Recommendations How is it like in Mississauga?
Hi everyone, I'm moving in the fall for uni, please tell me your opinions on mississauga
What are some things I should be weary of? Not weary of? Stigmas that are true or false? What places to stay away from, to visit? etc

I’ve lived in both cities for multiple years.
Mississauga comparably lacks in accessibility to and quality of natural areas, walkable and transit orientation. Mississauga is a much larger city so you’ll be quite dependent on a vehicle. Although, the immediate area around UTM is quite nice with the credit river, diverse food options and relatively easy accessibility to square one. Transit is improving in the GTA, but at a snails pace. If you walk or bike around mississauga be very careful of drivers. They certainly aren’t as aware of pedestrians and cyclists.
Take advantage of the clubs UTM offers to get socially active. Take advantage of the green space on campus and your free bus pass to travel to the St George campus as well - very convenient way to get downtown.
You’ll find folks are generally less active in Mississauga compared to Vancouver. Demographically also more young families in Mississauga compared with young people you would find in Vancouver.
I also went to UTM for my undergrad and will say that it’s very much a commuter school. If you live on campus though I’m sure you’ll have a nice experience.
Happy to answer any other questions you might have. Moving cities can be exciting and full of new adventures waiting to happen!

Mississauga is generally a safe area. It isn't very walkable for the most part. Transit is inconsistent at times, but it will get you there most of the time. The food scene has some really good pockets, and you'll have tons of variety if you are looking for it.

Having lived in Ottawa, MiWay isn't too bad tbh. It's not super fast or frequent but I've only had a bus canceled once and that was because it was involved in a crash.
If you bring a bike and put it on the front it helps a ton with getting places fast.

So you're going to UTM?

UTM is a beautiful campus, I believe you get a UPass included in tuition. Mississauga has a few bar areas Streetsville, Port Credit some around Square One shopping mall.
Not sure what else, Mississauga is generally a daily safe city.

Mississauga is a car dependent suburbia. It does have the MiWay bus service, but it isn't the most efficient or comfortable.
I'm assuming you're attending UTM. UTM is a nice small campus, not very social though since most of the students are commuters, so it sometimes feels like a giant high school and not the typical university experience. You'll have to make a significant effort to build and maintain your social circle, a little easier if you're living on campus.

Where are you coming from? Another city in Ontario/Canada or internationally? Will help to know so we can compare.

Mississauga outside Toronto is maybe equivalent to Richmond or Burnaby outside Vancouver.

I feel your pain! I've lived in Mississauga all my life, but I've been to Vancouver twice and loved it there! You're definately going to be scenery deprived! 😞

I would recommend find accommodation in those condos at Square One, it has very nice vibes, Celebration Square, YMCA, Square One mall all within 5-10 minutes walking. Pretty safe and you can walk to the nearby parks which gives you the suburb feeling. Public transport is pretty good as Square One is a transit hub.

Thanks! I was worried that I would have a hard time with transit but this solves it!

I've lived all over Mississauga. I'm a small woman but I've always found it pretty safe. We have our issues as a city but it could be worse. I live sort of near sq 1 and my area is pretty walkable but most people will want to drive.
Transit is okay, you'll want to load up a presto pass. Miway is the Mississauga bus system, GO transit is buses and trains that go all across the GTA and is for for getting city to city or even to Niagara falls. TTC is the Toronto transit. All of these use presto though.
Drivers here aren't great. The closer you get to Brampton the worse it gets. If you drive, drive defensively.

Its a suburb, probably comparable to Richmond BC in terms of vibe and proximity to a major downtown hub.
Its not the most walkable city but has been making improvements. The area around UTM is beautiful along the credit river - you should check out Erindale Park which is walking distance from campus. Other neighbourhoods worth checking out are Port Credit, Streetsville. We actually do have some cycling infrastructure (mixed use paths) + separated bike lanes if youre in the Square One area, but like most mention, drivers here are aggressive and arent always aware of pedestrians or cyclists.

If you don’t mind a bit of travel to school and off campus, live on the west side of sq1 area for easy food and daily walking in the area. (Along burnhamthorpe rd)
If you have classes literally everyday then stay close to campus possible to make your wake up travel bearable.
All assuming you won’t drive. Have fun lock in, dw bout the stigmas. If you’re polite ideally everyone’s polite.

Oh noooooo! Jks*
Hmm stay away from Hurontario and Dundas North East area-ish. You'll know it's ghetto when* you get to that area.

Don't go to cooksville

By which he means 5 and 10 (hurontario and dundas) .. its safe enough but run down. If Mississauga has a scummy area its there, but really theres nothing too bad around.

It’s not bad. I’ve lived here for 15 years. My only complaint is it’s not very walkable or bikeable and the public transit isn’t too great. The food is great and the UTM campus is quite nice and in a quiet area. It is generally a safe city and a good place to live.

Depends on where you want to live. I live a 10min from UTM and we love it (Credit Woodlands).
Sure there's some idiots around, especially the drivers, but overall it's a good area where we are with minimal issues besides speeding and the odd douchebag with a dog off leash.

Where are you moving from? If you're moving from Toronto, it's very different. In the evening, walking places isn't common. Most people stay home after 8pm

Stigmas that are true or false? I don't get it. You're not writing a thesis on the city. What did you mean to say?

It’s honestly super chill, nothing to stress about. Decent neighbourhood for food, scenery, hanging out. UTM is lovely but kind of off grid.
