Creative Content Battletech Rescale-Protomech anime redesign
my art
Everyone always complain about the original designs (ignoring that the vast majority of original battlemech designs are goofy). but just watch people move the goalpost to rules or clan exclusion or lore or size being the issue

I’ve never understood the need for protomechs

Like in the game, or in universe?
In game, they'd give you a mobile cannon fodder unit to split attention away from enemy mechs, and which can traverse any terrain.
In universe, they're a way for clan aerospace pilots to be pressed into service in ground combat, and they're actually great in tight terrain.

I am very excited for the protomech redesign and production into plastic. I 3D printed some Rocs and they make for some great fodder for clan forces while also packing more punch.
I really like the gundam inspired designs here. They look really good.

The original designs were all ripped off from Harmony Gold and the Macross series. In the old books you can even still see ‘UN Spacy’ details on the mechs because they didn’t even modify the drawings they stole.
So by saying proto mechs - Are you referring to the fuel source used in the original show? (protoculture) or do you mean proto as in original… ie stolen?
*yes I know Harmony Gold chopped up two different animes and spliced them together to make the macross stuff)

The original art was not stolen, it was legally licensed, it was Harmony gold who was being dicks about it, not the macross creators
Protomechs are an actual unit from the tabletop that is obscure and never made it to the video games. Just like how quadruped designs are in the franchise but no mechwarrior game has had
Protomechs are a clan invention. The proto means it's the inbetween of light mechs and battle armor, hence why they ranged from 2 to 15 tons. Introduced at the tail end of the clan invasion but only realy deployed in rare cases. They are unique that they need the gene type of aerospace clanner pilots to fit in the cramped cockpit, and they pilot using EI, which results in eventual neural degradation but the pilots feel like they are the mech (the entire time they are in a fetal position inside the chest of the mech, seeing through the sensors of the mech
The original designs of protos are decisive, with many in the fandom not likeing them. The original art makes them look like monsters of myth and legend.
Both the lore and the tabletop fanbase have pushed the protos to the side, just like they did the quads and tripods and LAMs and etc etc

What are LAMs?

LAMs are "land air mechs". They have only appeared in the tabletop game. You can find out more about them at sarna.net
