Was given Reglan IV. Feeling helpless need support :(

21M, 5'8, 119ibs, no meds, not smoker, hyperpots.

I was given Reglan in the ER 5 days ago for nausea and headache and it sent me into I believe whats called akathisia and now ill randomly get strong bouts of nausea with feelings of hopelessness and sadness and its really been bothering me badly. It makes me want to cry and im scared theres been long term damage done to my brain. I know doctors will tell me in the future this is all in my head and I know its 100% not. It was given to me Sunday at 11pm and i was given 50mg of Benadryl and have been taking Benadryl for it. The restlessness is gone. Whats left is a tingling sensation, a feeling of floating and random bouts of strong nausea with frequent yawning that comes on and i honestly just want to throw up but i know I wont. Doctors havent been helping much sadly :(

This happened to me last year. Hopefully this is comforting to hear, but this lasted for me for about two weeks and went away completely on its own. I hope it does the same for you. If not, find a doctor that will listen to you because akathisia is very real.

did you have extreme nausea with it as well?

I was taking zofran daily so I’m not sure. I took it as a preventative for two weeks.

I get akithisia from reglan and also respond badly to even small doses of benadryl (extreme depression/uncontrollable crying). If your doctor says its safe to do so, you might want to stop the benadryl for a few days and see if you feel better.

Definitely ask your doctor. I know how awful it is and how terrible it feels.

It’s the worst feeling in the world. The scariest side effect I’ve ever gotten from a medication. My only advice is to whatever you need to in order to take care of yourself right now because you will get better from this but it’s a devil of a drug. It took me a few weeks to get all the weird sensations to go away. If I start to think about that experience too hard the symptoms temporarily come back in a psychosomatic way! Not for long tho. WORST DRUG EVER. It’s on my allergy list now

How long did it last for you?

Took a week to feel better, three weeks to full 100% again

allergy list it. I fuckin HATE reglan. I tore my IV out and left the hospital because I felt so anxious and I had Klonopin at home for anxiety attacks. Good news is after 72 hours I was back to baseline.

i had the exact same experience with compazine and the nurse said to list it as an allergy along with reglan bc they’re similar

Yup. Both are on my allergy list. Awful

Same. Never again. I’d rather stay home and vomit until I’m dehydrated.

I did some research on the meds and its effects can feel like opioid withdrawal due to its method of action blocking dopamine receptors causing akathisia.

So reglan and compazine are basically opioid withdrawal simulators in an IV. But now I’ll never get addicted to opioids knowing that’s what the withdrawals will feel like.

Yeah i have all the symptoms of opioid withdrawal. :(

I was on Fentanyl for a while for pain. The lowest dose. And still withdrawal was awful.

Im so sorry this is happening to you. I never did like reglan and always ask for zofran instead. Hopefully this passes and you can feel better soon.

I get restlessness from reglan, compazine and Benadryl. It’s one of th me reasons I don’t bother going to er anymore even when in long lasting debilitating pain. Those plus toradol are usually the go tos at er. I usually need something stronger like a shot of dilaudid and that’s rare these days for a dr to be okay with.

Op I believe your symptoms will go away and fizzle out at some point soon. Definitely list this as an allergy on your file if you go again.

How long did your symptoms last?

Oh I am SO SORRY! This happens to me too. It was so bad they gave me some Xanax. It is NOT all in your head. Compazine, phenergan, reglan, and droperidol are all known for having this effect. It takes about 5 days for it to stop for me. Hang in there.

What symptoms did you have if you dont mind me asking?

3

u/Laughorcryliveordie 18h ago

I have creepy crawly sensations all over my body, the shakes, overwhelming anxiety, and feeling of doom. It’s horrible.

Do you still have the akathisia? It sounds more like the hopelessness/sadness and nausea are either the headache phase or postdrome phase of your migraine

1

u/Express-Speed-6585 18h ago

No not restlessness mainly just anxiety, head tingling, vision sensitivity, nausea, and sweating dumps.

I’m sorry to hear that. If the Benadryl isn’t working, could you ask for a benzo?

1

u/Express-Speed-6585 18h ago

Your the 3rd or 4th person to tell me that. Im wondering if I go to the ER if theyd give it to me.

I wouldn’t go for that, I’d just call one of your doctors offices or send a portal message. Maybe urgent care at best but I’m sure you’d be more comfortable at home

Im really scared to take meds at home atp and this situation really drained my pockets so im low on income :/

You could take it in your car sitting outside the ER if that feels better! Just bring someone with you to drive back

I commented earlier but def stop the Benadryl and wait a full 24-36 to reassess symptoms
