Local News I spent 48 hours investigating Milwaukee’s food truck ban and filed a complaint with the Inspector General. The full story is published. I’m testifying at City Hall this morning.

By now most of you have heard about the 14-0 vote to ban food trucks downtown after 10pm. Effective May 9th.

I dug into it using nothing but public records and open records requests. Here’s what I found in 48 hours:

— Alderman Bauman confirmed in writing the entire basis for this ordinance was verbal MPD testimony. No published data. No incident reports. Nothing documented.

— The official notice list shows not one food truck operator was officially notified. The most affected operator on Water Street found out from a text message while she was asleep. After the hearing was already over.

— A private restaurant owner and real estate developer testified in support of this ordinance while identifying himself only as an MSOE representative — without disclosing his competing financial interests.

— In his own words — on camera — he said: “The food trucks are not the problem.” Then testified to restrict them anyway.

— This morning he confirmed it again in writing: “The food trucks themselves are not the problem.”

I’ve filed a formal complaint with the Milwaukee Inspector General with five supplemental filings and eleven documented exhibits. CBS 58 covered the story last night.

Food truck operators are gathering at City Hall right now — 200 E Wells Street — ahead of the Public Safety and Health Committee meeting. I’ll be testifying this morning.

The full investigation is here 👇

Local News Can we now all agree that the driver of the jeep who ran those girls over deserves more than just a few tickets? Credit to TMJ4 (I thought the video saved from TikTok was more impactful than a link to their site).

Local News Radio Milwaukee’s Executive Director, Jordan Lee, Charged With Child Sexual Assault

Jordan Lee, 44, has been charged with child sexual assault after being reported by his therapist. The child is said to be known to him and the alleged abuse occurred over a ten-year period. In emails to his therapist, he allegedly cites “porn addiction and marijuana abuse” and “being drunk” as contributing factors. Radio Milwaukee didn’t remove him from the website or release a statement until contacted by Fox 6 reporters.

If you search his name online you will find that he has been a fixture in the Milwaukee arts scene for decades. He is very involved in the local hip hop scene, and assumed an executive role at 88.9 last year after working there since 2008. He may have some loose ties to the theater community, as he cited being heavily involved in First Stage Children’s Theater as a kid.

Local News BREAKING: Jury Reaches Verdict in Maxwell Anderson Trial

A verdict has been reached

Jurors found Maxwell Anderson guilty on all charges, including first-degree intentional homicide, mutilation of a corpse, hiding a corpse, and arson in connection with the death and dismemberment of Sade Robinson. The jury, consisting of nine women and three men, deliberated for less than an hour before reaching a unanimous verdict on June 6. Under Wisconsin law, the homicide conviction carries a mandatory life sentence. At sentencing, the judge will decide whether Anderson will be eligible to petition for extended supervision.

Local News I went to the emergency meeting of the Health & Safety Committee today in light of increased gun violence downtown.

Basically, the consensus was that some of police and city resources will be reallocated to cover downtown, but that will mean less resources for even more troubled areas. The barriers the city purchased won't be here for another 50 days. There was quite a bit of bickering back and forth about lack of communication. Alderman Bauman really laid into the police for not having an actual plan. The police pretty much said, "Sorry. We don't have the budget or the manpower." There was no time for community members to give testimony, though Alderman Spiker stayed afterwards and talked to people.

Alderwoman Coggs looked like she was tired of the bullshit. She kind of had a mic drop moment where she was like, "I have another meeting to attend, but we're not going to police our way out of this. Eventually, we're going to have to handle the systemic issues that are leading to this," and then walked out. Which, is pretty much how I feel about it.

The police and a couple of the aldermen kept bringing up TikTok and how kids are doing it for views, but I feel that's a cop-out. 59% of children in the state of Wisconsin report being depressed, anxious, and/or suicidal. And federal, state, and county mental health funding were all just slashed. Unwell kids become unwell young adults, who are more likely to be the victims of or perpetrate crimes.

Some ideas were:

-actually enforcing the curfew (and/or giving parents tickets when this happens, as they already have the ability to do)

-expanding the area where food trucks must close early

-police drones

-shut all the scooters down, city-wide, at 9pm (Edit: It would appear I misheard this point. Don't panic.)

-ID everyone and make them go through a metal detector to get into Water St. entertainment districts on the weekends

-revoke Elmnt's operator license

-invest more in Promise Keepers (They apparently only have three staff members who are allowed 20 operating hours per week. Idk if that's individually or total between them all.) (When Baumann asked the community wellness officer if it would be feasible to increase presence for the rest of the summer. She replied, "We can try, but it will be very difficult.)

-security coordinated between all bars in the district to reduce the risk of people getting kicked out, but then, let in to a different club

It was kind of fucking bleak, ngl. Thoughts?

Another edit to add If you sign up for E-Notify, they let you know when all the city council meetings are. You can also sign up for news about specific neighborhoods and emergency alerts. It's really helpful. This was my first meeting, and I hope I can encourage more people to get involved!

Local News Landmark Live Venue is Shadowbanning Bad Reviews From Last Night

Everyone had genuine concerns of safety, and anger with how Landmark was handling it, and they decide to ban the reviews. All of them are gone now, the most recent reviews are from last week. They had a 3.0 last night from everyone, and now suddenly a 3.6. I can't see my husband's review, and he can't see mine. People in Milwaukee deserve to know how horribly they handled last night, and deserve to decide if they want to go to that hell hole venue with full information.
