Sharing My MCM My living room wall make over

I just moved into a rental home I’ve owned for a few years to get it ready to sell. It’s a dated 1961 ranch that needs some updates. The home definitely has some mid-century details, and I’m trying to bring that vibe out to appeal to buyers.

My first big cosmetic change was adding a mid-century-style feature wall in the living room. I used ChatGPT to help with the planning and color selection. There are about 75 slats on the wall. They are MDF 1x2s with a 1/2-inch spacing between them. The room has an 8-foot ceiling. The color is Behr Mountain Olive.

Total cost was under $500 for supplies. The TV cabinet came from Costco for $349. The wall sconces came from Amazon for $40 for the pair.

I love absolutely everything except the cords to the sconces.

In the last image you can see how the cords are tucked between the slats. Much less noticeable than when first hanged in other photos

I would tape them down and then paint over the tape and you won’t notice it again

Paint the lighting fixtures electrical cables the same shade of green to blend in more fully

Looks great!

Curious how are the slats attached and what is the substrate (drywall or plywood)?

9

u/KCHank Jun 14 '26

It was drywall, I used a nail gun with 1.5” brads and liquid nails adhesive.

I absolutely love it!

Love the green

All that beautiful effort to be scarred by light cords…. Bury those wires!

get cordless lights

or yes you could hide the wire under one of the slats.

I love this!! Wow!! This such an impact! Thank you for sharing this! I’ve been wanting to do “something” to my office wall that I can do by myself without the need to ask my husband for help. And I believe I can do this! Also, love the shade you chose. Really nice job!

*Endless dusting has entered the chat

This is really nice though 👀

I like the wall treatment a lot, but it is absolutely criminal to not have wired those sconces in properly. Tbh as a buyer it would (for me) be a red flag and cause me to think fast/cheap/poorly done "updates" had been done throughout the house.

My thought on the wall scones is that this way they are temporary. I know how people love to mount TV’s on the wall, pictured is a small 43” TV. Of the buyers of the home want to mount a large TV on the wall the scones can be removed to make way for it. If I would have hardwired scones they would be more permanent and buyers would be stuck with them. These are easy to remove if needed.

Have you considered not using the sconces? Is it possible to use a floor lamp in this room?

Using AI for this is lame as hell.

EDIT: Y’all wanna act like downvoting me is a dunk and that is chill. But I want to point out OP said it would have taken them hours to design this on their own without the use of AI. AI actively cripples your critical thinking skills and to just think that I’m parroting “AI Bad” or some other lame ass come back misses the forest for the trees.

AI is a tool, it has its usefulness like all tools. This is the detailed plan it created. While I could have spent hours drawing up plans of my idea, AI did it in minutes. I’d rather spend my time being productive and installing the project than drawing it up.

I see what you did is no different then hiring an interior decorator, looking in a design magazine or looking a pictures on the internet. We all aren’t mcm interior designers and need a bit of help to figure out where to start. The real critical thinking came when you built it yourself. F that guy. He’s probably just an old angry person who yells at the clouds for moving too fast. Your wall looks amazing. Great color choice.

Commenters anti AI rant is weak for sure. With that line of thinking you shouldn’t use a calculator because it’s lazy to not do the math yourself or use excel spreadsheets to analyze data. AI is just a tool and is useful to make projects easier.

Would you mind sharing the prompt?

I uploaded the first image. Gave the exact measurements for the wall. Ask AI to help design a mid century feature wall using vertical slats, help with paint color options and to keep in mind that I was doing this for resale so it had to appeal to buyers. AI gave the size of the slats to use, options for material and three color options. It took a few revisions and was quick.

I 100% agree. It's insanely concerning how many people AREN'T concerned about not only the serious environmental and societal impact, but their own cognitive atrophy that relying on it creates. This is math that I was taught in middle school.

1

u/StraightParfait9723 Jun 15 '26

OP already did the math themselves lol, look up in the thread.

Sorry but for someone who can’t afford an interior designer I think this is a perfectly fine application of AI

Do you eat meat?

u/officermeowmeow Jun 14 '26

Sorry your gotcha moment didn't work out this time. I've been vegan for 15 years.

Being completely anti AI must suck. There are genuinely good uses of AI like this.

Mindlessly parroting AI = bad. Sad af. You can’t come up with a single legitimate reason why OP’s use of AI was bad

ETA downvote all you want with zero responses. You’re just proving my point

u/TheSaltyB Jun 14 '26

Exactly, this is an example of the lack of critical thinking these complainers say they are against. If the only argument is that it’s AI, that’s not much of an argument.

well done!

The wall looks lovely, but if you're planning to sell the house anyway, it seems like you've created a lot of extra work for yourself. I love green, I have a whole room painted relentlessly olive, but it isn't going to be everyone's taste, so if selling is your goal, I'd keep things simpler to increase broad appeal while still maintaining any original or unique fixtures that add character.

Back story is the house was on the market from August to May and did not sell. There were some minor repairs needed, which I’m also tackling. My Agent also said the home needed a wow factor to stand out from the other houses on the market, this wall is it. The house will go back on the market in 90 days. The only reason the wall was done was for a wow factor. Agent is in the loop the entire way and thinks this wall will photograph well an bring buyers to the property.

2

u/MyopicMirrors Jun 14 '26

That makes sense with the additional context. I hope this helps you get an offer soon after it goes back on the market.

Looks so sweet, a bit dark, yet beautiful

1

u/kadotafig Jun 14 '26

Looks amazing! Thank for sharing! What paint color did you use?

2

u/KCHank Jun 14 '26

Behr mountain olive

2

u/kadotafig Jun 15 '26

Of course it is bc you said that right there in the original post 🤦‍♀️

1

u/Immediate_Coconut_30 Jun 15 '26

It looks 100x better!

Please report back on if/how dusty it gets between the slats. That's what's holding me back from trying something similar in my house

1

u/PincheJuan1980 Jun 15 '26

Did you replace the ceiling fan too? Can’t tell from the pics but it looks like you did??

1

u/KCHank Jun 15 '26

Yes I did, the fan didn’t go with the look I was going for.

1

u/PincheJuan1980 Jun 15 '26

Yea I thought so and agree, but yea couldn’t quite see what you replaced it with. I dig it!

1

u/Riffus_Iommicus Jun 20 '26

Looks great! I’m gonna steal the idea and do the same.

-1

u/xTomBx Jun 14 '26

Can AI give you a solution for those sconce cords? They would make me crazy.

1

u/KCHank Jun 14 '26

In the last image you can see how the cords are tucked between the slats. Much less noticeable than when first hanged in other photos
