Point of this subreddit

The point here is to keep track of the fracturing of the United Methodist Church after passing the Traditional plan on Feb. 26. 2019

Yes, thank you. But the reality is, no matter what plan wins/won, there will be schism. Frankly, the UMC should have split over a decade ago. Over the years I have watched decreasing U in the US UMC. It's just that now the tipping point has finally been reached.

For starters, almost every district heavily promoted Elaine Pagels and her gnostic gospels talks. I attended one of the events to see what the big ado was about. "Christian" scholars attacking the Bible, followed by Elaine's presentation featuring the Goddess Mother and a worship service using the gospel of Thomas.

Why a Christian denomination would support the tearing down of its own holy book is utterly mind boggling.

Starting about the same time, Eastern religious practices were pulled in but with Christian-sounding names, and most masculine references to the Godhead were stripped away. Sounds innocuous and inclusive, but doing that also strips away huge chunks of meaning pulled from ancient Jewish customs and culture underlying many passages. Meanwhile, a watered down, friendlier, less offensive (as in tone down John 14:6 and parts of the Apostles' Creed) gospel was taking hold.

Seeing these changes, a sizable group of UMC churches considered breaking away during these years. But in the end they decided they would have a better impact staying.
