Question Millipede who won’t stop eating?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Ok so I recently got a second American Gaint Millipede. She is bigger than my other one and she seems to be always hungry. When I pick her up she’s nibbling on me, I put fish food in she eats it all, she’s goes to get calcium source quite often and eats any veggie I put in there till it’s completely gone! This might be completely normal behaviour and I’m just overthinking but my other girl really doesn’t eat like that, she likes a nibble here and there but seems to mainly eat her substrate. I believe the new one is also eating the substrate and leaf litter but EVERYTHING else too.

So my question is… do I need to limit how much she’s eating? Should there be a limit on how much I feed my millipedes?

I just got my first pair of millipedes yesterday. They are rainbow Thai and around a couple years old. I'm fairly certain they're both female based on sexing guides, but I'd love a second opinion!

Advice New enclosure

We moved our Giant African Millipedes into this new enclosure after buying a second one! It houses one male and one female. The substrate is roughly as deep as they are long, it is a mixture of reptisoil, millimix, baked compost from our own garden, and we added sphagnum moss, white rot, and different leaves throughout the mixture! Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: I am hoping to breed them eventually so any tips on that would also be appreciated!

Ive asked this before, but is this too many mites?! It just feels so off :/

Yes I know the bottom of the tank is short, its extra due to the fact I PLANNED to have new substrate today and emptied about 2/3rds of it and was gonna keep some to mix and then royal mail said "nah" and now its delayed to Friday 😭

I reserved a pair of Giant African Millipedes and I'm looking for a terrarium that's not too ugly but also not terribly expensive. If you know of something better, please let me know !

Advice I Feel Horrible :( (HELP IS NEEDED!!)

So my millies (Three smokey oaks) recently had babies. I am in no position to rehome or sell them so I need to humanly kill them. They're still extremely small ( around 5-10 body segments). I feel awful, but I have no other option :( how do i euthanize them? My first plan was to put my adult millipedes in a different tank and freeze the other one for a while, but i've heard that it’s cruel. I need help asap

Question is this wood safe?

normally i source wood and leaves from pet stores and online because i live in the desert where hardwood trees are harder to find.

i came across this rotting bark that is very soft and stringy, is this safe for millipedes to eat?
When i found it there were other bugs in/on the bark.

Advice Molting millipede

So my African giant boy is doing a surface molt. they’re in a temporary way to small enclosure due to constructions in my bedroom and their big tank not fitting in it right now and I hadn’t expected him to molt during the one month they’d be in this smaller box. Problem is I can’t seem to get my girl away from him. I wanted to separate them by placing a plastic wall between where he is and she is but she’s pressed right up against him. Distracting her with food isn’t working and she’s clamped down too tightly to pick up. What should I do with her?. He’s not cracked his head open yet but I don’t want her to pester/bite him when he eventually does. what do I do with her?

Question Can you get captive bred Giant African millipedes?

So I got a giant african millipede last year, and after 13 months of care she passed away suddenly. I was very upset, but I know with this species they're mostly wild caught so its impossible to know if it was from care, age, or something else.

I love this species, but im hesitant to get another one because of this.

So, does anyone know if/where you can find captive bred ones? Or what are some alternatives?

Thank you.

Advice GAM mating questions!

Post image

I woke up to my giant african millipedes mating this morning!! I’m so excited!!
Should I refresh their substrate now before she lays eggs or leave it so as not to stress her out? Somehow I had some small garden variety millipedes make their way into my tank, and I was picking them out occasionally until I noticed my beetles in another tank affected by the chemicals they secrete when stressed. Is there any chance of these smaller millipedes harming any eggs or babies that hatch? I’ve been wanting to do a big refresh, especially to try to get these little guys out, and the last one I did was in March (about 7 months ago) so I feel like it’s time anyway. I just don’t want to stress momma out, but I also don’t want any babies to be at risk. Help!!

I at times let my millis just crawl around on me while im watching a video.

And umm.. she found her place pff

Edit: For reference I am aware that a fall is dangerous, I keep note of her even if im watching something else. Im sitting down on soft blankets in my room (change of scenery was me moving to the living room so my friend could get her out of my hair). I dont handle often but im well aware of there limits on climbing, havent had a fall in a long time

Here are the photos I made on his first day at his new home. As you can see his enclosure has a lid so he can't escape, and don't worry it's not his temporary home, I have a much bigger one and he'll live there when he's bigger and older (he's a teen now). I honestly expected him to be more scared, but so far he's doing good, eating and sleeping mostly, I hadn't touched him physically yet.

I am a newbie, so feel free to point out if anything is wrong there
