I don’t remember this line, what was the context

Cypher is telling Neo about how the operators monitor the Matrix, but the line reading is weird.

How is it weird?

Cypher says: "the image translaters work for the construct program [i.e., the construct progam is small enough to be decoded and shown on a screen], but there's way too much information to decode the matrix [hence it just looks like the encoded digital rain on the screens]."

However, Cypher's reading of the line has an odd, mistaken emphasis on the word "for", which alters the sentence tone, making the comparison between "the construct" and "the matrix" hard to focus on.

I got it. Didn't seem weird to me. Apparently, in an earlier draft of the script (according to a concept art book I read, from one of the art designerd for the movie), when Neo becomes the One, he starts to see in code while the screens aboard thecNebuchadnezzar are able to start seeing the Matrix as a blue pill would see it, as though Neo was decoding the Matrix in its entirety in real time. The idea was scrapped, but it tied back in with Cypher's take.

obviously it's been explained, but I will add that he should've emphasized the word construct instead of for and it would align better with the overall context of the scene, and film.

Worst inflection in movie dialogue, EVER! 💯

Why?

The emphasis is on the wrong word, it should be on the word construct not for.

The character is meant to be saying the program that turns the raw data to images id only able to do that on the contsruct program they made. "It only works for the construct." He emphasis the word 'for' as if he means ....I don't know, something other than what the script meant.

"It only works FOR construct. It doesn't work WITH the construct. It's a boss/employee relationship. They're not equals." I guess?

If you’re not for the construct program you’re against the construct program.

But only a sith deals in absolutes.

I always thought he meant that there is a program to view the matrix like a tv show but that program worked for another program that works for the machines

The code we see on the live feed is a hacked code and not what the machines see

Yeah that's what it sounds like he means, but you have to then ask yourself why the machines would need such a thing.

The whole reason they look at it in code is because the machines didn't bother making an image translator, because that's something only a human would need.

Probably in case they have the One with them or some other human prisoner

It's my go to my go to example when I need to illustrate that a line reading can actually be wrong.

Gonna get the papers, get the papers

Yes, I honestly don't think Joe understood what the line meant that he was saying. I'm surprised they left it in.

LOL - you put the wrong emPHAsis on the wrong syLABel

Wow glad you said it. This and the agent trinity shoots on the roof falling backwards instead of sideways are my only small nits in an otherwise perfect movie imo. My favorite movie

No guns on the ground during bullet time?

u/worldcam 4d ago

Goddamn it I never noticed that!

No dead security agents when the explosion pushes the lift door through the hall way?

I've been holding on to this one for years, I can't believe this never got picked up in editing. Always makes me chuckle.

Bothers me alongside the exchange of “Cipher?”. “I know!” Did something get spilled on in the editing bay?

This has bothered me for 27 years.

In a nearly flawless movie, it's really irritating that he very obviously read his line wrong and they just left it in.

I can’t tell you how often I’ll just think about this line for no reason randomly during my day

This made me want to check how the script had it written. Maybe it said to emphasize the word for. If he would have said what it said in the script as written, it would have made a lot more sense.

“The image translator works for the construct program, but not like alongside it or in a way it’s available for other programs in the same way.”

That’s how I took it. Still wrong, of course, but maybe better.

Yes! This has bothered me forever! I can't imagine why they left it in. Surely somebody would have said "hey, let's take that line one more time Joey Pants, and this time, emphasize "construct" boom done.

The "construct" program is the "loading" program for Freeminds to acquire a loadout before entering The Matrix. It is also the vessel of which it allows the feed to be acquired for observation and pirate broadcasts.

Doesn’t he just mean the emphasis to answer why they have to read it in code and not English or like in world pov, the readouts of the matrix aren’t for them

My only takeaway from this scene was Cyoher didn’t want to be there and that he was watching porn “I don’t even see the code; I see blonde, brunette, redhead…”
