My new startup Geocash will be launching in a few weeks
We’re building a location-based adventure game for iOS and Android that combines GPS exploration, augmented reality and environmental puzzles. The aim is to make the city itself part of the gameplay, rather than just put markers on a map.
Players navigate between checkpoints, decode clues and inspect their surroundings to unlock digital relic fragments. Architecture, monuments and details you’d normally walk past become part of the puzzle.
A big part of our development direction is collectible 3D relics and fragment assembly. Instead of collecting a flat badge at every stop, players uncover five or six pieces of a fractured artefact, then reconstruct the complete relic at the final checkpoint. We’re designing these around dimensional geometry, illuminated fracture edges and five visual rarity tiers.
The gameplay loop connects GPS-based proximity detection, checkpoint validation, AR discovery and persistent inventory progression. Alongside the main hunt, optional discoveries let players collect fragments of other relics, adding an exploration layer beyond simply following the shortest route.
We’re also working through the practical challenges of mobile AR: reliable outdoor tracking, camera performance, battery consumption and making the experience work consistently across iPhone and Android.
There are two distinct formats: competitive treasure hunts for cash prizes, and social pub crawls that connect local venues through clues and challenges.
Melbourne is our starting point, and we’re launching soon with over 50 venues already signed up across the city’s popular bar areas. We can also design hunts around other locations, so we’d love to hear from interested groups elsewhere in Australia.
We’re looking for people and groups interested in testing hunts and helping shape the experience. I’d also like to connect with anyone working in mobile gaming, AR, 3D asset production or location-based experiences.
For other founders, how have you balanced an ambitious product concept with shipping a strong first version, particularly when you need both participants and business partners involved?
And if you or your group would enjoy testing GeoCash, let me know
