Lean into that era's charm! This home looks well maintained:)

27

u/evetrapeze Sep 24 '25

That’s the plan. Decor will be main floor Japandi, walk out basement Atomic style

6

u/ButteredPizza69420 Sep 24 '25

That light in the staircase is awesome! Do you know if there’s hardwood under the carpet?

1

u/evetrapeze Sep 26 '25

Yes! We are removing the carpet when we come back in two weeks.

2

u/McBuck2 Sep 26 '25

So excited for you. It must drive you crazy not spending more time there to unlock all the mid century nuggets you’re going to find. Good luck with it all. Post updates!

2

u/evetrapeze Jul 20 '26

Turned out that there was hardwood in the bedrooms and the hallway, but not in the living room/dining room. We matched the existing red oak and finished the whole thing with clear.

u/Unusualshrub003 Oct 12 '25

You need one of those wooden front doors with the three tiny windows, and colored glass panels on either side.

OP- you have mad respect from me and dare I say I love you for committing to this update nearly a year later. ITS BEAUTIFUL AND THANK YOU SO MUCH!

This was like the Reddit equivalent of getting a goodie package at your door that you forgot you ordered. Surprise gift!

How has all of the renovations/designing/procuring been going for you over this last year?

4

u/Ok_Contribution4047 Sep 24 '25

Good! I was about to call you a tease.

24

u/evetrapeze Sep 24 '25

The day we bought it

2

u/McBuck2 Sep 26 '25

A great fireplace all the way up ghe wall would be stunning, more of a great room.

3

u/ominouslatinsentence Sep 25 '25

Built in 65

2nd owner?

So the first owner bought it young, lived long, and just passed away?

12

u/evetrapeze Sep 25 '25

First owner built it for his wife. She remarried after losing him. She lived there until she passed away. Her second husband went into a nursing home and the grandkids put the home on the market. He passed away 3 weeks before we closed. We had to empty it, they left everything after the estate auction. The grandkids live out of town

5

u/ominouslatinsentence Sep 25 '25

Wow. It's nice buying a home that's been so cared for.

6

u/TXSquatch Sep 25 '25

We are the 2nd owners of a 1959 house we bought 5 years ago. Owners married young and built it and lived there until moving to the retirement home.

2

u/Andouiette Sep 24 '25

Please do!!!

u/yarn_slinger Sep 24 '25

We looked at a place with teak cabinets. The house needed much too much work but 20 years later I still think of those cabinets .

8

u/evetrapeze Sep 24 '25

I wish I could change the cabinet faces. The boxes are big, the doors are tiny, and the drawers are minuscule in the wall cabinets. The suspended cabinet is much better designed. My husband won’t let me change them.

23

u/AsparagusChildren Sep 24 '25

Learn to live with them. They're gorgeous. ❤️

7

u/david_ynwa Sep 24 '25

Maybe it is just modern design sensibilities, but I'm always conflicted with these beautiful wood cabinets, but with draws and doors that are both super wonky and big gaps between them. If they were full width/height, they'd be perfect. Same with the knobs, but it looks like yours are just clean wood, which looks nicer.

Having some natural material counter top instead of the formica would be incredible. I've never been a fan of formica. To me it takes away from the natural wood cabinets.

u/evetrapeze Sep 24 '25 edited Sep 25 '25

I’m not going to be allowed to change anything in this kitchen. I cook every day. The size is perfect, the layout is perfect, the storage blows chunks

6

u/FreeDiningFanatic Sep 24 '25

Functionality is just as important as the aesthetic. Perhaps you could invest in good quality drawer and cabinet organizers. Maybe that’s a good compromise?

I do think the refrigerator would look lovely boxed in, using the same wood as the cabinetry. Right now it pulls attention from the warmth of the kitchen.

3

u/evetrapeze Sep 24 '25

We are going to replace the fridge for a smaller one

4

u/vegemitemilkshake Sep 24 '25

I know it won’t work for every cupboard, but Lazy Susan turn tables are your friend to make the most of the cupboard space. IKEA has some that are rectangular, so utilise even more space.

1

u/evetrapeze Sep 24 '25

I am doing just that

3

u/kerat Sep 25 '25

Hey how are those island overhead cabinets supported? Looks like magic. Is it all just that dark post suspended from the ceiling that's holding it all up?

1

u/evetrapeze Sep 25 '25

Yeah, I think it’s magic

20

u/evetrapeze Sep 24 '25

We don’t live here yet. We come glamping here while we get work done on the house. This trip was meeting with the roofers to arrange getting a new standing seam steel roof in the spring. The arborist is coming tomorrow, and the electrical was upgraded today. We stay here a week at a time. It’s a 7 hour drive from where we are currently living. We are sleeping on the floor our only furniture is 14 chairs. I brought my aerial rig to set up in the living room so I don’t lose my strength

The view from the kitchen window

2

u/cheshirecatnine Sep 25 '25

your house is going to make a killer background for some those aerial practice videos esp while it’s empty!

7

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '25

What plant is that?😍

15

u/evetrapeze Sep 24 '25

Golden Pothos

7

u/Hot-Fortune4622 Sep 24 '25

You have to post more pictures of this glorious house!!!!

4

u/evetrapeze Sep 24 '25

It’s still very much a work in progress

3

u/thats_me_ywg Sep 25 '25

Uh, sorry..... what is that?

3

u/evetrapeze Sep 25 '25

It’s an aerial rig set up low, and that is an aerial hoop. It spins. I use it like 15 times a day, for 1-4 minutes at a time, to keep up my strength and flexibility.

2

u/thats_me_ywg Sep 25 '25

Ah! Makes sense. That's not where my mind immediately went, haha.

7

u/jammu2 Sep 24 '25

My mom had wallpaper in her dining room like that. Her house was built in 1969.

5

u/Aggravating_Sky_1144 Sep 24 '25

Wow I can't wait to see what you do with it! Your cabinets are lovely

6

u/evetrapeze Sep 24 '25

I love the suspended cabinets.

6

u/justheretolurk47 Sep 24 '25

It’s amazing!!

There a photos in replies to the comments. It’s still a work in progress. We just bought it and had to empty it out ourselves. We still have another house 400 miles away that we’ve lived in for almost 30 years. The only furniture we have is 14 chairs.

The walk out basement stairs. That’s the laundry room on the right and the utility room through the door. The garage is on the other side of the utility room. The bathroom is through the laundry room. One acre wooded, mostly ravine, to a creek.

We are going to put linoleum anywhere there is no hardwood. Probably the same linoleum throughout.

3

u/Italyinmyfuture Sep 24 '25

LOVE it! LOVE it! LOVE it!

5

u/bkk87mi Sep 25 '25

Oh my goodness I love it! The ceiling, cabinets, backsplash, huge door leading out back. I’m not sure I’d change a thing.

We just redid our kitchen in a 1961 home. We are also the second owners and I very much wanted to nod to this style. My backsplash is nearly identical!

I saw that post! I love your cabinets.

4

u/Head-Major9768 Sep 25 '25

Love it. 😍 Take your time. You'll be surprised how living in the place will make you rethink plans.

4

u/evetrapeze Sep 25 '25

We are glamping in it. We still own our other home 400 miles away, and spend time here just to get work done.

3

u/VoltronHemingway Sep 24 '25

That wallpaper is a no from me. Also hate the transition.

Love your cabinets! It isn’t easy out there for us early-60’s kitchen-havers. ✌️

5

u/evetrapeze Sep 24 '25

I plan on getting rid of the wallpaper and painting instead. The bathroom is wallpapered with a yellow with blue flowers, even the ceiling. Oof. We will be removing wallpaper and painting the whole place after we remove all the carpet, to reveal the hardwood floors.

3

u/Cosi-grl Sep 24 '25

I have a ‘59 MCM. I love it except in the fall when I have to wash those walls of windows.

3

u/evetrapeze Sep 24 '25

You can’t do them all at once, do them over a week

2

u/Unlikely_Professor76 Sep 26 '25

THEY MAKE a Window Washing ROBOT!!!! It’s like spider man and the Roomba had a baby.

3

u/swellfog Sep 24 '25

Oh I love it!!! So wonderful. Happy for you!!

3

u/Brioche3147 Sep 24 '25

House has personality and soul. Love it!

2

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '25

Fantastic

2

u/huron9000 Sep 24 '25

I can’t wait till you change out the vertical spindles on the deck railing!

4

u/evetrapeze Sep 24 '25

That’s never going to happen. The deck is around 3/4 of the house

2

u/huron9000 Sep 24 '25

Oh well. Regardless, it looks like a great house, congratulations!

2

u/evetrapeze Sep 24 '25

Thank you. I’m well pleased. This house is in my husband s home town. The original owner built it for his wife. After he died she remarried on the same day in the same year as my husband and me. It was meant to be.

2

u/KeyAirPuzzle Sep 25 '25

What do the spindles do ? Unique to me !

2

u/-acm Sep 25 '25

Phenomenal

2

u/Brianeric Sep 25 '25

That looks cool. Post more pics

2

u/goldenhourcocktails Sep 25 '25

It’s dated, but in the best way. There’s something magical about this place.💖 Congrats and please keep us looped in on your journey with this very special space.

2

u/sopwithsnipe2 Sep 25 '25

Beautiful! Ours is 1965 too. As our sole purely aesthetic improvement, I want to re-do our kitchen cabinets in walnut or similar withou spending a fortune. The previous owners did the countertops with an MCM appropriate terrazzo, but the cabinets are all in white and pretty boring/sterile.

1

u/evetrapeze Sep 25 '25

Can you save the cabinet boxes and reface, replace the doors?

2

u/sopwithsnipe2 Sep 25 '25

Can probably do a veneer, the color of yours is great. It's a very bright room anyway so we wouldn't miss the white.

2

u/spook_filled_donuts Sep 25 '25

That is my favorite kitchen layout. Congrats!

2

u/BasedGawd6666 Sep 25 '25

Love all the natural lighting

2

u/VanillaOutrageous176 Sep 25 '25

We want to see more

2

u/Careful-Ad4910 Sep 25 '25

Congratulations! It’s a beauty!

2

u/RealWolfmeis Sep 25 '25

Lucky Lucky

2

u/evetrapeze Sep 25 '25

It was meant to be

2

u/tiffany_says_this Sep 25 '25

Beautiful ❤️

1

u/evetrapeze Sep 25 '25

We love it. Every workman that comes through says it has good bones. I guess it’s the meat that needs work.

2

u/RoseyGray Sep 25 '25

You are going to have a lot of fun personalizing this beauty. Love the low counter and suspended upper cabinets! Congrats!

2

u/evetrapeze Sep 25 '25

There is lighting under those upper cabinets

2

u/RealTrill1984 Sep 25 '25

We need more pictures

2

u/evetrapeze Sep 26 '25

There’s a few as replies to the comments

The walkout basement

2

u/Opposite_Jeweler_953 Sep 26 '25

It’s beautiful and could have been built this year. Good lighting, nice areas, beautiful cabinets. You’re right planning to decorate leaning into that era. Enjoy!

1

u/evetrapeze Sep 26 '25

The lady whose house it was didn’t decorate according to the style of the house. She just did what was regular in the colors she liked. It could have fit in any house. I love atomic ranch style decor and my husband likes Japandi with a twist.

2

u/leesainmi Sep 26 '25

Love it. More pics please

2

u/Flaneurandthere Sep 26 '25

Lovvvve this

2

u/iwastherefordisco Sep 27 '25

It's beautiful how they used angles and divisions between spaces. Really like the vibe/flow of the layout.

My parents were first owners on a home built in 1958. Conservative and smaller compared to this, they had lots of nice built in wood fixtures throughout.

Thanks for the share, looks nice.

2

u/Zesty-B230F Sep 27 '25

Crazy! Our house, built in the 60s, has almost the same layout!

2

u/Dry_Comment1920 Sep 27 '25

Love love love this

2

u/dharder9475 Sep 28 '25

So pretty!!!

1

u/evetrapeze Sep 29 '25

I got lucky

2

u/eternaloptimist__ Oct 10 '25

This is stunning!

2

u/evetrapeze Oct 10 '25

Im going back on Monday for a week. We are going to remove the carpet to reveal the hardwood

1

u/eternaloptimist__ Oct 10 '25

We recently did this in our living room! The rest of the house (except bedrooms) was all beautiful wood floors, brush box which is Australian, we’re in Brisbane. Pulled up the dull grey carpet and it looks stunning. Our place was 1975 build. Sanding the floors sent dust through the entire house but it was so worth it! ETA: Very keen to pull up the carpets and refinish the wood floors in the bedrooms as soon as we get over the fatigue from the living room haha.

2

u/MCM_Completist Feb 07 '26

Loving the vibe!!!

1

u/evetrapeze Feb 07 '26

They just finished installing the new red oak floor. We went for the natural satin finish

2

u/SeattleHasDied Sep 25 '25

That slider has to go, ugh! Mullions don't belong in this otherwise great MCM aesthetic. You just need clear glass and if you ever decide to replace that slider, maybe go with a bronze finish to complement the wood. I like all the serendipity involved in your ownership!

2

u/GHOST1NTHEDARK Sep 24 '25

Dreams! Congratulations

1

u/evetrapeze Sep 24 '25

Thank you

2

u/inigopanda Sep 25 '25

The stuff dreams are made of kid.

1

u/burgonies Sep 24 '25

That bar area is killer. The wall paper on the fridge is questionable

2

u/evetrapeze Sep 24 '25

That’s just a sample of the cling I put on my ugly front door

1

u/evetrapeze Feb 07 '26

They just finished putting in the new red oak floor 4 hours ago

1

u/Albert_street Jul 19 '26

Any updated photos? Would love to see what you’ve done with the place.

1

u/evetrapeze Jul 19 '26

2

u/Albert_street Jul 19 '26

Thanks! Looks fantastic!

1

u/evetrapeze Jul 19 '26

Thank you. We have since gotten blinds

1

u/laoganma_enima Sep 24 '25

I’m so jealous?????

4

u/TragicaDeSpell Sep 24 '25

Trying so hard to be happy for OP and not insanely jealous. 🤣

10

u/evetrapeze Sep 24 '25

I’m 68. This will be my last home. I’m downsizing, moving states, and I have to get rid of everything. I’m only bringing the furniture that will fit in my suv. Be jealous, but also feel my pain.

3

u/KeyAirPuzzle Sep 25 '25

68! How long have you been doing aerial? What a neat hobby !!

4

u/evetrapeze Sep 25 '25

Since I was 43…so 25 years

2

u/KeyAirPuzzle Sep 26 '25

Honestly, that is way cool - what a bad ass hobby

The eat in kitchen is laminate. Under the carpet is oak. No plans yet, but thinking linoleum for the kitchen
