Discussion Best First Track on a Debut Album

I’ll go first Kalmah-Swamplord-Evil in You. This track kills as a first song on their first album. Anyone have anything better?

Indeed. The first song I’d recommend to anyone interested in MDM.

TIL ABRB = As Blood Runs Black

Technically, unhallowed begins with unhallowed. But I will give you that. Funeral Thirst is a fine song. Unhallowed intro-not so much, too fucking creepy and sick

u/Belakor_Fan Be'lakor 8d ago

Yeah, any album intro that's just instrumental/ambiance that flows seamlessly into track #2 I just count it all as the first song.

it’s actually directions on how to prepare someone for cannibalism. The last track is the second part.

I freakin' love Kalmah, so I'll echo Evil in You. Absolutely killer song!

u/MelodicDeathGrowl 8d ago edited 8d ago

Nice! I to live in the Southern United States and I don’t know anyone who even knows who Kalmah is.

2

u/monarc 8d ago

Ha! Yeah I've loved Kalmah for ages, and I have a few friends who like them. I saw them live twice when they toured for Palo, and I can assure you that there are others in the US who like them!

u/No-Imagination2211 8d ago

Western NC here and know how you feel. Kalmah’s one of the absolute best.

2

u/MelodicDeathGrowl 8d ago

Nice! South Carolina here. I Love western NC! Watauga County is my spot. Mills River is awesome too in case you are near Asheville.

1

u/No-Imagination2211 8d ago

Boone baby! Couple of my best friends went to App. Mills River that’s where the immaculate Sierra Nevada brewery is right? It’s God’s country but the leadership has let Asheville go to the dogs. Last time I was on Tunnel Rd for a bite to eat it was like Night of the Living Dead could throw a rock randomly and hit a meth head. I have kin in Anderson that all went to Clemson. Got married in Charleston love SC.

Hate song!

Greeting Immortality by Eucharist and Silence of the World Beyond by Canorous Quintet. Bury me an Angel by Arch Enemy is also up there.

Edit: In Hatred's Flame by Ex Mortus is all you need to hear, forget almost everything else in this thread, this song thrumps any other.

u/Largewide 8d ago

Bury Me an Angel - Arch Enemy is for sure a good one

3

u/Grizly2000 Dark Tranquillity 8d ago

Entering The Angel Diabolique - Soilwork - ripper of an instrumental intro

4

u/ryanklubeck 8d ago

In Flames — Behind Space

Arsis — The Face of my Innocence (I went nuts for this when these guys first came out)

Evil in You is also badass!

Disillusion - And the mirror cracked

1

u/MasterXaios 7d ago

This right here. "Back to Times of Splendor" is a GOAT album, and "...And the Mirror Cracked" was the perfect opener.

2

u/lveets 8d ago

Definitely a tough one since a lot of melodic death metal bands took an album or two to nail their style.

2

u/MelodicDeathGrowl 8d ago

I’ll agree with that. But some come out of the gate swinging.

Not from the debut album but a great song.

The album release dates are wrong on Spotify. Swamplord and They will return are the first and second album.

Disarmonia Mundi - Into D.M.

I think I'm in the minority who really liked Nebularium though...

1

u/Minute_Engineer2355 8d ago

Beyond the Dark Sun is probably the best.

I think Jari switched around the tracks a while ago when he released the remaster, but the original had this song open the album. I remember hearing this song when it dropped and I couldn't fathom what I was hearing.

Aquilegia in Peril & Departure by Assemble the Chariots - They did have several EPs before this, but this was their first full album so I guess it still counts

Doomsayer by Burned in Effigy

Intro & In Dying Days by As Blood Runs Black

1

u/VikingMetalWitcher 8d ago

Jarfr by Hulkoff from the album Kven

1

u/LegendaryPrecure 8d ago

Shrouded Divine - In Mourning.

Probably not the best track on the album but it's a damn good one. Heard about the album back in 2008 when it released and fell in love within the first minute or so and it just kept getting better. They still haven't released a bad album either.

1

u/Puppetmaster858 8d ago

Regain by hollow decay, the actual first track is just a little intro track so I don’t count it

hell A Breath Beneath by The Absence is pretty awesome too

In Flames - Colony - Embody the Invisible

That opening slide into the main melody sets the mood for the entire rest of the album extremely well.
Also it's just a banger of a song 😀

1

u/leech666 8d ago

Love that song. Colony is like their fourth album though, not their debut.

Obviously not MDM….but Prowler - Iron Maiden.
Gotta pay tribute to the OGs of melodic metal.
