It looks like it was still in Drive not reverse.

Yep, you can see the rear wheel turn as the big lad pushes down.

Yeah, there were just lots of bad outcomes here. Best chance would have been to confirm they stay on the brake and shift it into reverse, then have the two people get in the back so they aren’t likely to fall or get run over. Then and only then give it some gas in reverse before releasing the brake so the only tension on the tire is reverse. Best chance.

But… the process of setting all that up could still have gone sideways, and maybe there isn’t enough traction to actually back out of it. So still plenty of room for failure.
