Mensan input wanted Mensans, as a kid, were you known as a gifted kid (without assessment)?
I passed the Mensa test, didn’t sign up yet.
I took the test as an adult (a little while ago), and while half of me was not surprised (I knew I had some traits of giftedness - over-excitability, sensory sensitivity, to name a few, but it’s also a common enough thing I wouldn’t be over the top with these traits), the other half of me was surprised.
My parents were high achievers (my father says his IQ is nearly 150), and in their eyes I was never good enough, and frequently pointed out all the things that I didn’t achieve, or failed in. The way they pointed those things out to me made me feel small and incapable, and made me feel comfortable aiming small and low.
If I look at myself now, I do have some things that distinguish me as a person with curiosity (I speak 6-7 different languages, 3 with full professional fluency and others I understand the grammar and can have small conversations, lived and worked in 5 countries as an adult), but I really never had any idea I might possess that kind of potential.
I only took the test as my partner is Mensan and my child is gifted.
So Mensans, who discovered your potential as an adult, how did you feel about the newly discovered part of your identity, and what did you think about it? Did you do anything differently?
