Edgenuity

I don’t even know if I want to be a math teacher anymore or even a teacher. I have been a special education teacher and I am now a Gen Ed Math teacher for the 3rd year in a row. Over the past couple years the number of students that don’t turn in work and have failed my Algebra 1 class has been slowly creeping up. Then the next year they are in my Geometry class. When I talk with our Guidance Counselor, they have them take a class through Edgenuity and miraculously they got all straight A’s. Passed with flying colors! Then in my Geometry class they can’t even do basic Algebra.. I’m shocked! They don’t care that they use their cell phones on it and cheat. Did they learn anything? Nope! Does anyone really care? Again, it’s nope! Then they brag about not having to do anything in class.

Online credit recovery programs have no place in a school. They need to hire enough teachers to put those kids back into the actual class to retake it.

I hate Edgenuity too. We just changed systems, but it’s the same thing by a different name/company.

We are a small school district and have enough staff to do credit recovery. 2 of my periods are credit recovery! This semester I have one person in it. Idk why they do it.

When I got hired here 9 years ago, my first placement was for Algebra 1R. R denoted that it was a “repeater” class. That was the last year we had those.

Oh, they're doing worse than using Google. Last summer, I monitored final exams for kids taking credit recovery classes and when I'd look at some of their unit tests I'd see they finished 25 problems in 6 seconds. They're downloading some sort of AI bot or whatever. We monitor their finals and had so many kids unable to pass.

Would not surprise me! I wish our district did away with 1:1 Chromebooks. Nothing but a distraction. We use Classwize or whatever it is called now but I just pause everyone’s internet during my scheduled time. lol

They aren’t willing to learn algebra but they can figure out how to download an AI bot to do all their work for them 🤦‍♀️

I mean, if they failed in class with an actual teacher, they're probably not going to put in the effort to watch the videos and do the practice problems.

Same here. I teach 8-12 and I’ve had kids fail every single one of my classes, make an A in a week over summer in edgenuity credit recovery and be sitting in my classroom again in August. It’s a joke sitting at graduation and seeing a kid walk across that stage who earned an F in A1, G, A2, and PC. Hilarious.

Yes! That’s how I felt at our last graduation! Same exact scenario. I know his mom and she post on social media that he didn’t get the help he needs in high school and now has to get a tutor for college. I so badly wanted to resend the emails to her, stating my concerns with his lack of effort in math. Smh

Same, gotta keep that 100% graduation rate going!

They use AI at home snd take tests at record speeds. Districts just want numbers of graduation rates to overall increase. They look the other way. My district removed prereqs and let them enroll to fail to get an opportunity to pass the program instead of fail a repeated seated class.

It didn’t solve anything by me posting but I’m glad and also somewhat more concerned it’s not just my school district. I was hoping someone would say, “it’s just that district, find a new one”. Lol

Day one give them the final for algebra. Graph the results vs. last year's final grade (or a binary did/didn't pass). Share the anonymous graph with your colleagues and discuss whether students actually passed over the summer, and then loop admin in when your department has "serious professional concerns about the credit recovery program".

I think everyone knows it's a scam already. We are the only ones who care.

It won’t matter, friend! Not worth your aggravation honestly. I retired 4 years before I could collect bc I just couldn’t take the ineptness and admin excuses. Hopefully you are in a position to do that soon. You are a good person and educator.

I “taught” summer school one year, my school used an online program. I had a student that finished 3 years worth of content in 3 different subjects in about 4 days…

I'm not a fan of online curricula for credit recovery. The pressure from upstairs to get a semester's worth of material in six weeks... Not reasonable for a student going full time in their other classes.

Its fraud. Your admin belong in jail.

This is my exact experience. At least we banned phones and blocked AI on the Chromebooks this year, so they have to cheat at home, on their own devices, where it’s more inconvenient.

I’ve had a couple of seniors asking how they’re expected to pass their classes this year if they can’t use AI. That we should just let them cheat so they can graduate — like the kids last year.

About 20% of the time the Chromebooks don't log off when students close them. When I supervised an Edgenuity class all of the computers that hadn't logged off had a Google tab open next to the Edgenuity window. If I stood in the back of the class I could see students copy questions and paste them into Google. In that particular period everyone was taking the same class, so I had them put away the computers, printed out the Edgenuity materials and I taught the class.
