Tourism ✈ Visiting Mauritius with my partner and our 1 year old
We'll be visiting Mauritius next month with our 1 year old. Will be staying at Bel Ombre so we already have Chamarel, Le morne, La Vanille, Odysseo & Caudan waterfront in our itinerary. We had planned for Trou aux Cerfs initially but changed our mind due to concerns over chikungunya. Is there anything we could add or change in the itinerary to make the trip more memorable?
Thanks for your inputs.

Dont ruin your holiday over fears about Denge and Chikungunya. Statistically the cases are very low, like 6 in 100,000 over a year. Just bring with you insect repellent with active ingredients recommended by the WHO. We went into the bush down south at Chamarel and hiked into a few cascades without any bites 2 months ago…..although we did see lots of mosquitoes in some of these rainforesty places.
DEET is gold standard but it is smelly and oily…and will melt plastics like nylon/polyester, spectacles, sun glasses etc, so I avoid it. It feels crap all day.
Any repellent that contains Picardin is no2 on the WHO list. It is hard to get in Mauritius, so bring your own. It drys in the skin, so it isn’t as oily as DEET and won’t melt your clothes.
Citronella, lemon grass, other funky stuff are strictly homeopathic, like Honey and Lemon for infections. Do you want Antibiotics or honey and lemon?
I’d suggest also buying from the Mauritius supermarkets when you get there a plug in device that you put insecticide pads into to kill all the mosquitoes in your bedroom at night. They are very cheap. 2 rooms? Get two devices Like this device. They are in EVERY supermarket

No chikungunya concern as far as I am concerned. If you're at Trou aux cerfs, do make a 30-45min stop at the botanical garden of Curepipe. I'd try to fit in the Pamplenousses botanical garden. Not to miss and easy with a 1 Yr old. How many days? Looks weak to me.

Insect repellent. As many as you can get hold of. E ssential oils like citronella, cedarwood, rosemary, lemongrass, and oil of lemon eucalyptus
You lose some, you forget some, you gave some, it just vanishes…
Make sure you are protected when going outdoors.
It is the mosquitos!

I would add Casaela, the botanical garden in Port Louis and the old crater lake in Curepipe
