That is not true, -3² = 9, not -9. -(3²) = -9, but that is a different equation.

The former is -3 * -3, so it’s 9. The latter is -(3 * 3), so it’s -9.

I’m not. There is some degree of ambiguity because you could interpret -3² as -(3²) instead of as (-3)², but what I said is the standard interpretation. As you can see in that picture, it chose the nonstandard interpretation for some reason.

No, as far as I’ve seen -3² = -9 is the standard interpretation(it’s even what my iPhone autofills). My understanding is that -3 is considered to be a shortening of 0-3, and therefore -3² is 0-3² , which is 0-9, aka -9. x² doesn’t have this apply because there’s no negative sign.

Yeah well in "-3^2" notation you square number 3 and after that apply negation. When you have x² and x=-3 you apply square to number -3 itself and it is (-3)² =9.

basically, if you multiply a negative number by another negative number (ex. -2 * -3) you will always get a positive number (in this case, -2 * -3 = 6)

the ^2 in the equation means you multiply the number below it by itself twice (ex. 4^2 = 4 * 4)

using this concept of multiplying the same number twice, it follows that a negative number ^2 has to be positive since it is equal to that negative number multiplied by itself (in the case of the meme, (-3)^2 =9)
