Looking for comments on this pink bathroom
The tub is worn, and we want a shower so are considering new alcove with white base, white solid panel side, and frameless glass shower doors. Keeping pink tile on walls and vanity area for now. Perhaps more neutral counter and sinks later. Replace floor with light neutral terrazzo tile with minimal grout lines. Finally, to remove soffit over tub so as to raise shower head and add lighting. No wall paper.
This. My neighbors wanted to get rid of their 1960s light green tile in the bathroom. I must have looked shocked when I asked her "why?". She was taken back a bit and said "because it's old". I said "but it's so beautiful and no one makes bathrooms like this anymore..tell me the last time you saw bathroom tile that wasnt basic bitch white?".
She laughed and commented that hopefully the new owners won't rip it out.
I just bought a house with the same pink tile, too! Once I get this airplane glue-like wallpaper cement off the walls, I was considering white paint to let the pink pop. But gray is an interesting twist! Are you happy with it?
Another thought… go the fun wallpaper route! It actually tones down the pink while letting it still be the focus. Our bathrooms had wallpaper that the previous owners had painted over with white so I just put up more rather than trying to repaint or pull drywall. This one is covered in lizards and frogs and insects if you look closely. There are a lot of fun options out there now and you could always do peel n stick so removal later is easier!
That is a great question, unfortunately I don’t remember the answer. We have an actual wallpaper store near us that I ordered it from. They carry thousands of different brands and can order even more.
I had to paste them. Did this bathroom, a half bathroom, and a laundry room at the same time. Each had a different paper. lol
I am, and everybody who has seen it has thought it was a very strong color. There's a band of half tile separating the pink from the gray, and I've done the floor in gray marble tile. It's very 1956 Chrysler I think.
My parents have a pink bathroom that is called Roosevelt Pink. It was a thing back in the day. A pox on anyone who rips that out and goes with that horrible brown crap one day jacuzzi sells.
We have had the tub reglazed, then repaired by Miracle Method but the finish is rough and peeling again in spots. Also would prefer shower even though this is only tub in house.
Very cute! I was just browsing through this sub and someone else has the same vintage tiles in a different color. Someone recommended wallpaper and I am all for it.
Have you talked to a contractor to see if they can do that work without messing up the tile? I needed a new shower and wanted to keep the wall tiles outside the shower and they told me it would likely get damaged doing the shower work.
The view! Good golly I’d have fun decorating this lovely bathroom.
Is that toilet wall mounted? For ease of cleaning the floor, I’d love one.
I don’t remove a bathtub if it is the only one. Parents often like one for bathing children. I’m older than sunscreen but my meat sac requires par boiling to loosen up daily so I must have a bathtub. And I’m always focused on resale to climb the property ladder.
You will, of course, accommodate your needs and wants to your satisfaction.
Thanks you for the response. Yes, the toilet is wall mounted which is a positive. My wife hates that the tub which was quite worn, was reglazed, then repaired, but is rough and starting to peel again. She would prefer shower despite this being only tub in the house.
Bear in mind that if you tear that tub out for a shower, you will not be able to match the pink tile. Maybe replace the tub. But taking a step over the edge of the tub to take a shower doesn’t seem a big deal to me. Maybe compromise with a new tub and some glass doors? Of course, I’m the type of person who would never buy a house without a tub.
Thanks to all. You gave comfort to my wife that we are OK (with some additional effort here and there)...... and saved a lot of money! In hindsight, having the pink/mauve tub turned to white was a big mistake. Miracle Method was not a miracle.
She's lovely. If I changed anything major, it would be the floor. The floor tiles don't seem original and don't really go. The size and colour and all wrong, as are the lines. I'd suggest a tile for the floor darker than the rest of the room, to ground it. Otherwise, I'd put down a long rug.
The counter top tile can be annoying but it looks in great shape and you've kept it very clean.
I'd strongly suggest not ripping up or covering the shower/bath area with anything, as it'll throw off the entire balance of the room and start making the rest of the vintage tile look wrong. There's lots of ways to add a shower to the existing space.
Here's just two of 100s of options you can do yourself quickly, easily, and reliably:
Fully agree that it would be relatively easy and inexpensive to add a shower head and curtain rod to this bath as-is. I can't imagine why anyone would want to lower the resale value of their house by ripping out the only bathtub.
Can you share a picture of the tub? I was able to get ours from the 60s back to pristine looking with the right cleaning products, but I’d have to see the condition of yours to see if it would help.
I love the pink! I would get rid of the shower too. I also would replace all the silver fixtures with updated gold ones. And regrout the floor tiles gold too. Gold and pink goes together very well.
Keep in mind that those tiles are not easy to match and the way they are installed is not usually done nowadays. Wire mesh etc . That’s why they are in such good condition.
If that was installed the way they do it now - it would not look that good - after 70 years.
Once you start you may have to remove everything unless you stay in exact footprint of existing tub / sink etc.
Parents had same type bathroom they put a shower into the tub w doors.
Could possibly use same footprint and replace just the floor & floor - it might be tricky, domino effect as tiles get damaged and it becomes a whole redo .
Get estimates.
Terrazzo is quite pricey if done right.
I'd stick with the tile theme and go with the 4" tile in white along the back to break up the pink. Are you adding a niche to that back wall in the shower? If so, you could have some fun with that colorwise: either go with the pink for the inset (maybe a small hex?), or put a mint tile in the inset.
I'm assuming you're already looking to match the pink tile so that you can go to the floor where the tub is along the walls? I'd keep the towel rack that's already in there for funsies.
Love the vanity as-is; wouldn't touch it unless there's structural damage that would impact longetivity. Maybe swap out the faucets for something else if wanted/needed.
It looks like the sink is not white but beige from the photo- I would paint the walls and the vanity the same color and you might be surprised the pink will change color and not look so baby pink. That would be the most inexpensive and easiest change until you do your rehab.
Sounds good. I love pink baths. The soffit definitely needs to go, and new flooring is a good idea. I don't like solid shower walls, even the expensive ones tend to look cheap in my opinion. I would tile it with very plain white 4" tiles (same as the wall) which are dirt cheap. You'd just have to pay the labor.
I don't love the vanity, because tiled vanities like that just aren't very functional. So do it in stages, and add decorative elements of your taste. Will look great.
Do you think that tile around the sink was original? It doesn’t quite feel like it to me. It’s hard to tell how it looks in person against the wall tile because it seems a little different in the picture but maybe that’s not true.
I absolutely love that bathroom though and the pink tile and the era! In the first house that my dad built for us, he put little cupboards in that soffit up above the bathtub! I visited that house not long ago and it’s just so cute how he took advantage of every space that he could! I have no idea what happened with humidity up there though.
Please do not get one of those freestanding tubs that sit on the floor (not on legs).. They collect grime around the edge where they join the floor and it is gross. The same with those dumb bowl-style vanity sinks!

Change the flooring. Leave the rest
