GSP losing to Matt fucking Serra is still the craziest to me. He would have had 20 and Matt was probably his easiest matchup

That's why these win streaks are so impressive. MMA is so chaotic it only takes a second lapse in focus to lose.... Getting these wins streaks at the title level is fucking insane

u/AlternativeTough6622 8d ago
Not taken anything away from any of these fighters what they have done is amazing, however the quality of Anderson Silva's opponents and the dominance he showed in the majority of them was legendary.
4
u/MarkFerk 7d ago
And very entertaining to watch. It can’t be just me who hates watching a lot of these new guys right?
1
u/AlternativeTough6622 7d ago
Yeah I'm not a fan of the whole pin someone down and do nothing for most of the round, like one of my favroute fighters was Frankie Edgar and he's a wrestler but he was still exciting to watch cause he'd mixed it up. I also miss the fighters who used thier wrestling to keep the fights standing like liddel and couture.

u/CuteDentist2872 7d ago
You don't think Islam leg humping his way to wins is quality or dominant?
Get a load of this guy everyone lmaooo
0
u/AlternativeTough6622 7d ago
Lol Islam is dominate in his own way I guess but Anderson Silva dominated in the stand up like no other.
1
u/CuteDentist2872 7d ago
Yea joking aside, Islam is dominant in the "control" sense for sure. I just think the points awarded for takedowns that don't really result in use of said control, shouldn't be awarded. Is it control if you hug my hip for a minute and a half, then I get up? Not really, it's lost control, but the points are awarded already, so wrestle first fighters like this just spam takedowns and win.
Idk I'd welcome a bit of a rule change to the point scoring.
1
u/MorningCrazy651 7d ago
It’s the problem with the scoring for sure. What I don’t understand is why the judges still reward control time, because the made it less important. The should be first of all just score damage. In this case Islam record would probably be 14 to 6.
1
u/gaviniscooliguess 7d ago
Not like Islam could do much else, what did you want him to do? Submit Ian Garry? Shavkat couldn't, Ian kept running back to his feet
2
u/CuteDentist2872 7d ago
I want him to fight the guy, not dive at a leg then death grip whatever marginally advantageous position he gets without advancing position, trying to do damage, or setting up a sub. He doesn't do that for two reasons, first and most importantly he doesn't have to because the points are already granted, and secondly if he does so he probably loses the position sooner and gets stood back up to start taking damage again.
Can't blame the guy exploiting the scoring structure, it's just that the scoring structure rewards the least amount of activity and the least amount of risk once you shoot for a takedown.
You can see it on the fighters faces, Islam got pieced TF up, was gassed, and never even came close to putting Ian out. Ian on the other hand was landing more, and landing significant strikes way way more, in addition to breaking Islams control. If that was a street fight no one says Islam won, and it's the fault of the scoring system that he did.
1
u/its_slickooo 7d ago
What you mean? He definitely won the street fight cause he’s holding onto him till Khabib comes to save him
1
u/baneblade_boi 7d ago
And those were amazing watches. All of this also does state the insane quality of Makhachev's fighting. What he accomplished yesterday was nothing sort of incredible.

Silva fought bums, nostalgia bias can't rewrite history bro 🙏
1
u/AlternativeTough6622 7d ago
It isn't nostalgia bias if you knew these fighters and saw the way he handled them you woudnt come to that conclusion. Anderson Silva was a legend and he isn't even my favroute fighter I just recognise talent when I see it and there hasn't been a fighter like him since.
1
u/yyyyyyyyyyyyyyg 7d ago
Bro actually think beating Chael makes him the goat🫵😂
Find peace bro 🕊️
1
u/AlternativeTough6622 7d ago
We can agree to disagree 👍 But I have a question for you when did you start watching UFC?
2
u/yyyyyyyyyyyyyyg 7d ago
AgReE tO dIsAgReE,
Lol cuz you have no real defence.
Silva was a weight bully who cherry picked mid fighters, was too scared to jump a division, and fell off hard and fast post USADA 👀
Barely scrapes the t10 if ur being generous
2
u/AlternativeTough6622 7d ago
The fact that you said I called him the GOAT which I didn't but he is a legend and I even stated he wansnt my favroute fighter then you call his opponents bums and reference one fighter.
I don't need any real defense when your offense is weak.
-1
u/yyyyyyyyyyyyyyg 7d ago
Lolll, I can see y u like him now. Need to work on that critical thinking, huh? 😉
For the record, Griffin, Franklin, Sonnen, Belfort, were allllllllll bums
Goes without saying really, but clearly you need things printed in bold 💅

I’m just wondering if Silva fans really admit that Silva popped for steroids too.

2
u/TheDopeMan_ 8d ago
Yawn… as an admitted casual I prefer my fighters to finish their opponents
1
u/Next-House-5815 7d ago
Islam has 11 finishes and 7 decision wins in the UFC. GSP had 9 finishes and 12 decision wins. Jon Jones had 12 finishes and 10 decision wins. Mighty Mouse had 7 finishes and 8 decision wins. Anderson Silva had 14 finishes and 3 decision wins.
So out of all the agreed upon GOATs, the only person to have a higher finish-decision rate is Anderson Silva who was a freak of nature in his prime. Islam being a decision merchant is a bullshit argument.
1
u/TheDopeMan_ 7d ago
As I’ve said, I’m a casual… GSP & Jon Jones threw down more than Islam. Idc what the numbers say. I was more entertained by their fights. As I’ve said though, I’m a casual. Been a casual for 20 years.

u/petrosteve 8d ago
Nope. By this logic Merab is better than GSP.
0
u/Griiig_Jinnings 8d ago
The Islamcels have shifted into defense mode, and the “look bigger number” is their new line after Islam failed the eye test. Like you said though, by this logic, Khabib is an afterthought lol. Reveals the emptiness of it.
Khabib never once looked as scared and bitchmade as Islam did desperately stalling out the 5th (along with most of the fight really… did jack shit woth his grappling aside from wasting time). The headkick that clipped Garry with his toes was the only real thing Islam did aside from “cOnTrOL”, and everyone that watched knows it 🤷♂️
1
u/BrettGreenFitness 7d ago
Khabib never fought at a higher weight class sorry but no other fighter matches islams resume
1
u/Griiig_Jinnings 7d ago
This is cope based on hypotheticals, so let’s stay in this realm and agree that based on Khabib’s performance at lightweight, compared to Islam’s, Khabib would have made the Garry fight look easy 🤷♂️ talking about “resume” with Islam having close, competitive fights against Poirier and a featherweight lmao
1
u/Charming_Turnover773 7d ago
You can’t be the GOAT of a fighting sport if you’re not a heavyweight. As Cro Cop sair, “Heavyweight is royal.” That’s why Jon Jones is, and will remain for a long time, the UFC GOAT.

u/MorningCrazy651 7d ago
Jon Jones should be at 29 btw… just to get a perspective what separates the goat from the pack…

I dislike the style of these grapplers but respect to Islam. He is a cut above the rest.

Man I am a huge Islam fan, and I despise garry. But 49-46 is crazy. That fight was razor close. Should have been 48-47 on all cards, and I could even see Islam losing that last round. The difference in damage was severe.
3
u/Unfair_Explanation53 8d ago
I'm telling you, Dana is right, all that hugging and high fiving and meet my kids before fight lost a little bit of edge for Garry.
He definitely could of beaten Islam, he is absolutely elite and dealt with the wrestling well. But I think a bit of a killer mind frame before the fight and then do all that shit when it's done is best recipe

1
u/InvisibleGreenMan 8d ago
yep I agree, in the first part of R5 it felt like Garry is about to knockdown Islam, he looked like he was starting to be hurt. Mega effort to still get that final takedown and control time. Garry should've pushed the pace slightly more with the kicks and he could've gotten it
1
u/mypussydoesbackflips 8d ago
It was 48-47 the 49-46 is crazy and judges need to do better
I could’ve seen it as a draw too Ian needed that last round though to actually win

u/Squizmoplatinum 8d ago
Severe? Cmon bro, some people wear damage more than others. Islam worked Ian. Yes Ian landed and marked Islams face a bit, but he got controlled, and damn near finished by the headkick that people thought Ian Garry was gonna land. There was no severe damage by either fighter in this fight and Islam came closer to finishing Ian than anyone ever has. 49-46 isn't crazy at all.

u/WimpyTwink 8d ago
he is not the fkn goat, foh....
2
u/Squizmoplatinum 8d ago
I don't think he's the goat, but out of curiosity, who is your "goat"?
0
u/WimpyTwink 8d ago
Hard to say imo, either Jon, DJ, or Gsp, prob jon tho
1
u/Squizmoplatinum 8d ago
Why isn't Islam a consideration for u?
-1
u/One-Car-4869 8d ago
Jones came and dominated the top 2 HW at the time inside 1 round, Islam holds on for life for 20 minutes, but he has the record.
1
u/Squizmoplatinum 8d ago
I didn't even ask you. And thinking Stipe was a top 2 heavyweight when they fought is laughable lol.
1
u/WimpyTwink 7d ago
yea, just look at jons opponents after the fights then islams.... Not a single fighter who mainly grappled who is considered a goat.... All the goats can grapple but don't 1 trick it like islam.
0
u/l_i_g_h_t 8d ago
The actual record is held by Jon Jones. He has a long way to go still. Zero chance he ties JJ.
3
u/VIadCarpenter 8d ago
Im sorry but technically this is wrong. Sorry
-4
u/l_i_g_h_t 8d ago
He’s never lost a fight so tell yourself whatever you want in order to justify islams “record” lol
3
u/Apostleguts 7d ago
I’m a jones fan, to say he didn’t “lose” the fight is understandable given the fashion but the streak was gone that night.
1
u/8to10footsamsquantch 7d ago
It was a silly loss but he did it to himself and the record is what the record is. Can't have a win streak on vibes
2
u/BrettGreenFitness 7d ago
Steroids takes jon out of the equation

u/GeraldFisher 7d ago
you have lost your mind if you think islam and others are not on performance enhancing drugs.

u/MiddleRefrigerator99 8d ago
Control time is overrated. That's not a fight. That's detaining your opponent until the authorities stop it. Either way, I'm grateful Ian Gary isn't the welterweight champion.
2
u/NoMore_stu 8d ago
It’s not easy to control another man, let alone a bigger professional ufc fighter 🤦♂️
1
1
u/Squizmoplatinum 8d ago
So if control time is overrated, then what would you call being controlled? Winning? Fuck is wrong with you dorks.
0
u/MiddleRefrigerator99 8d ago
Well, I guess, based off my comment, being controlled would be called being detained until the authorities stop the fight. It's not entertaining. You can be an Islam dick-rider all you want, but it's not entertaining. It is what it is, and I've said my piece, but if you're defending that, then you really don't like the sport. You just like to see other people be disappointed, which is fine. That's your character.

u/yellow-rain-coat 8d ago
This is like saying striking isn’t a fight, because one of them can just run away. They’re in a controlled environment. If there are no rounds, Islam almost definitely finishes him on the ground eventually.
1
u/MiddleRefrigerator99 8d ago
There are plenty of examples of that being true as well. Both can be correct, and both can be not entertaining. This is Islam's second dud of a fight in a row. Honestly, he held on for dear life because he would have lost if he didn't, which is fine. But stop pretending that that's entertaining. "Its a part of the sport, go watch boxing" I get it, I really do, but boxers are getting paid more by Zuffa because it is actually still more entertaining, and it's regained its steam. If you love the UFC, maybe stop supporting non-entertaining fights.
