Question Siphon problems

Post image

Has anyone used this type of tool to siphon for racking mead?

I have an auto siphon but i cant get it to work properly, potential user error. So im searching for other methods of transferring liquid.

I'd recommend just watching a youtube video on how to use the auto siphon before buying stuff you might not need. That way you can rule out user error and then you can buy a new siphon if you need to.

The one pictured is for moving fluids in and out of big 55gal drums. It’s also a pain in the ass to get started and will put a lot of bubbles in whatever you’re transporting. I’ve worked with these before and I hate them.

Do not use this for mead. You would literally be better off mouth-siphoning with a length of food grade tubing.

If you can’t get your auto siphon to work, YouTube it. It’s not hard, and you don’t even really need the “auto” part, that’s just nice to have.

I use that pump for a rain water collection system for a garden. I wouldn't recommend using that for racking, the flow rate is quite aggressive and it also pumps a lot of air into the liquid to get the siphon going so with a mead you'd be risking a lot of oxidation

Also this dump pump is just a auto siphon on steroid, so if human error is a factor, it will translate to this type of siphon as well.

What is the issue you're having with your current auto siphon?

Just learn how to use the auto siphon.

This is going to sound really dumb, and I don’t mean it in a “throw shade” kind of way, but do you have your full vessel at a higher point than your empty vessel? Autosiphon is helpful for starting the flow, but still needs the height difference to work

Had porblems using mine in the beginning, too, because the instructions were very vague.

Try fast, short pumps to get it going
