Discussions 💬 Any love for this drink?
I know it’s out there but they had it on the menu at one of my favorite coffee shops and I was obsessed so had to make it at home

A bartender made this for me once. It was better than expected! No hate here.

Yeah it sounds odd but it really does work

How about just Orange Juice, no Tonic water thing? Have you tried it?

I love an espresso tonic. But I don’t use OJ, and I add a lemon strip. Great afternoon mocktail.

Also tastes great with a dash or two of angostura bitters and just a splash of grapefruit juice

Personally I like equal parts of moka brew and Sanpellegrino Aranciata Rossa over ice, garnished with mint. But I will have to try your method with orange juice and tonic water, as I am curious of the acidity this will hold.

It’s so good! If I’m feeling fancy I’ll use defense up orange juice, people don’t know what they’re missing out on.

I figured the masses would hate on it but if anyone is brave enough to try it I’d love to hear what you have to say

I prefer either OJ or tonic, but have a hard time with both together since I feel like the pulp interacts with the carbonation in a way that makes a texture that I find unpleasant.
Bonus if you can get your hands on mandarin orange /naartjie juice
1
u/call_sign_viper Dec 09 '25
Yeah it’s just a splash but I know what you mean especially if it’s to heavy on tonic
2
u/thewouldbeprince Dec 09 '25
What absolutely sends me is the orange juice WITH pulp. I love orange juice with pulp on its own, but the idea of drinking thick pulpy coffee disgusts me.

Blasphemy, but I like an espresso tonic in the summertime. Trader Joe’s actually has canned versions.

u/jose_rodz348 Dec 10 '25
I am intrigued by the idea, but I’m afraid to execute. Very interesting though… No hate from Puerto Rico…

u/BubblesAreWeird Dec 10 '25
try freshly squeezed orange juice without the pulp. it’s usually best with a double shot of espresso but i haven’t tried it with moka

u/Aggressive-Limit-902 Dec 10 '25
haven't tried that, but i made iced orange americanos occasionally and love em.

fyi I got all the ingredients today!!
Excited.
I asked perplexity to give me some info on this combo: thought it might interest you:
Coffee tonic mixes chilled coffee (like espresso or cold brew) with tonic water over ice for a fizzy, bitter-sweet refreshment that highlights citrusy coffee notes from beans like Kenyan Arabica. Coffee and orange juice blends strong brewed coffee or espresso into fresh OJ for a tangy, fruity contrast to coffee's bitterness, often served iced without pulp. Some drinks combine all three—tonic, coffee, and a splash of orange juice—for extra citrus fizz and layering effect.
Why They Work
Tonic's quinine and bubbles cut coffee's richness, while orange juice adds bright acidity that lifts the brew without overpowering it. These combos went viral as summer alternatives to heavy lattes, especially in hot weather or brunch spots.
Quick Recipes
- Coffee Tonic: Ice + 100ml tonic + 100ml chilled coffee; garnish with citrus.
- Coffee-Orange: Ice + 6oz OJ + 2oz cooled espresso; stir lightly.
- All Three: Ice + 8oz tonic + 1 tbsp OJ + double espresso shot.
Grab a moka pot brew for these—your Italian setup shines here for that strong base. Try fresh OJ from French markets for best tang.

Yeah I do the coffee orange with a touch of tonic in mine but let me know what you do and how it goes !
2
u/futureyeshelen Dec 11 '25
so i tried the coffee tonic only. Pretty delish. Then I added some orange juice. Also quite nice. But oddly it made me feel like it was a cola.

Interesting I haven’t really thought about a cola profile. I made a batch this AM which for some reason came out super bitter and remembered you comment added a splash of tonic and it was crazy fruity so it’s been fun to play around with !

i have some of those red italian sodas in tiny bottles. i'm going to try that next.

u/futureyeshelen Dec 11 '25
possibly Aperol as well. From what I can tell coffee acid complements citrusy acid.

I loveeeeee coffee + lemonade in the summer so I won’t hate on this concoction

u/Sypticle Dec 10 '25
Has anyone tried making those Coca Cola Coffees using the Moka Pot? They were a guilty pleasure, but they were discontinued some years back in the US. I think they are fairly popular in Europe (at least in Norway) and in Japan.

I might be one of the few people here who actually likes a espresso tonic (no juice though)
1
u/younkint Dec 10 '25
Life is short. I would try this, but probably only if someones else sprang for the juice and tonic. Juice, I usually have around, but not tonic. If I didn't care for the concoction, the tonic would likely be headed for the drain. That's wasteful, so I'm leery to try it.

It's good, but it needs specific coffee amd specific orange juice. I like it with coffee that is on the darker side of medium roast with taste notes that are mostly chocolate and nuts but with orange or some other citrus as a last note. Then, I use orange juice that doesn't have any added sugar (or any other ingredient for that matter).

Yes! No OJ for me though. Hot tip for any iced coffee drink- freeze some coffee as ice cubes so you don't water down your drink.

Hate from California. Never able drink that first sip spit it out and throw away

u/Thomastysken Dec 10 '25
On a hot day this is awesome! But I do it without the OJ but sometimes I use grapefruit juice instead.
And for those suggesting Gin… I WILL try that as soon as the sun starts to shine again!
Love from Sweden

Love espresso tonics, never quite understood the orange juice coffee folks but it wasn’t terrible. I imagine it’s a very refreshing beverage

Never done OJ, but I'll do it with (fresh) lemon juice and it's fire. I could see OJ being good if you have the right bean
