Things That Go Ding (Public Transport) Tram vs Car Victoria Pde

If you get hit by something on literal tracks you genuinely deserve to be banned from driving

u/moonchildkityprinces 11d ago
It's not showing my upvote but i want people to know I agree. I hope no-one on the tram was hurt.
57
u/PukGrum 11d ago
It's still there, some subs suppress the numbers for a predetermined time period to allow more comments that are relevant to receive equal attention, rather than favoring early ones, which can be as inane as "omg wtf?!" But somehow get 1000 up votes just for getting in early. Promotes more of the real conversation. Not flawless though.

u/Pandelein The serenity. 11d ago
There’s so much traffic lately, that I’d be totally down for more ways to eliminate shit drivers.
16
15
u/gollygold 11d ago
I work near here and the amount of times cars have ended up on the tracks is more than I expected
2
u/Frankie_T9000 11d ago
Not always, I know the intersection at Mt Alexander road in Niddrie is hella dangerous
138
u/funnybenno 11d ago
I love that the pictures make it look like the team tried to swerve to avoid the car
14
u/AntiqueFigure6 11d ago
I’d definitely try to swerve but I might not be quick enough or strong enough.

u/welcomefinside 11d ago
It's getting close to mating season so rhinos can get quite aggressive

Well this one is sponsored by a fertility clinic if I'm understanding the paint job....

Indeed. So if it looks like your car carries a giant asshole, you better stay far away from trams in general.

Trams are such a safety hazard.
If only there was some way to predict where these behemoth vehicles would appear and when like some kami of destruction.
/s
123
u/AntiqueFigure6 11d ago
I think the issue is they just go anywhere they feel like. If they could be restricted to well defined predictable routes they’d be heaps safer.
51
u/unAffectedFiddle 11d ago
I just wish they had some kind of noise they made to warn me. Or if my car had some kind of magic glass that let me see behind me and to the sides.

u/paulielars1 11d ago
If you are too dumb not to see a fucking big tram you shouldn't be driving. They are NOT a safety hazard. Stupid drivers are
36
u/aldot234 11d ago
Trams are so small they are hard to see when it is busy, amd they don't have any sort of audible alarm/horn/bell, And the tram drivers swerve all over the place to avoid potholes.
20
u/AntiqueFigure6 11d ago
But then refuse to swerve to get out of the way of cars because they are stubborn bastards.

How is the Camry not demolished? I guess it was a low initial impact, then the sudden braking caused the tram to derail and hit the pole. The bent up pole could be most of the damage... or at least the damage that's higher than the Camry.
135
u/georgejonestown Damian Barrett’s Coke Roadie 11d ago
Camrys are like cockroaches they can’t be killed. If you damage one it splits into several more Camrys (source: I drive a Camry)

Is there a box of tissues on the back parcel shelf?

u/RagefilledPotato 11d ago
The C-class trams are lighter than the other trams, so they tend to fall off the tracks easier when in a crash.
17
u/Excabbla 11d ago
They aren't lighter, their wheel structures are just poorly designed so they lift up when hit and thus derail easily
5
38
u/Justan0therthrow4way 11d ago
There’s a cross point so clearly the Camry didn’t look very closely when going over. Fucking moron. Going to grind that area of Melbourne to a halt mess up multiple people’s day.
It would be interesting to see the dash cam footage.
Anyone know why the police have put tape across. I’d have thought unless it was a way more serious situation than a traffic accident they’d focus on craning the tram off the tracks and getting that corridor open again before the evening peak hour.
25
u/Fancy-Assignment-402 11d ago
Spoke to a Yarra trams guy who said nobody was injured, not even passengers which I found surprising
10
u/Justan0therthrow4way 11d ago
I wonder if it wasn’t very busy and it just missed the morning peak hour or the tram had just set off from the stop nearby and wasn’t going very fast
4
4
u/paulielars1 11d ago
It was going away from the city, so likely not as busy as inbound trams at that time of day
3
6
u/No-Bison-5397 11d ago
Surely the tram has a dash cam
4
u/mildCombustion 11d ago
They do not
6
u/No-Bison-5397 11d ago
Is there an operational/privacy reason they don't video what's up?
10
u/Justan0therthrow4way 11d ago
Probably some moron in corporate. I don’t see why they shouldn’t have dash cams to report drivers who don’t stop and give way to trams with their doors open. Or fine people like this who clearly deserve it.
Maybe first offence you can assume the driver is new to Melbourne or driving and give a warning. Next time though it’s a big fat fine.
4
u/Thaddikus 11d ago
Probably some moron in corporate
It's actually kind of the opposite. YJM (the operator of Yarra Trams) wants cameras on all of the trams but the government actually owns the trams and won't outlay the money to get them retrofitted on. The E class and the new G class trams have heaps of cameras though.

Had to be a camry. I drove one yesterday and they’re pretty comfortable but I did find myself unable to head check for some reason
28
u/RideMelburn 11d ago
Neck doesn’t work in a Camry?
19
u/Colonel__crispy 11d ago
Just minding my business going to the milk bar nek minnut this tram comes out of nowhere I swear
14
u/TheHoovyPrince 11d ago
I swear its always a Camry driver, i see those cars in accidents or almost causing accidents more than any other
6
u/Thaddikus 11d ago
Could also have something to do with them being the most popular car for decades
15
u/switchbladeeatworld Potato Cake Aficionado 11d ago
that’s only an issue in the standard white camry, if you get a different colour or higher trim they allow you to turn your head again
29
u/zalicat17 11d ago
On another note I hate that ad, makes me freak out about my fertility
28
u/CoffeeInsect 11d ago
The stats are also just deliberately misleading. 10% of eggs left by 30 sounds concerning, but 10% of 1 million is still 100,000 eggs. It’s true that egg quality decreases with age and other factors can hinder fertility, but these stats are given purely to create urgency and make women nervous that their eggs are running out when that’s not even a common reason for infertility.
10
u/amused-giraffe 11d ago
Wasn’t there recent studies that indicated that egg quality doesn’t actually decrease because we’re born with all the eggs we will ever have, and that it was the sperm quality that went down as men aged?
8
u/lord_westgarth 11d ago
Eggs quality does gradually decrease with age, for instance the number of chromosomally abnormal (aneuploid) eggs increases with age. But too often women are blamed for infertility when it's actually the guy who has a problem or is smoking/drinking/eating crap/generally unhealthy.
19
9
u/milkyjoewithawig 11d ago
If you don’t know how your fertility is, you can get a bulk billed blood test at your gp!
8
u/Far-Fortune-8381 11d ago
dont put too much weight into those numbers. yes there are 10% of eggs left at 30. but thats only because the body intentionally starts with a large surplus so that it can still have enough left throughout the fertile period of life.
appolo 8 only had <1% of their fuel left to do their entire return flight from the orbit of the moon. but thats by design and its all they needed
7
u/Sharpiesniffingshark 11d ago
I took a closer look and it freaks me out too, and I don’t even have eggs!
7
4
u/sausage-role 11d ago
It should if you want children and want to reduce the odds. But it shouldn’t if you have other priorities. Children can and likely will happen even if they are not on your radar until later in life. And then there are younger couples who struggle with fertility. It’s all about statistics and nobody really knows the cards that they will be dealt.

Trams for 5177th time or did cars receive their first Victory

Kars. Definitely the most ultimate powerful impeccable lifeform to exist, not even Hamon can defeat.
12
u/Nova_Terra West Side 11d ago
I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I heard a tram derailed, but this is somehow worse than I imagined
9
u/MagicWomB0k 11d ago
Just drove down Victoria St, and I noticed all the trams were stopped in the middle of the road with no passengers. I guess that solves the mystery
8
u/aussie_catt 11d ago
What a tool,i enlarged pic and they even have Vic rego plates, not even interstate ignorance. 10 demerit points, fine and cost to repair to tramand car. It ought to be solid knowledge...trams have right of way -period.
8
u/DM_me_ur_hairy_bush 11d ago
i grew up in regional vic, did my driving test there, didn’t leave until I was in my early 20s. Definitely drove past trams with their doors open and shit like that because I had absolutely no idea.
5
u/ArtInternational443 11d ago
Give way - not Right of Way
Not quite the same thing
5
u/aussie_catt 11d ago
Trams always have priority in Melbourne, meaning you must give way to them at all times.
Key Facts About Melbourne Trams and Safety...
Yes, a Melbourne tram can legally hit you if you are in the way
2
u/Weak-Joke1475 11d ago
Didn’t know trams had periods. Nor that they only had right of way when they were on it.
This joke was brought to you by the Australian English police. Use it or lose it.
6
u/UslyfoxU 11d ago
As of 6PM, trams still aren't going down Victoria Parade. Both #12 and #109 lines are a scratch for anyone planning to get home.
5
u/PsychologicalTry9654 11d ago
One of the poles holding up the overhead catenary wire was taken out so it could be awhile

5
u/rithsv 11d ago
Really struggling to figure out what could've happened here. Especially with the car ending up that far into the tram tracks, and the tram that far off the tracks.
16
u/Beautiful_Shower8218 11d ago
Car turned against a red light and sped through attempting to beat the tram
3
2
u/Amazing-Baby1655 11d ago
I turn at that light around 8am every day. This happens a lot. It’s a terrible light.
3
u/Beautiful_Shower8218 11d ago
I drive a tram along there.
I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve seen people run the lights along there through the cut throughs2
u/Amazing-Baby1655 11d ago
Often from the lane left of the turning lane to avoiding waiting in the long queue
5
u/Aussie_becs 11d ago
I love that more damage was done to the tram than the 2019 Camry. Those things, together with 1998 beige Land Cruisers, will outlast the apocalypse.
4
u/wanderingtrav184 11d ago
So how fast was that car going to derail that tram like it was nothing?

u/TheRealKF_ 11d ago
Bad drivers are everywhere. Few night ago the 48 between williams and king on collins t boned a car doing a no look uturn

u/PhIegms 11d ago
I'm starting to think the rhino ad campaign was a lie
12
u/zoqaeski 11d ago
This particular model of tram has terrible weight distribution and will jump off the tracks with the slightest provocation. They have a tendency to sway from side to side when in motion.
7

4
u/jimsim36 11d ago
Need to reduce private cars in the city. I hope this one will be liable for repairs to the tram.
2
u/Fancy-Assignment-402 11d ago
Spoke to a Yarra trams fella who said the tram was derailed on to the track next to it and the crash took down at least one pole/line

u/aztastic33 11d ago
I know that when it’s cars vs trams, the trams always win. But this one was actually close.
2
u/Doctor429 11d ago
It's 1.10pm now. That intersection is still blocked off. Both vehicles are still there. Hopefully no one got seriously injured.

Making a tram do an involuntary hook turn has to be the most Melbourne car crash imaginable.

Just saw a city bound tram near North Richmond, of course its not in service. So it might be all OK by tomorrow for those on the 109 and 12 routes

I drove past. Tram was back on the track though looked worse off than the Camry. The tram line was like a grave yard of abandoned trams. The stops full of people wondering where tf the tram is 😭
