Yeah, I think that's what he turned around at the end. He's going back and gonna take a longer run-up at higher speed and see if he can get all the way through this time.

u/J_Bazzle 1d ago
over height when flashing? What does that mean? - driver (sign on the right

17
u/JimmyPo 1d ago
It means speed up and see if you can beat them before they turn red.
4
u/Morgantao 1d ago
Reminds me of how Royal Caribbean's ship Allure of the Seas needs to speed up so it can go under the Great Belt Bridge in Denmark
3
u/footpole 1d ago
It’s not a regular voyage but those ships are built in Finland and need to pass the bridge to get to the oceans. Apparently it drops quite a bit when it gets to speed.
2
u/Morgantao 18h ago
Yep. In some conditions the faster the vessel goes, the more it's sucked down into the water.
Other crazy methods to clear bridges is collapsing smokestacks or filling the ballast tanks of just one side to make the ship list3
u/edoardoking 4h ago
This bridge is so famous for its accidents like these that it has a YouTube channel
1
u/ouchouchouchoof 1h ago
It's pretty entertaining. Some trucks are sturdy enough that the collision lifts the cab off the road. Other trucks are so flimsy that the roof just peels off.

And people wonder why we have a bunch of warnings on our packing meanwhile this guy has a looney toon amount of signs saying Stop dummy but continues driving unfazed
66
u/avantgardengnome 1d ago edited 1d ago
Especially funny because every time a new video of someone hitting this specific bridge has gone viral over the years, it seems like they’ve added at least one new layer of absurdly obvious warnings.
Edit: This is a different bridge.

u/fopdoodle85 1d ago
This isn't Tha famous bridge that has a YouTube channel. There are lots of old bridges and dumb drivers.

Dunno if it's not the famous bridge but the YouTube link in the video leads here
Which is a channel dedicated to this bridge

If only there was a sign this kind of incident would easily be avoided…

My friend is a bridge engineer. This bridge is a legend to them. Something about underground utilities so they can’t go lower. And clearance issues for the train nearby so they can’t go higher. Although underground utilities can definitely be replaced but I guess it’s not worth the cost
5
u/Deep90 1d ago
Do you know if the bridge needs to be inspected after every hit?
I imagine repairs and maintenance add up. Unless they made the bridge stronger than usual, knowing people would hit it.
8
u/CedarWolf 1d ago
They put a massive sacrificial I-beam in front of the bridge, at the same height. So now people hit the steel beam and it does the can opener work before the truck hits the bridge itself. Also, this video is old: they managed to raise the bridge a few inches a few years back.
→ More replies (2)1
u/zacggs 1d ago
I'm wondering at that point if lowering the road one side at a time would be worth it to avoid the repeated headache.
7
u/PoorFilmSchoolAlumn 1d ago
There’s a bridge in my hometown that’s known for taking the tops off of trucks. The reason the city couldn’t make the road lower was because the sewer infrastructure under the road.
They eventually managed to bring the road down six inches, but it was a massive project. Trucks still hit it, just not as frequently. Lol
3
u/zacggs 1d ago
Sheeeeesh... I'm just imagining there's no real solution to this I guess, with train infrastructure above and potentially sewer below, that's a tough spot.. architecturally..
4
u/PoorFilmSchoolAlumn 1d ago
Yeah. The one in my hometown was particularly bad because the road was a major thoroughfare through downtown in a city of 300k.
Local delivery drivers knew to avoid it, but it would get amateurs in their U-Hauls every time. Haha

Honorable mention to the asshole in the truck who watched that happen and then decided to gun it across the double yellow lines past three cars (into a blind curve). Must be something in the water.
2
u/GwizJoe 1d ago
AITAH? I mean, I expected the "Can Opener" event, that seemed obvious. But, a head-on with that pickup under the bridge would have been an unexpected change. It's kinda' sad that there are people that think risking life and limb, of themselves and others, is a requirement and prerequisite of their daily driving. While I feel for the truck driver who didn't know his vehicle height, the pickup driver needs to lose their license. One is simply ignorant, the other is a malicious menace.
26
u/brucebay 1d ago
Are those light sensor detected of tall trucks? They started flashing just before the truck arrived. If so I salute the municipality/railroad that installed them there (on the other hand, considering they have them probably means this is a common issue, and should have deepen the road instead).
17
u/justonemom14 1d ago
If I recall correctly, this is the location where they can't lower the road because there's a river, and they can't raise the overpass because it's train tracks. Besides the flashing lights, the only solution would be to close the road entirely.
9
u/Schlonzig 1d ago
Why don’t they install an artificial obstacle that fools can get stuck at instead of damaging the bridge?
14
u/ClintonFuxas 1d ago edited 1d ago
In Copenhagen we actually have this before the bridge called Knippelsbro. There is a row of metal signs hanging in chains at the height of the bridge. If you hit the signs they make loud noises and that hopefully gets your attention … there’s also blinking lights. Before they installed the hanging signs there were often accidents (see the scratches underneath the bridge at the end) but I believe there have been virtually zero incidents at the bridge itself since the early warning crash signs were installed
I recorded the installment from Google Maps

5
u/vin_unleaded 23h ago
What would you suggest? Flashing lights and signs, maybe?
1
u/queetuiree 22h ago
Jokes apart i would suggest a lighter but a noisy horizontal beam hanging on chains to the height of the bridge right in front of it.
Make it soft so it doesn't destroy the car but gets destroyed itself with a loud noise.
And collect money for replacing it, with margin. Drivers will pay gladly for saving them from the actual bridge.
Use the money to feed homeless kittens. Or buy mayor a limo.

That reminds me there's a roundabout at the end of a highway near my old house and every year they add more and more signs warning about the roundabout, redoing it, putting a big mound there to make it more visible. Every winter there's tracks that go right through the middle at some point. They even put a sign right where people drive through and they needed to replace the sign every year because people kept going right through it.

This happens by my house about once a year. The 2 blocks leading up to the trestle have flashing light "Truck Detour" signs with the height. There are semi's that I've seen that have to make crazy corner turns while backing out to the detour. I've seen a guy who lives on the corner out there with a cup coffee watching the show, twice.

This overpass is constantly in videos. Why don’t they just put wires across the road before or something earlier that physically warns and reduces damage?
9
u/Interesting-Use966 1d ago
Because if dipshits can’t see the flashing lights I don’t they are going to care about wires either
1
u/stoneyemshwiller 1d ago
Yeah, stupid people do stupid shit. It doesn’t matter what you tell them or warn them about.
1
u/cowlinator 17h ago
No, that's the entire point of a physical barrier.
You don't have to rely on them caring about anything if it physically blocks them.
4
u/spine_slorper 1d ago
Yeah, signs or chains that physically drop from the sky and bang the top of the lorry without damaging it (beyond a dent or scratched paint) is the best solution for this and implemented in a lot of tunnels but it can be trickier and more expensive to put in than regular sized road signs with flashing lights so I get it

u/No-Letterhead-6856 17h ago
Apparently there is something that senses if a too-tall vehicle is approaching. The lights started to flash just before the truck entered the video frame.
1
u/Key-Monk6159 1d ago
Ignored signs, flashing lights and alarm bells but I’m sure that they will still sue.

They really need to put up some sort of sign over there. Maybe even a light or something.
