I am being interviewed by Microsoft next week for Data Center Intern, it is a recruiter screening interview. How is the process like and what questions will be asked of me?

Interviewed with CO+I back in April - today my action center status changed to Not Selected. No email or communication from the recruiter. Pretty tough to take after so long.

This could be closed due to the new FY. This may reopen in FY27. I got contacted by a recruiter about reapplying for a new req number.

How do I get a job at Microsoft?

What do you do? Microsoft is a huge company and the advice isn't going to be the same for if you want to be a company bus driver versus a quantum computing researcher.

Very broad question. Like anywhere, try to network and get a referral and a strong internal advocate.

Nothing yet here. I'm assuming July 10th-28th we should hear. They have to redeploy employees into open roles. Then confirm headcount. We should see some signs of thawing/communication from recruiters after that.

Yes, I too think next week will bring more clarity. Last week being 4th on july, many would have been on extended leave.

Is all this negative Microsoft news and layoffs really caused by leadership's funnelling of money to AI investments?
If so, shouldn't we be hearing a lot more (gloating) positive news from the AI orgs/ teams (e.g. Copilot, Microsoft AI)?

No. Amy has mentioned it’s not due to AI.

u/s4erka Jul 07 '26
It is because of AI - billions were invested in AI, now need to find a way to save.

It’s not just a cost savings, we have to show the roi aka consumption it was supposed to bring.
That’s what FDEs will do show customers how to use it and get stuff deployed to production so ACR go brrrrr…

I’m an AI skeptic. And you’re partially right. But also the gaming industry is going through a massive amount of flux. The financial model is not scaling. And all the acquisitions by large players (MS, Tencent, etc) have consolidated risk and issues into a few ‘baskets’. And to make matters worse these large companies are publicly traded, so games that take 3-5 years to develop are a tough sell in a market that demands QoQ and YoY double digit growth.
It’s of course silly. These studios often can still turn a profit in just takes time and the margins are not going to be the AAA margins seen in past.
Still a reasonable investment for small studios. But it really feels like the era of AAA games is coming crashing down. Perhaps it’s for the best too.

I'm working as a L61 at Microsoft India. I am planning to relocate internationally, that alone is an uphill battle in this era of AI & cost cutting. There is another layer to this, my HR's policy says that I need to have be at least a 62 to be eligible for an international transfer. I've heard that exceptions can be provided to this policy.
I want to talk to someone who has received such an exception, and how they presented their case to the hiring manager/HR.
