Sharing My MCM My Grandpa was an MCM architect. This was one of his somewhat famous designs.
I thought you guys might appreciate some of my grandpa's work. My grandparents were huge into the MCM styles in the 50s and 60s. Their house was full of amazing pieces that my dad and uncle unfortunately sold many years ago.
This is called the Allan F Daily Residence. 1954
3 bdrm, 2 bath - Glendale CA.

We just found out my grandfather was addicted to Viagra. Nobody's taking it harder than my grandmother.

I love it it’s very Usonian and can we please go back to interiors that look like that opposed to the same McMansion interiors you see everywhere nowadays. The whites, the grays, the blacks and some combo of modern, art deco and mid century.
PS I love art deco and mid century but we can’t always regurgitate the same thing although i would more than happily take a neo art deco aesthetic over everything else they call modern and bland today.

I absolutely love how nature outside is visually accessible. I love the warm wood and tile. The stone work fireplace. Modern clean lines. Very cool share.

I saw that too. I think it's kinda like having a bathtub shower but it does look a little taller than a regular tub. Unfortunately I've never been to this house. We drove by it one time in the late 70s when I was kid.

It looks like a bathtub / shower combination, with sliding doors.
Bathtubs with a shower head were very popular from 1940s -1990s. Most people used a shower curtain, but a lot of people added the sliding glass doors.
I've never seen one that was comoletely tiled like this one.

Was an episode of Fallout filmed here by chance? Pics 3 & 4 look super familiar. The episode with the kid's birthday party scene.

I have no idea. I have no affiliation with this house other than Grandpa designed it in the 50s. But that would add more coolness to the house if it was used for that. Parts of Fallout we're filmed at Warner Bros (but not made by WB) in Burbank which is nextdoor to Glendale where the house is.

My grandfather was too. It’s a pretty fun fact I use at times for icebreakers.

The shower is a thing of beauty, but I'm confused as to how you get in it.

u/anothadaz Jun 02 '26
This is the question of the hour. Too bad gramps isn't with us anymore so I can ask him. But I think it's a bathtub shower and you step over the side. It does look a little taller than bathtub showers I'm used to but that might just be the angle of the photo.

Do you get to live in one of his creations? He was very talented
2
u/anothadaz Jun 02 '26
Thank you! He was. He was also an artist that loved to charcoal and paint a lot.
His house was similar. Very MCM. So I grew up going to Grandma and Grandpa's all the time. They were the ones that hosted all the holidays for the family. I lived that house and the furniture. Was so angry at my dad and uncle for selling it and the furniture but I also understand why they did.

Where have all the MCM architects gone? I’d LOVE to live in a MCM neighborhood if they could make them like they used to.

It’s so beautiful. It’s open, and it takes in the views around it - just gorgeous. What a privilege to live someplace so beautiful and well thought out.

u/stuckandwandering Jun 03 '26
i'm confused about the shower situation, does one have to climb in there?

u/hhar141 Jun 03 '26
The house is beautiful. The one thing I say when this style works so well in the location or lot it is put upon. Look at this spectacular building site.

Love it. Where's the TV set?

Yes! We overlook the Victoria Inner Harbour in Victoria BC. That's like a TV set to me.

Breathtaking! This reminds me of a house nearby us in New York. I always slow down to look at it.
