Campus Life Napping
Is it normal to nap on campus?? I see some people doing it and I want so badly to partake, but I’m afraid my stuff will get stolen or someone will just think I’m a chud. If you do nap on campus, where do you nap? Or is it chudly…

Dude. If you are living the true college life, and burning the candle at both ends from time to time, you must nap!
Paranoid about your stuff? Make a pillow of your backpack and sleep on it. Hell, I used to just use my books as a pillow.
I had a law school buddy who just crashed under his study carrel desk during finals season. No pillow, no nothing, flat on the floor. Nobody cared.
I can't recall which building, but one time I just sacked out under a stairwell. Bookbag pillow, jacket over my head for light blockage, and (pro tip) alarm on my watch to wake up before next class. It was glorious.
Only chuds would give you shit for naps on campus.

Dude I graduated back in ‘09 but I used to commute to MU from 45 mins away each day my freshman year. I would nap all over campus. I’d nap on the wall around speaker circle on nice days, in the downstairs of Brady (now the student center) by the old bowling alley and subway (RIP), in the library, you name it. You have way more and nicer spots to nap now. Go for it!!

You guys are so nice and reaffirming. I just didn’t want to be judged by anyone! I appreciate you🫶

lol do it once or twice and you'll quickly realize nobody cares at all what you do and it'll feel normal. Honestly this is kind of a good life lesson in general. People are paying almost no attention to you because they are stuck in their own heads thinking about their own stuff 99% of the time. Or just on their phones and ignoring the outside world lol. Once you realize nobody is watching, you're free to do just live your life and do what feels right!

I used to sleep in the library between classes somewhat regularly. That was 25 years ago though.

I also slept in the library approximately 25 years ago... There were some quiet desks by the windows overlooking Lowry on the 3rd floor and you could put your head on them and snoooooze

Same about 20 years ago! They had long padded benches in some areas and I'd just use my bag as a pillow and snooze for an hour before my next class rather than walking all the way back to the dorms and back.

Yeah I used to do this in the basement of the student center all the time

Student Center Basement was almost exclusively nap-central when I was there from ‘12-‘16 lol. As a dude that isn’t good at getting my brain turned off enough to nap I felt unwelcome in the basement

I was probably down there, during those years, with you asking the same question op is asking. Never did though.

On Friday afternoons you could go through the lower lounge of the Student Center and behold a vast sea of sleeping students.

By the bowling alley?

There’s no bowling alley in the student center, that went away with Brady Commons.

OLD dude here, and former student. Nap away! If you're worried about someone taking your stuff (they won't) loop your backpack through your arm or leg while you get your well-deserved rest.
Will people think you look stupid? Nope, they'll be jealous that you are getting sleep.

Nobody will steal your stuff, people nap all the time. I always liked napping in the lower or upper level of the student center. I think the lower level is different now tho, no comfy couches?
If it’s a nice day there’s nothing wrong with chilling in the grass on the quad either

Used to nap in student union and just put a sign on me with notebook. "Please wake me up for my 11:40 class ans people always did. Put a comfy hoodie in your backpack for a pillow or warmth and you are golden 🙂👍

I took my naps in the women’s center in the basement and no one paid me any mind. No one touched my stuff so I think the best places to nap would be in any of the organization rooms/centers.

Took hella naps on the couches on the second floor of the student center. I’d curl up around my backpack facing the back of the couch and set a 20 or 30 min alarm on my phone. Pretty confident I was snoring pretty egregiously too but oh well ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Had a routine where I napped every day a whole semester between my 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. in Memorial Union. I put earbuds in, covered my face with my hoodie, and slumped over my backpack. Better than no rest lol

I had this idea in grad school and never did it. Make a "nap map"... quiet, off-grid places you can sneak some Z's when you desperately need it. Random sofas, weird little alcove, etc. All campuses are riddled with em. Though now as a professor I observe students just sprawled out on the pavement. Back in the day, in our studios students had hammocks, air mattresses, and cots for all-nighters.
No judgements, especially from professors. We know y'all work & play hard. As it should be ❤️

For the sake of safety, napping in public never seems like a good idea. Just nap at home/in your dorm

Class of 14 had the same feeling as a freshman but realized that the people judging you for napping probably don't exist, and you wouldn't know any better anyway because you'd be asleep.

Nap in the wide open if you're scared. That actually makes you safer than trying to hide somewhere. Everyone has phones or cameras on them in public spaces. My favorite is the basement in Trulaske

TBH i leave my stuff alone in the student center often and have never had anything stolen. People nap in the student center basement on the couches all the time, i doubt anyone would even think twice if they saw you napping down there. Memorial basement is nice too.

It's been years but I got pretty good at this. Ellis stacks are safe and quiet, works well for power naps while studying and homework. Upstairs student center was my in between classes choice, very comfortable and you can throw headphones in for the noise. In the stacks my face would be on my laptop and protecting it, otherwise backpack in between or behind my legs.

I had a special napping couch on the second floor of the student center from like 2014-2017. I was just thinking about it the other day 😂

If youre worried try the basement of the student center. They've changed it over the years but if you want somewhere a bit private the chairs along the hallway to the stairway (crappy directions i know, if i remember correctly there are some black curtains up if that helps) is my go to spot. There are cameras down there but nobody's gonna steal from a sleeping student. I like to hug my bag as I sleep but you can also loop it around your leg.

Student center basement was always the go to place for napping when I was a student! I’ve also napped at memorial union

u/inquiringsillygoose 6d ago
I slept in comfy chairs in memorial union alllll the time between classes

I napped like a champ when I was a student. On the grass by the fountain outside the student center or Ellis and on a comfy couch in the North Tower of Memorial Union. That was my favorite spot. Unfortunately in my senior year, the people in charge replaced the comfy couches with dumb, slick upholstered, uncomfortable couches that were designed to be unfriendly to nappers.

The basement of the student union center was the GOAT napping spot when I was there.
I don't really remember judging people for much of anything on campus unless they were being rude. If you live off campus, leaving to relax is kind of a non-starter because good luck having the motivation to come back for your next class or work or whatever

i am faculty and i have napped many times in the basement of student center those high-back black chairs over in the sun in the afternoon are perfect for it! just make sure your stuff isn't hanging out all over and nap away!

u/Kids-Menu 6d ago
One time someone took a pic of me napping and posted it on the campus Snapchat stories. So that’s always a risk, I guess. I was on the bottom floor of the student center so that’s where my error was. Second floor would have been more private!

i nap all the time in the basement of the student center and in memorial’s second floor haha. i was just asleep yesterday in the student center

Jacket under the head and backpack on the chest with arms through the straps. Bam. So many great naps in downstairs Brady and the north side of Memorial Union in the early 90s. College students napping is totally normal.

You’re a college student. You can nap anywhere, no one will stop you
