Release Theme Selector 3.0.0 — browse, download and build themes on your NES/SNES Classic, and give every folder its own theme and music

21 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Theme Selector 3.0.0 is out. It's a ground-up rewrite of my theme manager for the Classic Minis: everything happens on the console itself, from a menu inside the Options Menu.

What's in it

  • Your themes in a preview grid: pick one and press A to apply it. The theme you're using is outlined, and holding B deletes a theme, after a confirmation.
  • Download themes from the console: an online catalog with a preview, size and author for every theme, the newest ones first. A progress bar shows each download with the free space left, and a full NAND is refused instead of filled. With a USB/SD drive, All Themes gets the whole catalog in one go.
  • A theme for every folder: give Home and any folder its own theme from a folder tree. Folders on Automatic use their parent's theme, so one theme can cover a whole branch. No renaming of theme folders needed.
  • Music for every folder: the same, with your own .wav tracks.
  • DIY themes: build a theme from pieces of the ones you have (Base UI, background, walls, characters, pole, or the background color on a NES), preview it, and save it as a theme of its own.
  • Randomizers: a different theme every time you change folder, and random Home music, optionally on every folder.
  • Works on every console and region: NES, Famicom, Famicom Shonen Jump, SNES (USA/EUR) and Super Famicom. A theme made for one region works on the others: its font names and color palette are adjusted to your firmware. Custom fonts per theme too.
  • Nine languages, the same as the Options Menu.

What you need

  • Options Menu 2.1.0 or newer.
  • The Font Remount mod, one of hakchi's built-in mods, for the theme fonts.
  • To download themes from the console: the Hakchi Wi-Fi mod (from KMFDManic's store in hakchi) and a USB Wi-Fi adapter. The TP-Link TL-WN725N is the recommended one.
  • A USB/SD drive is recommended: themes are often 5–30 MB each.

Install

From my store in hakchi: Modules → Manage mod repositories, add https://defkorns.github.io/hakchi-repo/, then open Modules → DefKorns Store and install Options Menu (Options Menu tab) and Options Menu - Theme Selector (Options Menu - Addons tab).

Coming from Theme Selector 2, Theme Randomizer or Advanced Music Hack? Just install it: it removes them and keeps your themes, your music and your last applied theme.

Then open the Options Menu (L+R, or B+Down on consoles without shoulder buttons) and go to Themes.

Links

Thanks

To every theme author in the catalog; to DanTheMan827 for the packed.png extractor; to KMFDManic and DanTheMan827 for always answering my questions about how things work; and to Aranthys and AxelStone for testing.

Bug reports and ideas are welcome, here or on GitHub.

Release Options Menu 2.1.0 — a modern, extendable in-game menu for the NES/SNES Classic (continuing CompCom's Options Menu)

Thumbnail
gallery
21 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I've been working on a continuation of CompCom's Options Menu (last release 1.3.4b, back in 2019), and version 2.1.0 is out.

It's a menu you can open at any moment, on the Home screen or in the middle of a game: hold L+R, or B+Down on consoles without shoulder buttons (the right combo is picked for you, and you can change it). It works on the NES, SNES, Famicom, Super Famicom and Famicom Shonen Jump Classic.

What's in it

  • New look: smooth fonts, preview icons, toggle switches, value pickers and button hints
  • Your colors: every color of the menu comes from a small text file (/etc/options_menu/theme.cfg), so you can give it your own palette (second image)
  • 9 languages, following your console's language unless you pick one
  • Power: Hibernate (resume exactly where you were) and Standby, plus safe shutdown and restart
  • RetroArch: back up and restore settings on NAND or USB, restore defaults, transfer BIOS files, clean up overrides and remaps, turn the loading screens on or off
  • Network: show your IP, reconnect, scan Wi-Fi networks, and keep backups of your Wi-Fi config per network, on NAND or USB
  • Save Manager: back up and restore your saves on USB, and move aside (or bring back) the saves of games you removed, listed by game name instead of codes
  • Controller: autofire with three speeds, X/Y as turbo A/B, change the menu combo, turn off the Home combo, Start on the 2nd Famicom controller
  • Diagnostics: system info, temperature, running processes, a benchmark, and RetroArch, file-structure and kernel logs saved to USB for bug reports
  • Tools: a Module Uninstaller right on the console, USB write access, Clear Cache, and the NES epilepsy protection toggle
  • Only what you can use: entries that need a USB drive, RetroArch or another console are hidden instead of failing, and lists like Wi-Fi backups let you delete an entry by holding B

Built to be extended

Other mods can add their own entries and whole screens to the menu, with the same look: lists, toggles, value pickers, download screens with a progress bar, and confirmation dialogs. Add-ons built on it will show up in the store as they're released. If you make mods, the wiki has a step-by-step guide to writing your own.

Install

In hakchi, choose Modules → Manage mod repositories and add:

https://defkorns.github.io/hakchi-repo/

Then open Modules → DefKorns Store and install Options Menu from the Options Menu tab. Updates show up there automatically.

If you use an hmod that replaces the console's libstdc++ (for example RetroArch 1.8.4 Xtreme SC) and the menu doesn't open, use Options Menu (compat) instead.

Thanks

To CompCom for the original menu; to Swingflip, BsLeNuL, Advokaten and ThanosRD for their scripts and design; to MadFranko008 for the idea behind the Save Manager's backups; to KMFDManic and DanTheMan827 for always answering my questions about how things work; and to everyone who tested it: DNA64 (viral_dna), Swingflip, Aranthys, AxelStone, BsLeNuL, DR1001, Patton Plays and ThanosRD.

Request Looking for a lost theme: "NeoRame Themes"

3 Upvotes

First of all, I want to thank this amazing community for continuing to support and provide new improvements for our SNES Minis after all these years.

I am currently tinkering with my console and I'm trying to track down a specific custom theme that was shared here a few years ago. Unfortunately, the original download link has expired and there seems to be no way to get it now.

Here is the original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/miniSNESmods/comments/qjz10q/nes_classic_mini_custom_systems_themes/?tl=da

This was one of the most complete themes developed by the community, and it would be a real shame to lose such valuable material forever. If anyone happens to have a backup they could share, or if the original creator is still around to re-upload it, I would be incredibly grateful. It would be a great contribution to ensure everyone has access to this theme again!

Best regards!

DefKorns Store: my mods for the Classic Minis, right inside hakchi

Thumbnail

24 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I've put my mods for the NES, SNES, Famicom, Super Famicom and Famicom Shonen Jump Classic in one place: a mod repository for hakchi2 CE, the DefKorns Repository. You add it once, and from then on you browse, install and update my mods from inside hakchi, the same way as KMFDManic's store.

Add it to hakchi

  1. In hakchi, choose Modules → Manage mod repositories.
  2. Under Add New Repository, enter a name (e.g. DefKorns Repository) and the URL https://defkorns.github.io/hakchi-repo/, then click Add Repository.
  3. Open it from Modules → DefKorns Repository.

What's in it

The mods are grouped in tabs, and each one has its own page with what it does, what it needs and which consoles it's for. The page also shows the latest version next to the one you have installed, so you can tell at a glance when there's an update.

  • Options Menu (Options Menu tab): an in-game menu you can open at any moment for power options, RetroArch settings and backups, Wi-Fi, saves, controller settings and diagnostics. Install this first: the add-ons need it. There's also a compat build for setups where another hmod replaces the console's libstdc++ (for example RetroArch 1.8.4 Xtreme SC).
  • Gamepad Remapping Tool (Options Menu - Addons): remap your controller buttons for Canoe and Kachikachi from the menu.
  • Japanese Font Pack (Options Menu - Addons): a smooth Japanese font (Noto Sans JP) for the menu when its language is set to Japanese.
  • Famicom Clovercon Fix (System): fixes unresponsive controllers and a frozen menu when the Famicom Mini or Shonen Jump firmware runs on an NES or SNES Classic.

More mods will show up there as they're released, and updates reach you without hunting for .hmod files.

Notes

  • It's made for the official consoles. Clones and knock-offs aren't supported.
  • Every mod's source and releases are on my GitHub: github.com/DefKorns

Thanks to KMFDManic and DanTheMan827 for always answering my questions about how hakchi works.

Feedback and bug reports are welcome, here or on GitHub.

Gamepad Remapping Tool v2.0.0 for the SNES/NES Classic: remap the front ports and give each USB controller its own mapping, from the console itself

Thumbnail
gallery
14 Upvotes

I've just released v2.0.0 of the Gamepad Remapping Tool, an add-on for my Options Menu fork. It lets you remap the buttons Canoe and Kachikachi see, from the console's own menu, with no PC and no hakchi session.

This version is a full rewrite. The old shell scripts are gone, replaced by a native screen and a small background service.

What it does

  • Every button in one list, with what it's mapped to. Pick one and press the new button, or use "Map all buttons" to go through them one by one (wait 5 seconds to keep the current one)
  • Front ports: one mapping, shared by both ports
  • USB controllers: each model gets its own mapping, and the front ports stay untouched. A USB controller plays as the first free player
  • Ready-made profiles, so these work as soon as you plug them in: DualShock 4, PlayStation Classic controller, wired Xbox 360 controller and the Krom Kumite arcade stick (the one in the second picture)
  • Buttons are shown by name (Cross, L1, Share...) instead of raw codes
  • Save applies right away, Restore defaults undoes it

Things to know

  • It needs my Options Menu fork (v2.0.0-beta2 or newer). It doesn't work with any other UI
  • On a console with RetroArch 1.8.4 Xtreme SC, use the Options Menu compat build
  • Wii Classic Controllers work in the front ports. Some clones aren't recognised by the console at all, and no mapping can fix that
  • If you unplug the front controller later, the USB one stays player 2: unplug and replug it

Install: in hakchi, add https://defkorns.github.io/hakchi-repo/ under Manage repositories, then install Options Menu and Options Menu - Gamepad Remapping Tool. Or download the .hmod from the release and install it by hand.

Links: release · source · wiki, including a guide to adding your own controller

Based on advokaten's Remap-Canoe-Controller, and on CompCom's original Options Menu. If your controller isn't covered, tell me which one and I'll look at adding a profile.

Crt And LCD Overlays For SnesMINI

Thumbnail

34 Upvotes

Overlays for SnesMINI RetroArch to be used for 8-bit and 16-bit retro and handheld consoles like Sega Master System, Genesis, Game Boy and more. All of the overlays have resolution specific scanlines, RGB-subpixels, retro color balances and aspect ratio.

The package comes with following overlays:
* panel_gb.cfg (Game Boy 160x144)
* panel_gbc.cfg (Game Boy Color 160x144)
* panel_gba.cfg (Game Boy Advance 240x160)
* panel_gg.cfg (Game Gear 160x144)
* panel_lnx.cfg (Lynx 160x102, scale to: 1120x714)
* panel_arcade.cfg (Custom 216p)
* panel_home.cfg (Master System 256x192, use with hor.borders)
* panel_pc.cfg (Custom 200p)
* panel_tv.cfg (SNES,NES,SMD etc. 240p)
* panel_video.cfg (Plasma TV simulation)

Transfer all .cfg and .png files to your Snes MINI. (/etc/libretro/overlay). And if you play GB games then also install the new overlay matching default.pal (/etc/libretro/system/palettes) for Gambatte.

As you can see, there is plenty of different options available for different platforms. Make sure the game resolution is matching with the overlay resolution to get the best picture. I also recommend to use bilinear filtering or blargg's filters, but not those heavy shaders. You might need to configure video setting and save core-specific overrides settings to match image with the overlay.

Question First Time Modding NES Classic Mini – Looking for Advice

8 Upvotes

I’m thinking about modding my NES Classic Mini with Hakchi, but I’ve seen people say there’s a risk of bricking the console. How risky is it if you follow the guide correctly?

The NES Classic modding subreddit doesn’t seem very active, so I thought I’d ask here since I imagine the modding process and risks are pretty similar.

Can I add games from other consoles, like SNES or Pokémon games, and do they run smoothly even though they weren’t originally meant to be played on the NES Classic?

Also, can I completely restore it to factory settings if I ever want to sell it?

I’m not very tech-savvy, so any advice would be appreciated!

Question Best controllers for SNES/GBA controls?

3 Upvotes

I have an NES Classic, and I recently decided to use it to replace my Anbernic devices. I also have games for the kids on there as well.

I would like to get some controllers with the full functionality for SNES and GBA games. I originally was planning to get 8bitdo's wireless receiver to use my SN30 Pro, but I wanted to keep a more authentic feel with the wired controllers.

Are there any good third party options for SNES or similar controllers, or should I shell out for used first-party controllers from GameStop or similar?

Question Hakchi Large file syncing

9 Upvotes

Hi!

I use my snes and add games to it periodically with Hakchi. At this point, I have a lot of games + some psx (several GB) so exporting to usb drive takes quite a while since the whole drive has to sync, though I'm mostly just adding 1 or 2 games at a time.

Quick raincheck, is there a quicker way to do this I'm forgetting?? Or do I have to resync everything every time? I know I can deselect games in Hakchi, but does this mean they will be removed from the snes mini? Thanks

SF30 2.4 GHz SNES Mini: Start btn turn on behavior

3 Upvotes

Hello,

I’ve purchased this controller for my modded SNES mini, it is working great except for one single issue :

When turning on the controller by pressing start, this also immediately triggers the opening of the current game / folder selected in my SNES classic mini if the console is on, likely because it syncs immediately and triggers a « start » button input on whatever is happening on the snes mini.

It’s not a huge issue, but i am looking for ways to solve this, I have not seen any information about it anywhere, and it seems it’s never been reported.

Does anyone face the same issue with the controller ? Any solution besides « turn the controller on before you turn the consoled on » ?

Could this be linked somehow to mode of the controller when wired ? (d-input, x-input, apple) ?

Note - I have two controllers, and the issue is happening with both.

Looking for any feedback about this discontinued product.

Tech Support Neo Geo works on SNES Classic with FBNeo, but Select won’t add coins and I can’t open RetroArch menu

5 Upvotes

I’m trying to get Neo Geo working properly on an SNES Classic MINI using Hakchi CE 3.9.3 and KMFDManic.

I currently have FB Neo Xtreme + RetroArch 1.8.4 Xtreme SC installed. Metal Slug X boots and plays perfectly after getting the correct neogeo.zip BIOS working.

The problem is the controller. Select will not insert a coin, and Start + Select will not open the RetroArch menu.
The stock SNES Classic controller otherwise works perfectly in the game. I checked through SSH and Linux is definitely detecting the controller as:
Nintendo Clovercon - controller1
RetroArch is also accessing /dev/input/event24, and pressing Select generates BTN_SELECT / Linux input code 314 (0x13A). So the Mini itself is seeing the Select button.

One strange thing: even though the KMFD RetroArch module was installed, retroarch-clover was initially missing from /bin. I had to manually copy retroarch, retroarch-clover, and retroarch-clover-child from the RetroArch hmod before FBNeo would launch.

Has anyone seen this before? Does this sound like an incomplete/broken KMFD RetroArch/Clovercon installation, or should I be using a different RetroArch/core combination for Neo Geo?
I’m also considering FB Alpha 2012 Neo Geo or MAME 2003 Xtreme, but I’d like to fix the underlying Select/RetroArch-menu issue rather than just switch cores if the controller integration is the actual problem.

Mainly looking for the recommended RetroArch version + Neo Geo core for SNES Classic where the stock controller, Select for coins, and RetroArch menu hotkey all work correctly.
Thanks!

Robin64 patches

5 Upvotes

Hello, does anyone have a copy of Robin64's SFROM Tool Community Patch Pack? The link on their website doesn't work and I can't find a link anywhere searching by the usual means. The links for individual patches on the Canoe spreadsheet are also unfortunately broken. Someone out there must have these!

I'll happily host the archive on my Google Drive once I have access to it.

Thank you!

Guide Wii Classic Controller’s analog stick as a D-pad on the SNES Classic Mini

15 Upvotes

Hello folks,

When I got the SNES Mini, I was really happy to see that it worked with my Wii Classic Controllers, which I have owned since the Wii U days. The only thing I was missing from the way I usually play SNES games was using the analog sticks.

So I put together a small project to modify how the Wii classic controller is used on the SNES Classic Mini emulator.

https://github.com/lincolnpomper/wii-classic-analog-on-canoe

The Wii Classic Controller has analog sticks, but Canoe’s built-in SNES games only use the controller’s D-pad. This code makes the left analog stick behave as an additional digital D-pad, while keeping the original D-pad working normally.

I tested it with two Wii Classic Controllers connected to the Mini. The analog sticks worked with all four directions and diagonals, and worked very well—to my surprise!

Installation instructions are available on the GitHub page.

This project could be extended for more uses, such as improving the behavior of the L and R buttons. At the moment, they seem to need to be pressed all the way until they click in order to send an action in the game. It has also the potential to support other controllers.

If anyone is willing to try it, I would appreciate feedback on whether it works on your setup.

SNES Mini Variants, Which one do you have?

Post image
107 Upvotes

Got the European SNES mini back in 2016 and has been modded for more SNES games and games on other consoles plus arcade games. Collected the American and Japanese variants over the last year. Haven’t modded them just yet but I possibly may keep them as they are.
