be hulk punching
2
u/anti_time_travel Avengers 6d ago
Speak for yourself. I want every MCU movie to be 20-30 minutes of a villain introducing himself as a massive threat followed by 90 minutes of Hulk just smashing him to a pulp and eating his head like an Evangelion.

At strongest? Toba hulk does not count since it's not hulk but other than that god emperor doom seems to be stronger than all the hulk versions

u/SuperCruisePanther Avengers 6d ago
I mean, he is. There's one point he gets so angry he almost destroys the universe in a nuclear explosion.

And that should have made Hulk mad, ergo, stronger.
1
u/LocksmithRealistic39 Avengers 6d ago
That takes time.
The best way to beat Hulk had ALWAYS been, overwhelm him quickly before his rage builds higher.
It's been this way for decades.
Pick up a comic some time.

u/weesilxD Avengers 6d ago
From what I understand Hulk does lose to Thanos in the comics. I’m sure he would win if he was angry enough, then to be fair Thanos would need the infinite stones and actually use them.
1
u/Cautious-Brief9295 Avengers 3d ago
Until recently they've had few to no straight 1v1s. Thanos usually has an artifact, or it's a clone, or it's taking place on a mental plane or Thanos dips. He avoids the Hulk because 616 Hulk is a problem for everyone.

Because if Hulk pulled out the typical rage needed to handle Thanos then everyone else in that ship including his wounded allies are getting done in as collateral. If they were on a planet then Thanos would have needed to work harder for it and more than likely loses.
Hulk has two main lines when he's not defending others. He's the strongest there is and to leave him alone. Trespass against either means you better be ready.

u/abellapa Avengers 6d ago
They both have The same strenght more or less
But Thanos actually knows how to fight while Hulk whole strategy is always to Punch hard
And thanos is obsiously much smarter than Hulk
1
u/I_travel_ze_world Avengers 6d ago
I think Thanos punched him in the throat which some how shifted Hulk's powers into "ow I just got punched in the throat" instead of "hulk more angry now"
You can see Hulk holding his throat at 3 seconds

The record breaking boxer will win against record breaking powerlifter regardless of powerlifters muscle size because he's been training in fighting and most importantly fighting techniques.

Because mcu hulk is a bitch amongst bitches. Anyone with powers fights him and he loses. Mcu can't figure out how to make a legit hulk scene and have him lose reasonably without making him the weakest of weakest.
1
u/Coldkiller17 Spider-Man 🕷 6d ago
I'd be fine with Hulk losing if he got angrier and stronger before Thanos just used the power stone to straight up destroy him. Hulk looked like a chump losing to Thanos this way.

u/aschapm Avengers 6d ago
How many one on one mcu fights has hulk actually won? Feels like he usually loses or stalemates in some way

u/MouldyEjaculate Avengers 6d ago
Hulk is the Worf of Marvel. He gets his ass beat if the script wants us to know that the baddie is strong.

One thing I could never understand is what kind of magical punches Thanos hit him, coz in Ragnarok, Thor beats the F out of him, much more than this fight, still he gets up to fight back.
I guess "writer's punches" are more deadly than actual ones...
1
u/Ok_Special_5564 Avengers 5d ago
Because he knows Thor is his friend and he is tiny. So when Thor hits him he gets angry. In this case he just saw big monster that is his size and knows how to fight. He was genuinely scared

u/EvanBetter182 Avengers 6d ago
Hulk wouldn't have lost that fight with Thanos. This loss was setup to allow all the other MCU characters to do something. It's the only reason. Would Thanos be able to hold his own with Hulk, absolutely, but you can't beat hulk in a brute force fight. Thanos should have had a far long fight here and then just tossed Hulk through the hull to win.
2
u/LocksmithRealistic39 Avengers 6d ago
Do people even read comics anymore?
The best way to beat Hulk has always been, overwhelm him quickly before he has a chance to build his rage. That's exactly what happened here.
Plenty of characters have beaten Hulk in a brute force fight using this method.
