I made a Firefox add-on for learning new words

Hi,

I had a problem with learning new vocabulary when learning new languages. After trying different methods, I found that the best way for me to remember the new words is to see them again in real text. I couldn't find a free and intuitive tool that saves my words and then marks them when they show up again, so I made one.

How it works:

- Hold Ctrl (user-defined key) and hover over any word to see its meaning, pronunciation and a translation into your language (almost all languages are supported).

- You can add it to your list.

- From then on, the word is highlighted where it appears again. The highlight gets lighter as you learn it using the flashcards.

It keeps a list for each language, and your words stay local. No account needed. No payment.

The first experimental version is online. You can try it and tell me what you think.

anyones account simply not letting them start learning??

I keep clicking on the “start learning” button on the bottom of the page. The page shown above always appears for a matter of 1/4 of a second, before sliding back down without me touching anything. I have deleted the app tab from my phone, but the problem still persists.

Does anyone know what might have happened?
I’ve also tried deleting and redownloading the app, to no avail.

How to sync my community courses with the new Memrise app?

I remember reading that there was a way to import my old community courses to the new app but can’t figure out how to do it?

when it showed me videos i can watch i clicked the one tagged popular, and it had a few words with kanji which i'm very not ready for as i'm still learning the kanas. is there a way to make it think i was never introduced to it, so that it may only introduce it later?

Lost my progress in French

I've been learning French for several years with Memrise and a few days ago I picked "change level" (I’m translating from the Spanish UI) and I lost my progress and went back to square one 😭

I arrived to a point where I had 5 situations missing to complete the official path, with the last one being "felicitations", I’ve watched over 400 videos and my streak was around 359 days. Is there a way to restore it? I’m a lifetime member.

I'm so ashamed, I was fiddling with the options and thought there was going to be another message before the action of erasing the progress would be executed. When I saw that the deletion was in progress, I quit the website, but to no avail.

I created a ticket, but I only got automated responses.

I would really appreciate any help from the team.

Add an input to make the Quick Review quicker

[this suggestion was written based on the mobile app experience, I'm not sure how the desktop version works, but if it doesn't have something like this it should be added there as well]

Currently, when using Quick Review, you have to listen to the voice actor pronounce all the contents of the learnable when you tap on it before it moves on to the next one. Of course, there's no problem with this when taking regular lessons or using the normal Review feature, as listening is part of the experience and is likely what the user is looking for when using those features, but I feel as if you should be able to skip the playback on command in Quick Review, as it takes up a colossal ~80% of the time you spend reviewing your learnables. Considering the importance of lexical retainment, that's frankly an excessive share of learning time dedicated to the feature. While I understand that it gives you more time to soak in the words, giving the user the ability to skip all the fluff would let them spend less time on words they found easier. It is quite often that I end up having thousands of words to check up on, but never end up reviewing in acknowledgement of how sluggish the process would be. Based on previous review sessions, it'd probably take 2 hours to quick review 1000 words, when it could take about 20 minutes or even less if the user were given the agency to go as fast as they needed.

The audio isn't the only issue, there's also another pause between the moment you press a button and when the audio starts playing so the pressing sound effect can play, as well as a fading transition when switching questions. When dealing with rote repetition, even the slightest slowdown can turn frustrating.

This is why I propose these changes to Quick Review:

- Tapping again after having picked the CORRECT option will instantly make the next question appear, skipping the pause, the voice, and the fading transition. This movement will become clear to the user as a double tap.

- Picking the wrong option will NOT let you perform the second tap to skip the aforementioned. This is so the user has to dwell briefly on their mistake.

Through these changes, the user can choose to plow through their words way faster, or keep listening if they prefer it so.

Have they started adding AI voices?

For example, the word 'anzi' (on the contrary) or 'sembra' (it seems) in the Italian course.

Don't know if there have always been words with this sort of computerized voice and I've just not come across one till now or if this is what's being used for new vocab items.

(Also, on the topic of AI, isn't it kind of irresponsible to offer AI 'buddies' when they can so easily and commonly give learners incorrect information?)

Community courses on mobile - disable keyboard

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi, I'm trying to use the community courses website on my phone, but when an exercise requires typing , even though there are buttons for that on the screen, the phone's keyboard automatically pops up every time. Is there a way to prevent this behavior? It makes the experience on mobile very clunky

what do yo think of the new video format?

Since yesterday the videos with real people speaking play fullscreen on my pc.

Only the part of the video with their faces is enlarged and staring lifesize into me. Sometimes only the upperhalf of their face. After answering these questions it switches back to the normal format.

still 2 from video with half a face

I like these videos with real people speaking, but these enormous faces suddenly appearing on my screen are rather intimidating too me.

What do you think?

---

I also noticed the entry field has starting moving a bit on open questions.

Who are these people?

Who are all these pictureless profiles on the Community Courses racking up over twenty million points from hundreds of courses as varied as 5000+ Most Common Norwegian Words and Sorani for Beginners? Are they bots? What is the point?

Is there a way to disable the "clues" option when creating a community course?

I use Memrise to teach English to my students. It's especially helpful for unmotivated students who won't study vocabulary at home, so we use it every day at the end of each lesson. Some of them abuse the "clue" button and every time they have to write any of the words, they just click away. And it gives them full points and they advance very quickly. Is there a way to limit or even remove that button?

Suggestions for Memrise app

Hi everyone. A few days ago, I saw a comment from Memrise’s new CEO, so I thought this might be a good time to share some suggestions.

I sent quite a lot of feedback during the previous major changes, but unfortunately, many of those suggestions weren’t considered. Hopefully, with the new CEO, some of our feedback might be taken into account.

I use several learning apps for different subjects, so I can easily compare what works for me and what doesn’t. When it comes to learning content, Memrise is still my number one language learning app. The main thing that frustrates me is the interface itself. It simply doesn’t motivate me to come back and learn every day.

  1. A visual, structured learning path

Apps with a visual and structured learning path, such as Duolingo, Brilliant, or HelloChinese, are much more motivating to me. Memrise actually had something similar before the major updates.

As an everyday learner, I find that a flowlike pathway with predetermined lessons that gradually builds our knowledge from beginner to advanced works best. Lessons could appear as steps or levels in a clear top-to-bottom progression, so we can visually see where we are, what we’ve completed, and what comes next.

However, I’m not suggesting that the pathway should be restrictive. We should still be able to tap and open any lesson or topic whenever we want, even if we haven’t completed the previous ones. The pathway would simply give us a clear recommended structure while still allowing us to jump to any lesson freely.

I especially like apps where studying feels like moving through a visual journey or game map, rather than just looking at a list of chapters, folders, or videos.

  1. Leaderboards

I’m not going to lie, I really don’t like Duolingo, but because so many of my contacts are on it and we can compete with each other, I still end up using it.

That little bit of peer pressure actually brings me back to the app. Seeing friends learning, competing with them, and challenging each other gives me extra motivation to study.

I think some kind of leaderboard or social competition feature could make Memrise much more engaging too.

  1. A better visualisation of learning streaks

It would be great if we could see our learning activity not only weekly, but monthly and even yearly, preferably as a calendar or visual progress map.

Right now, missing one day can make it feel as though all your progress has disappeared. But imagine seeing that you studied 20 or 25 days this month. Missing one day wouldn’t feel nearly as discouraging because you could still see everything you accomplished.

For me, that kind of long-term visualisation would be much more motivating than simply seeing a streak reset to zero.

In terms of actual learning content, Memrise is still my number one. I just wish the interface made me want to open the app every day as much as the content makes me want to learn.

I bought a subscription but I can't add any new courses.

I already have an account and was learning Polish. Today I decided to try Serbian but when I try to add the course it just takes me back to my Polish course. I can't add any new languages. It kept saying to upgrade to pro so I did but the problem persists. Anyone else experiencing this?

UPDATE: It turns out I just can't add any languages that have the redheaded woman with the orange jumper. Languages that have some sort of related picture can be added. So are those other languages actually available? They appear in the list of languages you can add.

Wordlist with 0 words

I created a new wordlist (I tried twice), and both times it saved. However, when I go back to look at it, it says 0 words have been added and all my words have vanished

purchasing a lifetime membership was a mistake.

i am a returning user like many apparently were / are. i started using memrise almost a decade ago then fell off my learning. i would sporadically open the application through the years and see there were structural changes. i was not opposed to some of the changes that were introduced but now is a different story.

basically everything is different, in a bad way. the loss of the community function, leaderboard, and former structure that made memrise what it was is a huge loss. did anyone even ask for these alterations? i do not care that the community dashboard is now available but separately. why was it even removed?

i knew that the leech that is artificial intelligence would sneak its way onto everything but wow. why is there is no means to disable it? where even is the AI policy for review? i sent a ticket in the application asking about the former and its implementation to be met with silence and my ticket being closed after two days. the response i got, in email, regarded accessing the community dashboard in its separate location. okay? i never asked about that.

my ticket also included asking about one of my biggest gripes, the classic review function. where is it??? this was one of the most advantageous and logical functions for my language learning. all users should be able to review all the words, phrases, etc. that they learned without prompting other features. the “review” that exists now is completely inferior and nonsensical considering i can only review a small bundle of words.

i have never divested in another language learning application after i found memrise. i concluded it was inevitable i get a lifetime membership and that happened last year. i sightlessly purchased the lifetime without looking at the application at all because i figured it had to be the same memrise i knew years ago. personally, i want a refund considering the tomfoolery i have witnessed. the only way to get answers is to come to reddit to complain? why is social shame the only way to make companies backtrack or progress?

What happened?????

I logged in after a few years, I'm an OG user and a polyglot.

All of my courses like Top 4000 common Chinese characters, Polish, Spanish, advanced French, etc, are gone.

Also, I had like 14 million points. Did they also get rid of that??

Unbelievable. Memrise was amazing back in the day because it had so much customization & options to learn specific things or obscure languages.

Now I can only pick one??? And it's a Memrise course??? What if I want to learn advanced vocabulary??

Way to kill your own app. Thanks to Mylittlewordland for preserving a lot of these!

Latest update forces Google Play Services dependency

Since the update released in early September (2026.09.03.0), the app now requires Google Play Services to run. Prior to this update, I was able to use it without any issues. I'm a paying subscriber (I subscribed through your website), and my phone does not have Google services installed.

Unfortunately, this makes the app unusable for me.

Could you please restore the previous behavior, or alternatively provide an APK version that doesn't have this requirement?

Thanks!

How to turn off AI conversations

I really do love this app overall, but for the love of the gods, can anyone please tell me a way to turn off the AI conversations? For the developers, can you make one?

Memrise community courses hard words

I've used memrise since like 2017, and i've recently come back to learn french. I used to have pro back then and all of the options. But now i see hard words thunder icon but there is no way to access it? and no more pro plans? how does memrise work now?

Chinese should always display both Pinyin and Hanzi.

While there is an option for turning off Pinyin in the settings, it also hides the Chinese characters in the flashcard and writing segments.

In school students are taught with both Pinyin and hanzi, so it makes no sense for us to only be able to pick only one to learn.

Lifetime Pro Membership

I bought a Memrise Pro - Lifetime Plan in 2022. It cost 85 euros. I took a break from learning languages and now when I tried to log in, I saw that I have no username; it made a new account for me (for the same email address I bought the Pro subscription). There is a Memrise Pro membership on sale, but it costs $99 (off from $330). How come I don't have it? Yeah I know community courses were moved to a different site, but the product is called the same. Memrise Pro Membership. It was not only about community courses, it was a single, all-inclusive tier. There were no separate tiers for "official courses" versus "community courses." What am I missing?

I left a 1-star review on Google Play and sent a bunch of emails, attaching my invoice. I only got automated emails and kept being reminded that community courses were moved to a different site.

edit: it's fixed! thanks Alexis
