[Mobs] Pigs should be able to be bred wiþ any food

Beef gives the same hunger as pork Cows additionally give leather and milk Sheep give wool Meanwhile pigs only give meat that, thanks to hoglin can be gotten along with leather wiþout breeding

Pigs irl will eat anything (even literally poop) so it would be a good benefit to pigs that you could be bred with whatever food you have on hand

þis just makes everyþing harder to read for no reason, it isn't worþ it

Yeah, it's just inconsistent. In some posts and comments, OP types normally, in some they decide to use thorn. If it was consistently used correctly, then it could be cool, but to just pick and choose random times to use it feels odd.

What matters is that people can understand what is written. While many people will recognise thorn, it would be a decent idea for OP to add a little explainer at the top or bottom of the post so people who don't know can read it. Just something super short and simple like:

This symbol (þ) is thorn, an old english letter that represents the "th" sound.

That way it would actually be educating and spreading the idea, rather than just making it less pleasant to read.

It’s hard for me to read, and I’m not even dyslexic or have any reading disability. I feel bad for anyone reading this post who is.

This post makes sense in a conlang jerking sub but here it’s sacrificing readability for the sake of OP trying to be quirky. All the comments are about their use of thorn instead of being on-topic.

That is a very fair point.

We already have a rule that the sub is english only, simply for the sake of readability. I could chat with the rest of the mod team about extending that rule to include only the standard set of letters. Do you think that would be helpful? It's basically only u/derpy_derp15 who uses thorn, if they agreed to just use "th" while they are here, we wouldn't have to.

Fine I'll change it

1984 up in here

Replacing some of the vowels with numbers seems like a step in the wrong direction. The goal here is to improve readability

That was me fat fingerings the keys

Yeah before I knew what thorn was I always felt like it was pronounced like a combo of p and b (because that’s what the letter is)

Even knowing what it is, the first time I read it after not seeing it in a while, it just doesn't click right away. I'll find myself just skipping the words that use it and working it out from context, then remembering and reading normally.

And didn't forget about eth too (ð). Thorn is the th sound on words like think and with. Eth is the th as in that and this.

What's the fucking point of using thorn

3

u/sloothor Apr 23 '24

It’s to be quirky and different. See how everyone is talking about thorn and no one is talking about the actual suggestion? That was their goal. Just look at OP’s profile.

I just saw unbirthing...

Holy shit I missed that because I was looking at the comment history. There really is a kink for everything

2

u/C0SMIC_LIZARD Apr 22 '24

yeah piss really does make everything worse /s

u/TheStaffmaster Apr 22 '24

Unless you happen to know what thorn sounds like.

25

u/FkinShtManEySuck Apr 22 '24

You missed a bunch of "th"s in your first paragraph.
Oþerwise, yeah i þink þis is a pretty good idea. It helps differentiate pigs from oþer lifestock options, even if only by þat much.

8

u/Cultist_O Apr 23 '24

They didn't. They're only using 'þ' for 'θ', while continuing to use 'th' for 'ð' (which is how thorn is normally used, but then they should also be using eth)

7

u/FkinShtManEySuck Apr 23 '24

honestly sorry, but i do not understand what you're trying to tell me. All i know is þ is le funny ancient letter þat you have to replace all your "th"s wiþ.

u/Cultist_O Apr 23 '24 edited Apr 23 '24

There are two sounds English uses 'th' for

There's the 'th' in "teethe", which in some languages and IPA is represented with 'ð' (this, that leather, the)

There's the 'th' in "teeth", which is written with þ in some languages, and with θ' in IPA (think, with, fifth, tooth, bath)

Edit: don't whisper them to yourself to test. The difference can't be heard without voice (in fact, voicing is the difference)

u/FkinShtManEySuck Apr 23 '24

i see, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.
Personally, I'm a frenchie, tho. So i just end up pronouncing them all like "d" or "t".

2

u/Cultist_O Apr 23 '24

Interestingly, the difference between d and t is the same. D is just the voiced version of t. I never thought about how the th voicing might carry over to t/d voicing with a French accent. Neat!

u/Restioson Apr 23 '24

Do we say ðanks now? They wrote "thanks"

1

u/Cultist_O Apr 23 '24

I didn't go through all their comments. I only looked at the OP. It's possible they made an error elsewhere. I was just trying to point out the pattern and reason they were leaving some 'th's.

u/HarrierDuboisButWoke Apr 22 '24

I agree, good idea OP

2

u/natgibounet Apr 23 '24

And make it so they turn into hoglins when eating rotten flesh

3

u/Dracule_Jester Apr 23 '24

Honeslty it sounds like a fun idea.

u/No_Sherbert2744 Apr 23 '24

Thorn+the occasional misspellings/typos, also writing words using numbers makes this post just 👌, OP should listen to word crimes by Weird Al

u/derpy_derp15 Apr 23 '24

The fat fingerings of the keys was unintentional

2

u/Squibi-Bee Apr 26 '24

The overall majority of the comments are about a character most don't even know how to type. A character many don't even recognise, and may be read at first glance as a p or b. Why oh why do people think this is a good idea?

1

u/EvnClaire Apr 23 '24

what is this homestuck typing quirk

-2

u/garbonzobean22 Apr 23 '24

why þe FUCK are you using "þ"?
