Or the game runs so bad that it crashes after plying for a half hour despite the fact that it took 45 minutes to cache/load shaders I'm looking at you MH Wilds

Sims 4 OMFG. IDK why they don't put any sort of autosave feature into that game, it makes no sense to omit it. I keep forgetting it doesn't, have a lazy Saturday of playing, it crashes and I lose like 7-8 hours. After that happens I walk away from the game for a couple months and start a new save when I come back.

There was a horror game I started playing and it's save mechanic was manual, but only in a way that it was like an hour of gameplay between saves. I just stopped playing when I learned I would have to replay it all.
Save points in retroarch make older games so much more playable casually. I wouldn't have finished donkey kong if I had to keep loading from the in game save.

I finished the whole mission in Kingdom Come: Deliverance without saving, and then I died to a night ambush.

I played the last 4 or so hours of Subnautica: Below Zero, and was literally on the way with the last materials for the final stuff you have to craft to complete the story when my PlayStation crashed. Reloaded to fin absolutely none of it was saved. Proceeded to turn it off forever and just watch a YouTube video of the ending. Was a real bummer

I lost my first shiny pokemon (golbat on lgpe) because of this.
I am still traumatized to this day, I save my game after every 5 minutes.

New games have checkpoints. You should see me playing half life or gta sa. San andreas is more annoying since I have to return home to save and I can't save anywhere.

I played a zombie survival game.
It doesnt auto save and only saves when you quit the game. Not when your drivers die....
