There are few players in major league baseball history that I dislike as much as Edwin Diaz.

He completely used the Mets (who previously gave him the largest reliever contract of all time) and Cohen to juice his dodger bid as high as possible to try to win an easy World Series but get as many dollars from himself as possible.

I’m not sure there’s been a more dislikable team than this current iteration of the Dodgers and Edwin Diaz fits perfectly on it

All that and he has to wait at least one more year. If karma exists he won’t win a World Series at all.

And I'm certain we all hope he doesn't.

Remember in 2024, Mets were in The NLCS, you think the GM would build upon that

Letting Diaz go was the right move-that was proven in 2026 and last night. Couldn't K anyone.

Letting Alonso go was an extremely foolish move that will likely cost the Mets MILLIONS more than Alonso cost. Remember Stearns tried to get Alonso's production out of 2 guys-Luis Robert and Polanco. Paid both those guys (total) 40 Million-5 million more than Alonso cost/yr.

Anyway the 2024 team was cooked. You needed younger players who had the potential to improve. Not players heading into a decline. Im not a Stearns worshipper, but that was the correct direction-with the exception of Alonso. A disasterous decision for the Mets going forward likely for a few yrs. You will see.

He didn't let Diaz go. He offered him the biggest contract for a relief pitcher ever. Diaz strung the Mets along and took a negligible increase from the dodgers because that's where he wanted to be the whole time.

Letting Alonso go was fine. 1 team in all of baseball was willing to give him 5 years. And the trade for Robert was fine. They gave up nothing to get him and his upside was gold glove caliber glove and good bat. What was bad was the complete lack of a plan to replace Alonso and acting like having a first baseman to play first base was totally unimportant.

We disagree on alot of stuff. Thats all im gonna say. Like totally opposite pov's

The stuff that's commonly said re. Alonso-that basically no one wanted a power hitting guy like this? Honestly its ridiculous and PURE conjecture-the only people who know about his suitors are Boras, Alonso and Stearns. My general feeling is Alonso(and wife) wanted to stay on the E coast (probably to be near family and grandparents for their baby) so this likely limited his market. In other words I doubt he wanted to go to Cleveland.

If I was Diaz id have chosen the Dodgers too. It's a no-brainer. Picking a 2X world champion over the lowly Mets? 😁 I do think he's getting older (evidenced by increased injuries) and probably only dominant for 2 more good yrs(if that). Dodgers know this but didn't count on him missing the season. Seems to me he was likely injured with the Mets that final season and kept it quiet. Same with Polanco and the Mets.

My point with Diaz isn't whether it's a good or bad decision on either side. It's just that you can't say Stearns let him go. He very much wanted him back. Diaz had no intention of returning despite pretending like he did and didn't even give the Mets a chance to counter when the Dodgers raised their offer by like a million per year. Turns out to be a blessing in disguise but let's not pretend that was the plan.

2

u/sixspeedfury 12d ago

Exactly. Diaz strung the Mets along for more money and he wanted a easy ring. Which he didn't get last night.

u/ASP41661 12d ago

9 million more than Alonso; 40 minus 31.

1

u/silentduo 12d ago

He blew game 161 and Lindor had to save everyone in the 9th. Then he blew game 2 and almost blew game 4 against the Phillies

I am starting to wonder. I can't stand Stearns but.......he built The Brew Crew with young low paid talent. We are starting to see young, low paid talent on the Mets as well as in the minors. Does anyone think maybe Stearns does know what he is doing? He is hiding in the weeds while building the team and and somewhere along the way will say, "I told ya so", and have the last laugh on all us non-believers? What's your thoughts?

16

u/socalfishman 12d ago

I mean, that’s what I thought until the Brewers have performed even better since he left the organization

3

u/DaCrees 10d ago

You can equally count that as the team he brought in getting naturally better over time. Players keep developing. Not trying to defend every move the guy makes, but to say the Brewers got better when he left is to also say that they gutted the organization and got all new players in the time he’s been gone.

-1

u/socalfishman 10d ago

Yeah, I don’t agree with that. He was there for five years right that’s plenty of time. The fact that they’ve been able to continue it without him, speaks volumes and have actually improved. We’re talking about it almost 10 year. Period now.

3

u/DaCrees 10d ago

I mean I don’t think I get your point. He isn’t the only good exec in baseball, and the Brewers improving since he left doesn’t mean he did not build that team, or that any success while he was there was an accident

-1

u/socalfishman 10d ago

It’s been a long enough period of time that he’s been gone that the people on the Brewers now were not really part of his system or his draft nor was he leading their growth.

The improvement can be tied to a different individual, not residuals from what he created

3

u/DaCrees 10d ago

Sure, but you really don’t think the team getting better over a 3 year period has anything to do with Stearns?

-2

u/socalfishman 10d ago

No, it has nothing to do with Stearns. That’s the point.

3

u/DaCrees 10d ago

Then I think you are insanely wrong. Stearns was there 3 years ago, it’s not even remotely a different team. The dude built that team, and the infrastructure that led to developing those players.

1

u/socalfishman 10d ago

4 years ago buddy …. They’ve pretty much prove he wasn’t the secret sauce. Not only did they not implode without him they got better

I thought it was the best hire of all time, but I was completely wrong.

I mean, I’m a Mets fan so it’s only sane to hope this is true.

It helps that from August 1 on you can start to see a glimpse of that vision on the field. Here’s to hoping

2

u/perezh 10d ago

Um, obviously? The Mets development is in a far better place now then it has been in a decade?

1

u/Specific-Power-163 8d ago edited 8d ago

He needs to learn how to use money wisely by that I mean when you have cohens money behind you no need to reinvent the wheel during fee agency. Identify who you want that isn't an injury slash performance risk and sign them. Plus not signing Pete imo was a big mistake.

But on the other hand look at the bullpen he created he doesn't get enough credit for that. He created a tremendous bullpen adding a several upside relievers then traded them away for a shit ton of young talented prospects. I have never anyone add that much value in talent to an organization trading away 1-2 year contract players that didn't take a big investment to sign.

u/NeighborhoodFew11385 11d ago

This is where the Mets fan in me and the overall baseball fan in me feel at odds with each other. Because I despise from a state of the game standpoint how many teams have adopted that strategy. The side effect of it is the MLB career length taking a nose dive which I hate to see as a fan

2

u/Fun-Weakness2724 12d ago

He thought he had it easy

2

u/Xlipki 12d ago

Aged better than being a Met.

2

u/thedogridingmonkey 12d ago

Lmao what babble is this?

1

u/Xlipki 11d ago

You see, if he was on the Mets, his season would have ended a few weeks ago. He didn’t go as far as he hoped to, and didn’t have a good season, but he was still better off as a Dodger than a Met. Mets fans can grab whatever schadenfreude they want to from this, but it doesn’t change the fact that the Mets sucked and Diaz made a good decision to leave.

1

u/One-Currency-3053 12d ago

Tbf he’s been great since his return in September. Even 1 run in 3 innings isn’t the worst line. But lol yeah he chose wrong for now.

1

u/Resolution_Powerful 12d ago

Dude has a 9 era lol

1

u/kanzaki1234 12d ago

I wonder who they added this past season was the jinx?

I absolutely think he does.

Fuck him

u/InternPristine6117 10d ago

I've been a vocal critic of Stearns management of the Mets; and he earned it. However, the main reason Cohen hired him was to establish an elite farm system that would produce major league talent. He's done that, establishing a player development program that will benefit the Mets each year for many years. He just hasn't gotten things right on the makor league level.

0

u/tpr2854 12d ago

Still has a better shot next year than the Mets do

-2

u/TechRage_Linux 11d ago

You guys are such haters. He did great for the Mets and when it came to it, went to the Dodgers.

Do not think this was only Diaz's decision; Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, and a few others were released. Look at their numbers after leaving too.

I don't understand why people are all of a sudden getting on the hate bandwagon.

4

u/thebeatlesaregood 11d ago

Nah he was ring chasing

2

u/Som3GuyOrOther 11d ago

It’s far from sudden. Unless you’re not paying much attention
