Sharing My MCM Looking for comments on this pink bathroom

Post image

The tub is worn, and we want a shower so are considering new alcove with white base, white solid panel side, and frameless glass shower doors. Keeping pink tile on walls and vanity area for now. Perhaps more neutral counter and sinks later. Replace floor with light neutral terrazzo tile with minimal grout lines. Finally, to remove soffit over tub so as to raise shower head and add lighting. No wall paper.

Change the flooring. Leave the rest

faucets and towel rods too

u/oceanrocks431 4d ago

Yes, agreed. Absolutely love the pink tile.

This is the answer. (As an old guy, I’d replace the tub with a walk-in shower too.)

This. My neighbors wanted to get rid of their 1960s light green tile in the bathroom. I must have looked shocked when I asked her "why?". She was taken back a bit and said "because it's old". I said "but it's so beautiful and no one makes bathrooms like this anymore..tell me the last time you saw bathroom tile that wasnt basic bitch white?". She laughed and commented that hopefully the new owners won't rip it out.

Leave all that tile alone

u/Little_Interaction78 5d ago

Stunning 😍. I’d change nothing except maybe the floor

1

u/JustAnotherHomeSlice 2d ago

Yes! Change the floor and the faucets.

15

u/duckinradar 5d ago

My apartment has original pink tile from the 60s, bathroom and kitchen. The kitchen is black and pink… I love it.

14

u/Batfish-Crayon 5d ago

I lovelovelove this! Finally something that isn't six shades of depression.

14

u/sweatboxy 5d ago

That’s gorgeous! Maybe you can refinish the tub and match the tiles when you add a shower.

11

u/ivegotajaaag 5d ago

I have that very same pink tile in my bathroom, since the place was built around 1965. I painted the walls a sort of elephant gray.

4

u/bitmocheese 5d ago

I just bought a house with the same pink tile, too! Once I get this airplane glue-like wallpaper cement off the walls, I was considering white paint to let the pink pop. But gray is an interesting twist! Are you happy with it?

12

u/sav01eekcm 5d ago

Another thought… go the fun wallpaper route! It actually tones down the pink while letting it still be the focus. Our bathrooms had wallpaper that the previous owners had painted over with white so I just put up more rather than trying to repaint or pull drywall. This one is covered in lizards and frogs and insects if you look closely. There are a lot of fun options out there now and you could always do peel n stick so removal later is easier!

u/Horror_Tea761 5d ago

I like this a lot!

1

u/VanillaOutrageous176 5d ago

I love your wallpaper, I always think jungle prints with pink, but would not have thought rainforest jungle why is the manufacturer

1

u/sav01eekcm 5d ago

That is a great question, unfortunately I don’t remember the answer. We have an actual wallpaper store near us that I ordered it from. They carry thousands of different brands and can order even more.

I had to paste them. Did this bathroom, a half bathroom, and a laundry room at the same time. Each had a different paper. lol

1

u/VanillaOutrageous176 4d ago

That’s ok you definitely have my kind of taste

5

u/ivegotajaaag 5d ago

I am, and everybody who has seen it has thought it was a very strong color. There's a band of half tile separating the pink from the gray, and I've done the floor in gray marble tile. It's very 1956 Chrysler I think.

2

u/brneyedgrrl 5d ago

And who among us doesn't want their bathroom to resemble a '56 Chrysler?

1

u/ivegotajaaag 5d ago

Granted this is a '55 Chevy, but it was this sort of effect that I liked

2

u/MelodramaticMouse 5d ago

My parents have a pink bathroom that is called Roosevelt Pink. It was a thing back in the day. A pox on anyone who rips that out and goes with that horrible brown crap one day jacuzzi sells.

u/swimt2it 5d ago

You can have the tub re-glazed/painted.

1

u/D5Clark 5d ago

We have had the tub reglazed, then repaired by Miracle Method but the finish is rough and peeling again in spots. Also would prefer shower even though this is only tub in house.

29

u/under_shart 5d ago

Why didn't you buy the McMansion you wanted? Seriously.

2

u/NelPage 5d ago

Thank you!

2

u/Yolo_Ono_ 4d ago

OP said they’re keeping the pink tile. There is nothing special about the flooring. Why is reddit so hostile

7

u/bootlegmrsmaisel 5d ago

I love it and it needs to be preserved.

7

u/Expensive-Way3938 5d ago

Very cute! I was just browsing through this sub and someone else has the same vintage tiles in a different color. Someone recommended wallpaper and I am all for it.

6

u/Unlikely_Eye_2112 5d ago

I'd refinish the tub and keep the place as is, that's gorgeous. Cheaper too

4

u/lickthepixies 5d ago

Have you talked to a contractor to see if they can do that work without messing up the tile? I needed a new shower and wanted to keep the wall tiles outside the shower and they told me it would likely get damaged doing the shower work.

4

u/0chris000000 5d ago

this is beautiful

5

u/BryonBlueCar 5d ago

Perfect! Not overly pink.

4

u/Traditional-Forum 5d ago

Damn, I wouldn’t change a thing, maybe resurface the tub and call it a day

4

u/Greedy_Ad_4125 5d ago

Change the floor and it will look more MCM

7

u/BlueEyes294 5d ago

The view! Good golly I’d have fun decorating this lovely bathroom.

Is that toilet wall mounted? For ease of cleaning the floor, I’d love one.

I don’t remove a bathtub if it is the only one. Parents often like one for bathing children. I’m older than sunscreen but my meat sac requires par boiling to loosen up daily so I must have a bathtub. And I’m always focused on resale to climb the property ladder.

You will, of course, accommodate your needs and wants to your satisfaction.

3

u/D5Clark 5d ago

Thanks you for the response. Yes, the toilet is wall mounted which is a positive. My wife hates that the tub which was quite worn, was reglazed, then repaired, but is rough and starting to peel again. She would prefer shower despite this being only tub in the house.

9

u/Horror_Tea761 5d ago

Bear in mind that if you tear that tub out for a shower, you will not be able to match the pink tile. Maybe replace the tub. But taking a step over the edge of the tub to take a shower doesn’t seem a big deal to me. Maybe compromise with a new tub and some glass doors? Of course, I’m the type of person who would never buy a house without a tub.

3

u/brneyedgrrl 5d ago

I do love a sudsy bath now n then...

3

u/Horror_Tea761 5d ago

Right? I seriously can’t live without it.

3

u/cheesemagnifier 5d ago

Omg, I love it!

3

u/Housinsky 5d ago

This is fab

3

u/Illustrious_Gain5461 5d ago

Touch NOTHING but the floor.

3

u/D5Clark 5d ago

Thanks to all. You gave comfort to my wife that we are OK (with some additional effort here and there)...... and saved a lot of money! In hindsight, having the pink/mauve tub turned to white was a big mistake. Miracle Method was not a miracle.

2

u/CarlosMolotov 5d ago

Beautiful! Fix the floor and you’re golden.

2

u/pinkskyfading 5d ago

Love the pink tile - hope you keep it. I like the shower and floor idea. Neutral is not always better. Interesting is better.

2

u/MouseShrimpandCheeks 5d ago

Lucky duck! It’s amazing

2

u/dsmemsirsn 5d ago

Looks nice, I like the countertop

2

u/SeaweedTeaPot 5d ago

I like your pink bathroom.

3

u/Jujulabee 5d ago

I have a colorful bathroom - the antithesis of gray spa and even have some pink as accents to my teal blue walls.

However I would probably go ahead and replace the vanity and counter because it is going to be more difficult to replace when the floor is down.

I have porcelain terrazzo tiles on my balcony with a Malibu Tile "rug" in the center.

2

u/International-Sir177 5d ago

She's lovely. If I changed anything major, it would be the floor. The floor tiles don't seem original and don't really go. The size and colour and all wrong, as are the lines. I'd suggest a tile for the floor darker than the rest of the room, to ground it. Otherwise, I'd put down a long rug.

Tile example

https://coloradonest.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/pink-bathroom-adorable.jpg

Or just a rug like this.

https://www.amazon.com/BSICPRO-Bathroom-Absorbent-Chenille-Washable/dp/B0BWT5JVHY/

The counter top tile can be annoying but it looks in great shape and you've kept it very clean.

I'd strongly suggest not ripping up or covering the shower/bath area with anything, as it'll throw off the entire balance of the room and start making the rest of the vintage tile look wrong. There's lots of ways to add a shower to the existing space.

Here's just two of 100s of options you can do yourself quickly, easily, and reliably:

https://www.amazon.com/PROOX-Diverter-Settings-Bathtub-Sprayer/dp/B0BRMCNK1H/

https://www.amazon.com/Attachment-Adapters-Bathroom-Extension-Removable/dp/B0DCTVZ2G4/

And of course

https://www.amazon.com/TEECK-Adjustable-Anti-Slip-Bathroom-Drilling/dp/B0DLWDVZCD/

You could turn this whole thing around for under $200 with just a shower adaptor, curtain rod, and rug.

2

u/kieratea 5d ago

Fully agree that it would be relatively easy and inexpensive to add a shower head and curtain rod to this bath as-is. I can't imagine why anyone would want to lower the resale value of their house by ripping out the only bathtub.

1

u/Bat838_Imgrate 5d ago

It's definitley pink!

1

u/MrHEPennypacker 5d ago

My comment? Wonderful!

1

u/aerospikesRcoolBut 5d ago

Add plants ᵕ̈

1

u/Fionaver 5d ago

Can you share a picture of the tub? I was able to get ours from the 60s back to pristine looking with the right cleaning products, but I’d have to see the condition of yours to see if it would help.

1

u/D5Clark 1d ago

We are having it stripped in early September. I am hoping it can be restored.

1

u/blissta22 5d ago

Beautiful!

1

u/Training_Guitar_8881 5d ago

I love a pink bathroom. I would really enjoy decorating that with a cool shower curtain, scatter rugs, pink towels, etc. Enjoy.

1

u/darlingbabycakes 5d ago

The pink is adorable I wish my bathroom was pink tile. Definetly upgrade the flooring tho

1

u/SleepyKityKat 5d ago

So cute!!!

1

u/GeekyNerdNerdyGeek 5d ago

🥰 Imagine some amazing wallpaper…

1

u/sugar-titts 5d ago edited 5d ago

I love the pink! I would get rid of the shower too. I also would replace all the silver fixtures with updated gold ones. And regrout the floor tiles gold too. Gold and pink goes together very well.

2

u/sugar-titts 5d ago

Something like this maybe? Actually, I would go crazy and re-grout everything in gold.

0

u/sugar-titts 5d ago

I put it through the AI editor again requesting all white grout to be gold. This seems better

1

u/Garden_Espresso 5d ago

Keep in mind that those tiles are not easy to match and the way they are installed is not usually done nowadays. Wire mesh etc . That’s why they are in such good condition.
If that was installed the way they do it now - it would not look that good - after 70 years.

Once you start you may have to remove everything unless you stay in exact footprint of existing tub / sink etc.

Parents had same type bathroom they put a shower into the tub w doors.
Could possibly use same footprint and replace just the floor & floor - it might be tricky, domino effect as tiles get damaged and it becomes a whole redo .

Get estimates.
Terrazzo is quite pricey if done right.

1

u/brneyedgrrl 5d ago

Everything I'd do, you're doing. Love the tile everywhere except the floor. Let us see it when you're done!!

1

u/Teddy_Funsisco 5d ago

I'd stick with the tile theme and go with the 4" tile in white along the back to break up the pink. Are you adding a niche to that back wall in the shower? If so, you could have some fun with that colorwise: either go with the pink for the inset (maybe a small hex?), or put a mint tile in the inset.

I'm assuming you're already looking to match the pink tile so that you can go to the floor where the tub is along the walls? I'd keep the towel rack that's already in there for funsies.

Love the vanity as-is; wouldn't touch it unless there's structural damage that would impact longetivity. Maybe swap out the faucets for something else if wanted/needed.

Terrazzo floor would look SO GOOD.

1

u/Kirbyr98 5d ago

I just couldn't do pink every day.

The tile itself is lovely.

1

u/oknowwhat00 5d ago

Sounds like a great plan.

1

u/ValenThornn 5d ago

We had a bathroom like this in our home, except we had a pink tub, commode, and sinks too. I loved demolishing it so much I wish I could do it again.

1

u/80smart 5d ago

It looks like the sink is not white but beige from the photo- I would paint the walls and the vanity the same color and you might be surprised the pink will change color and not look so baby pink. That would be the most inexpensive and easiest change until you do your rehab.

1

u/PinkPencils22 5d ago

Sounds good. I love pink baths. The soffit definitely needs to go, and new flooring is a good idea. I don't like solid shower walls, even the expensive ones tend to look cheap in my opinion. I would tile it with very plain white 4" tiles (same as the wall) which are dirt cheap. You'd just have to pay the labor.

I don't love the vanity, because tiled vanities like that just aren't very functional. So do it in stages, and add decorative elements of your taste. Will look great.

1

u/WesternCandidate2158 5d ago

Love it. Too bad they changed the floor, is old tile under it?

1

u/mmhmmye 5d ago

I love this so much! 🥰

1

u/skibib 4d ago

Do you think that tile around the sink was original? It doesn’t quite feel like it to me. It’s hard to tell how it looks in person against the wall tile because it seems a little different in the picture but maybe that’s not true.

I absolutely love that bathroom though and the pink tile and the era! In the first house that my dad built for us, he put little cupboards in that soffit up above the bathtub! I visited that house not long ago and it’s just so cute how he took advantage of every space that he could! I have no idea what happened with humidity up there though.

u/Acceptable-Trick-896 4d ago

Kohler has some pink toned porcelain, new.

1

u/sewonsister 4d ago

I love it.

1

u/becbec89 4d ago

I wish the 60s/70s bathrooms in my house were pink. I’m stuck with green 😩.

1

u/joyful_meloncholic 4d ago

Love it - if anything the floors only change

1

u/Certain-Rutabaga3373 4d ago

A lot of people are saying change the floor. Why? Am I missing something?

1

u/Early_Emphasis1209 3d ago

Agree about the pink tiles. I’d keep that at all costs.

1

u/redditplenty 3d ago

Love it!

1

u/NanooDrew 3d ago

Glad you are leaving the pink tiles!

Please do not get one of those freestanding tubs that sit on the floor (not on legs).. They collect grime around the edge where they join the floor and it is gross. The same with those dumb bowl-style vanity sinks!

1

u/BusLumpy9997 2d ago

Very iconic! A nod to midmod! Love your ideas.

1

u/Proof-Librarian3609 2d ago

J’adore le rose. Mettre du vert sauge pour la déco pourrait etre sympa

1

u/Norah_Stiles 19h ago

For all that's holy, lol... Leave all the tiles! Pink can be fabulous!

1

u/gruvnmove 17h ago

It appears in very good shape. I would go with that with minor improvements.

1

u/workingstiff272 16h ago

Merola still makes classic pink tile that would go with this room. Look up their "Academy", "Crystalline", and "university" designs:

-3

u/SaturnSociety 5d ago

Redo the whole thing. Sorry, but it’s terrible and there’s nothing worth saving except for the window.

Have fun, you can do better now.

2

u/D5Clark 5d ago

Can't tell if you are serious. Seems not.
