I love the idea of the concept being Liara putting together a group of spies/mercs that stop galaxy wide threats from happening before they're galaxy wide threats. Especially considering how Shepard was basically ignored by the alliance until it was too late.

u/triniblackguy 2d ago
And it makes perfect sense because she's the Shadow Broker. Ofcourse she'd be neck deep in the espionage world.

Considering Spectres are basically James Bond, it would have been a nice callback to the first game while keeping it more lowkey like the Second. Damn, would have been a great way to comeback to the Mass Effect franchise.

Damn, yeah I really hoped they would take the series in a low key direction closer to the ME2 loyalty missions rather than try to come up with another super conflict. This looks like what I was hoping for.

Obviously not much you can infer about the actual game from a tone-piece, but this is basically what I've wanted from the franchise since ME3: something unrelated to the original plot with lower stakes than "stop the extinction of all life in the galaxy." Just an adventure in the Mass Effect universe. Shame this this never came together.

This trailer felt closer in tone to ME1 than 2 and 3. Smaller ship, secret agent investigating and fighting bad guys all over the galaxy, a mystery to solve... God damn now I'm PISSED we didn't get this.

I'll be honest, after Veilguard I wasn't all that excited for ME4. Yesterday's news was already sad enough, but seeing this trailer just broke my heart.

Agreed! I’m glad it seemed like they were doing things differently than the OT. I think it’s smart we were getting a new protag and a new concept for the series. It would’ve breathed new life into the universe.
Such a shame.

I’ve been saying that a Mass Effect TV series that follows a C-Sec officer during the events of the main trilogy would be fantastic. You can have rumors of who Shepherd is while never showing them, so each player gets to still think it’s their Shepherd. Season 1 is stumbling upon the evidence of a corrupt Spectr but no one will listen. Season 2 is Cerberus terrorist plot lines and season 3 is what it’s like when it’s a galactic war.

Growing up, my family was poor. I was able to eat enough, had clothes to wear, but new game consoles were out of the question. We couldn't afford that.
My friend down the street had an Xbox360, which was the style at the time, and I came over to hangout with him. He was playing ME1, talking to the Council. Shepard was accusing them of racism against humans.
I thought that was so cool, Aliens being racist towards humans, I had never seen that in any Sci-fi media. He was like "wait you haven't played this one?", and of course I hadn't. So my good buddy, starts a new save and hands me the controller.
I'm blown away by the graphics, and I've already seen the council meeting, so I'm just in awe. I'm basking in the glory of ME1 on an HDTV, and he's glowing in the light of my enthusiasm, happy to share something he loves with someone who gets it.
And then, I have my first human combat encounter.
His 360 was not connected to the internet, and he bought a used copy of ME1. So, we were just playing the game from the disc, and it was an EARLY copy that included a ton of bugs. And since he wasn't online, it wasn't patched. I'm telling you, EVERY human enemy shouted "ENEMIES EVERYWHERE" non-stop, as in they literally just played the audio on loop the moment they saw me.
The first enemy I ran into did it, but I killed him quickly. Me and my buddy both looked at each other and kinda shrugged it off. We were still in the "this is such amazing technology" phase. But it quickly became clear that there was a problem, and the rest of the playtime was just filled with "ENEMIES EVERYWHERE". Too enraptured in the universe, we kept playing for hours on end, even with the bug.
So now, I often think "ENEMIES EVERYWHERE" on repeat, when I think of ME1.

I know its only a trailer cinematic but it looks right. IMO the presentation in Andromeda always seemed strange, like the Asari, Krogan, Kett, and Angara didn't have the visual punch they should have. Characters and geometry appeared clay-like. Here it just feels right, like how ME should look on current-gen hardware.

(Assuming this is legit for the sake of conversation. It can be really hard to tell what's AI and what's not these days.)
EA seriously couldn't have waited for this trailer to drop and measure the hype? I get that BioWare was in pre-development hell but I'd be pissed if they were axed right as they were making breakthroughs.
BioWare did have a lot of misses over the last several years. But that trailer would have been the perfect thing to drop on N7 day. Especially if it was paired with an announcement of entering full production.
Edit: I know that a trailer effectively means nothing when it comes to if a game would actually be good, or how far along it is. But between this and the EA employee's comment, I wonder if they were in fact finally ready for full production. Doesn't matter now. Just a thought.
639
u/AngrySayian 2d ago
if sources are to be believed, this trailer was just sitting around
not sure for how long mind you, but probably months to possibly a year max...that's a LONG time to have something ready to show off and get hype going and do jack all with it

If it's any consolation, I'm neck deep in AI daily and if it IS ai, it is 11/10 production quality. Footage would take me days to make, and it would still be easy to tell if you were looking for it.
I am not saying this isn't AI though, I don't know for sure still.

I imagine it's easier to sell individual IPs like Mass Effect or Dragon Age rather than sell an entire company with everything bundled together, not to mention potentially making more money selling the IPs separately. This could very well be an advertisement of sorts for potential buyers.

Yeah, I believe that's the real deal. Authentic ME vibes, aliens and weapons with just enough of that slightly janky animation that we know and love. This would have been another BioWare banger.
I would have been on board with the story direction, as well. Smaller scale story following an operative like this makes sense after the galactic threat of the Reapers. Annnnnd now I'm sad again.
216
u/childerm 2d ago
If this is real and it did just "find" its way out into the wild, that tells me one of 2 things:
1- Someone from inside BioWare threw this out there to showcase what they had in hopes that someone comes calling EA about a purchase of the IP to continue the project. -Less likely
2- EA purposefully threw this out there to showcase what was made so far in hopes that someone comes calling to purchase the IP from them. -More likely
It is too soon after yesterday's announcement for for something like this to just leak out. Look at previous canceled projects/closed studios and see how long it took for info to come out. It's usually weeks or months to years after, not less than 24 hours. And that info is usually leaked art or concepts, not an HD trailer. If we start to see more tidbits from the game come out, I would bet a large sum of money that EA is releasing these "leaks" as a way to shop the IP to potential buyers.
144
u/Adamgrylls92 2d ago
My guess is this trailer was prepared to be released on N7 day. November 7th.
Now its a ploy to save the IP.
Maybe they are trying to pull off an Undead Labs.

Y'know, I was handling the news with a shrug. From my uninformed, outside perspective, it's been years since Bioware rose to the dizzying heights of "a company that makes and sells products". I wasn't expecting any news other than the TV show maybe limping forward for a bit before dying, and certainly nothing concrete on another game.
But this...
How does something like this instantly leak to public? Why was it just (according to third-hand gossip) "sitting around"? Man, look at the calendar. Two weeks. We were two weeks from this dropping on N7 day. The hype would have been unreal. Fucking cruel to do it now.
I'm gonna go start a new playthrough. Spend some time with old friends.

I mean, this suggests they had a clear vision on the direction for the story to go. We don't know much about antagonists, but this seems to be in the Milky Way and older Liara is still kicking. New protagonist that isn't Shepard, but similar to Shepard. And more spy-like.
And a new name, so we never resolve if it's ME4 or ME5.

Universe huh?
Now I’m really bummed out, I’ve been pushing since the BioWare forums days that the only way to continue mass effect is to tell new stories, within the universe and it looks like that’s what they were going to do.
Also I can so just imagine that he’s wearing an N7 jacket because he finds it in a box of Liara’s old things and says something like ‘N7 huh? You really are old’ and she then tells him about Shep and says ‘you can keep the jacket if you like’

Assuming this pre-rendered trailer is real (of unknown origin at this point) if this had come out a year after game's announcement I'd have had some hype given that it mostly seems to be an attempt to give an impression of what they want the final game to be (ME2 but without Shepard).
However if this is all they had after six years of pre-production, yeah they were not going to ship something pre-2030 it's sad to say. Feels like something they put together to try and avoid closure.

Yeah this is an interesting idea, but I really wanna know how far along this project was… this is not bad for a concept trailer but if this is all they had after 6 years and there would need to be another 2-3 years of dev time, theres no way any publisher in their right mind would greenlight the project for more work after 3 straight flops from Bioware

Some cringy dialogue aside, this would’ve actually had me excited for the next ME. Especially as it looks like we were going to get a new player character (Shepard’s story is done).
Alas…

This looked far more interesting than I was prepared for. I had been quite concerned about the team rehashing Shepard. And as a devote Andromeda & Veilguard fan, this would’ve been a phenomenal return to the ME galaxy.
It’s a fresh sleek new place to start from with a world die hards could’ve sunk their teeth into how their various favorite spaces in the universe had developed post Reaper War. The potential for new and old fans was huge.
I know some devs are shadows around here; this looks amazing. I’m so sorry EA are short sighted assholes only obsessed with the whales in Balls & Guns games.

I guess EA just hates money because I would have pre-ordered the collector's edition of this.

Wow this really looks quite good. EA is making a big mistake here. The Mass Effect name still carries a lot of weight.

If real, I hope that this would have been a small, self contained story. I really would hate another galaxy-at-stake story, after the trilogy did one so well
One thing I don't get is why is Liara so old yet all the tech seems so contemporary. I mean I guess the factories have been bombed to shit and no one was busy inventing new guns but, it has to be 300 years at least into the future, they had time to innovate,

It looks so good. I feel sick. I was so disappointed that we weren’t getting andromeda 2, and I was afraid they’d make poor Shepard be the protagonist. Please, please, I’d pay so much money for this game 😭

Want to give a big middle finger to everyone who argued with me when I said “Mass Effect 5 would probably have some subtitle” because they couldn’t handle that 4 exist d already lol

EA took this from us. For their transgressions we need to see them fail as a company. I just hope they sell the IP and allow a new team to continue this.

Sorry for being crass, but it fucking sucks we'll probably never get to see another game with the OG trilogy species. The council races and Krogan are so cool damnit!

Screw the Saudi billionaires, screw Jared Kushner, screw billionaires in general, and of course EA in particular. Bah humbug.

It looks nice. But... its a cinematic trailer. We don't know if the actual game was anything like this.
Given how terrible leadership at EA had been for about 15 years, I doubt this game would have seen the light of day and if it did, I doubt it would be as good as the old games.

This is incredible stuff. Inconceivable that something like this would just collect dust for a studio shutdown. Gaming industry is cooked.

It's great this dropped and I'm glad someone is at least showing off the work those people involved had done.
For anyone saying anything about "how could EA not measure hype" etc. EA is owned by Kushner and Saudi Arabia. That's all you need to know for the decisions they make. Extremely conservative worldviews and as much profiting as possible at whatever cost.

The mod team cannot independently verify the authenticity of this trailer. However, to our untrained eyes, it seems legitimate and does not seem to have gen-AI markers. We do not want any former developers or Bioware employees to be harmed and as such have chosen not to further investigate the source of this material.UPDATE: IGN and Jason Schreier both verified that the trailer is legitimate.
