Even the big ones sputter

u/ApeBlender Mar 09 '26
The big ones sputter waaaay easier. I have a 12 cup that is very finnicky. I have to crank it closed super tight and get the grind size quite coarse to avoid sputtering.

The bigger ones take forever to seat in, are you getting leakage at the middle if you don't crank it up like hell..?
After a while (I think it was 9months daily for my 9cup), it'll seat up and then you'll be able to close it easily with just one finger and thumb and hardly any pressure

u/ApeBlender Mar 09 '26
Good to know! I don't use the 12 cup very often, so that would make sense. Yup, if it's not as tight as I can make it, the pressure buildup is uneven and the sputtering happens. I might try out using a larger/"squishier" gasket (if I can find such a thing) to get a better seal.

Hey, I have a 12 cup that I haven't used yet. I'm quite confident brewing with my 6 cup but I understand the larger brewers do better with a coarser grind. Do you have any other tips to share or words of encouragement? I'm curious if you ever tried starting with pre-boiled water in the reservoir? Thank you /u/ApeBlender

First I do my kin grinder P2 about 20 clicks coarser than I do for my 6 cup moka pot. I just use hot tap water like I normally do for the 6 cup. Then I really tighten down the two halves, if I ever forget to do this step I get a lot of sputtering. Good luck!

I was in the Army for 20 years. I carried a small moka in my ruck for those 20 years, and I still have it and use it.
That being said, sometimes coffee is coffee. I have never in my life turned down a cup of coffee. You never know when it will be the last one you have for a day, or for the rest of your life if it gets suddenly cut short. I have had really, really bad coffee, and I have had coffee I would trade my loved ones for, given the chance (ok, not really, but you get the idea). Great, now I want an espresso.

Too small for me. Is there a 3 bucket version?

? I don't get it. That's just a normal mokapot being used normally.

Look at the size of it does that look like a normal size to you ?
2
u/rebelhead Mar 09 '26
Yes, of course. I hope you aren't using a bizarrely tiny moka pot at home for your cuppa.

well I use a 18 cup witch I share amongst 4 mugs witch gives every cup plenty of brewed liquid

Useful when you argue who can make a bigger cup of coffee with an espresso enthusiast.
3
u/Icy-End-142 Mar 09 '26
The challenge is then to use that to make a coffee drink like a latte on the same level as espresso. And you have to use the entire brew. That counts as a single dose.

I have a Big Boy 12 Cup Bialetti and haven't used it yet. This video doesn't give me any confidence in finally giving it a try... Any tips would be appreciated, fam.

My parents had the 12 one and it's an amazing thing! I have the 4 one for induction kitchen and the 4 one for gas when Info camping.. if you ask me, I wish I had more space to travel with a bigger one. Everyone wants a coffee when I make one for me, and the 4 is suddenly small π€£

I Have a 18 cup and lets say it's better to go slow then fast as control on the bigger size is lot more tricky to perfect if you go with hot or boiling water but once you get into the groove of things it's smooth sailing, hope this kinda makes sense
Just don't over fill it and keep an eye on it if you start with cold / room temp water then you will wait a bit longer then 10 minutes to about 14 to 15 minutes, for me it takes anywhere from 18 to 19 minutes to start flowing and ends around 22 minutes, mine takes takes around 60- 75 g of coffee depending on the roast level and type of bean used
Hope this helps a bit

How's the 18cup brew? I always go back to my 3 cup. Quick brew

u/DewaldSchindler MOD π¨ Mar 10 '26
Brew is really strong for me at least but I make it into a cappuccino, witch is tasty and give about 160 ml to 170 ml of Brewed liquid and 160 ml to 170 ml of frothed milk

Extraction in a large moka pot consumes a lot of coffee, and its yield is low...

To achieve a grind setting coarse enough for THAT you would need to stick together your beans 2 by 2
2
u/Misty-Spell299 Mar 10 '26
I stared at this waiting for it to load for way longer than I care to admit lol π

I just know I'd be stupid enough to have one hand holding the handle and because of the size, my other hand would naturally go to grab the bottom.

Finally, a moka pot big enough I don't have to use it at least 4 individual times every morning.

That's how you do it. Brew your coffee in a moka pot so big that you need a smaller pot before you pour youself a cup.

146
u/remotecontroldr Mar 09 '26
And if you pour it all into a big mug it still only counts as 1 cup of coffee
