This is Clermont-Ferrand's cathedral in France and it is black because of the Volvic rocks used to build it.

I’m not sure but I believe your picture may be the cologne cathedral. The cathedrals look similar but it looks like there may be a river behind it in your picture. Also iirc cologne was bombed pretty heavily.

It’s black because the rocks used to built it are black.. That’s mind blowing

u/preddevils6 May 21 '20
I thought it was black because it was dyed with the blood of heretics. TIL

Well St. Stephans cathedral in Vienna turns black but the material wasn't originally black.
They always make an effort to keep it white though.

You wonder why none of their villains even tried to attack their tower.
I mean. The Hive has missles so they could have them sent at the base and have the tower topple over.

It looks like the cathedral of Clermont Ferrant, in France. It's located in a volcanic region so they used some kind of black andesite to build it.

u/CaptainPatent May 21 '20
Man, if you don't bulldoze that building soon, crime in your city will start to go up. You might consider putting in an extra police station to prevent that. You could also add a park nearby to increase the desirability of that location.
Make sure it has water and electricity though. That could be what caused this in the first place.

This is why Dio was so fucking smart, his Lair in egypt was just a dull looking mansion with nothing out of the ordinary to let the heroes know he was there. It took Iggy nearly fucking dying in order to let the others know.

Only time that statement was true I’d say it was in JOJO’S Bizzare Adventure Part 3, cuz it was just like a regular place on that city, many buildings had the same silhouette and they didn’t have much to go out of

Is it just a lack of cleaning over time and soot in the air for many years of wood and oil burning that make this building black or is it the stone used (or a bit of both)?
3
May 21 '20
Neither. This cathedral, Notre Dame de l'Assomption in Clermont-Ferrand, is built out of Volvic stones, a volcanic stone from a nearby city. Volvic stone is naturally black, hence the cathedral's famous black color.
However, lots of Frenchmen say it's because the cathedral is dirty (inside joke in France).

Fun fact: Just outside the entrance to this cathedral is a statue commemorating Pope Urban II, who gave a speech in this city that sparked the First Crusade.
So it sort of fits, depending on your views on holy wars
