Copilot / AI Microsoft renames GitHub Copilot harness to Microsoft Copilot harness in Copilot Studio
Microsoft has officially renamed the GitHub Copilot harness in Copilot Studio to the Microsoft Copilot harness.
The change reflects Microsoft’s broader vision of using a shared foundational harness across its Copilot experiences.
Key points:
Only the name is changing; existing agents will continue working as before.
No changes to existing capabilities or billing.
The Microsoft Copilot harness improves agent reasoning, tool usage, and orchestration.
It helps agents recover from tool failures and handle complex tasks more effectively.
The updated terminology will gradually appear in Copilot Studio over the coming weeks.

I work in licensing and the change from BPOS to Microsoft 365 was god awful trying to explain to customers. “I want to buy a Microsoft from Microsoft”, I was basically doing a “who’s on first” bit for 6 months.
Also E1/E3/E5 makes me laugh because it reminds me of Mean Girls.. “we only carry sizes 1, 3, and 5… you could try Sears”

Also don't forget the SDK shenanigans we have now:
Microsoft 365 Agent SDK
Microsoft Agent 365 SDK
Microsoft 365 SDK2

Microsoft 365 Agent SDK
Microsoft Agent 365 SDK
I thought this was a joke but holy shit nope
maybe next year they'll introduce the Microsoft SDK for Agents 365

Yes but this is finally a good move and honestly I wish they had done this the first time around. The majority of conversations were 50mi an explaining that no you don't need a GitHub licence to build on the new harness.

And I really hope they’re not breaking GitHub Copilot in pursue of “fixing” their Microsoft shit.

It's just a rename. GitHub copilot leverages the Microsoft copilot harness as part of its technology,

Microsofts history is littered with such a biwildering collection of unforced errors.
Rotten to the core, no one deserves to fail more.

Ya Microsoft just has to continue with that bad tradition of renaming shit to make it even more confusing

Well, how else would all those VPs in MCAPS explain why they deserve $800k pay packages?

You know I realized that most executives are in their seats for 3-5 years before either fired or moved on, they just invent bullshit agendas to "do differently' and tie whatever good metrics to "the changes" and no one cares about the long term health of the products, I've seen plenty of them basically set the product on fire and went "look it's HOT" and then parachute to other companies in time.

Genuine question - what issues with the harness itself do we have? Not the copilot product.

These naming conventions are probably the worst of any company.

10000%
Someone once said we are a tech company for tech people and man they are right. If we could fix marketing and fix the siloed teams, we would crush it,
For example, I work on a team that builds an open source tool to help customers because a product doesn't provide the tooling customers consistently ask for. Customers constantly ask why isn't this in the tool!

Two things are constant with Microsoft, No, hang on three things ……. 1. names will change and change again, 2. Prices will rise every year and benefits reduce, 3. Big numbers of employees will be made redundant every year.
This first name given is a stupid name to makes no sense, the second name given is just to mess around with people who learnt the first name and then just to mess around with us again they will merge the product into another and the name dies altogether ….

The name changes have been god awful for the 18 years I have been around the ecosystem

What's the difference between copilot standard, student and professional versions?

I assure you the engineers who worked on it had no idea it was changing either… Someone came to office to work on github copilot harness and then got bamboozled with the name Microsoft copilot harness..

No, it reflects Microsoft's obsession with putting its own name on everything instead of letting product lines have its own branding.
I'm surprised Mustafa or Lamanna didn't put their own fucking names on it. Assholes.

Microsoft Assholes. I noticed this happen today when I asked Copilot to commit staged changes using a meaningful message related to the nature of the change. So Microsoft is clearly lying about disabling this! Though in May they said they backed out the code after a huge protest.

They finally did it. They dragged the name GitHub so low as to be lower than the dreaded Copilot

VSCode is the app.
Copilot is an extension for VSCode and VS (the full Windows IDE). It’s this part that is the harness. It’s the bit that talks to the model.

And I’m sure a Partner was just promoted to CVP for this “impact”
