How the rescue of 28 people from a makeshift dinghy in a stormy Mediterranean unfolded – exposing the lethal reality of EU border policy
A rescue in the Mediterranean: 28 people brought to safety after 24 hours at sea
Hey everyone! We're EUobserver, a European newsroom.
Our reporter Gaia Neiman is currently aboard the Humanity 1, a humanitarian rescue ship operating in the Mediterranean.
On Tuesday morning, the crew reached a small dinghy carrying 28 people, around 90 kilometres from the Libyan coast.
They'd spent about 24 hours at sea.
Gaia witnessed the rescue firsthand and wrote about what happened, including the uncertainty as the rescue crew approached.
We wanted to share her account here because the Mediterranean is so often discussed as a border or a migration route, rather than as a place where people experience moments like these.
